This is hilarious. When I was a teenager with a 50cc moped I once stopped next to a guy on a huge Honda in full leathers and everything. He saw me ogling his ride and gave me a friendly wave so I cheekily asked if he wanted to race. He chuckled and nodded. When the lights changed I set of full throttle whilst also pedalling like mad (moped owners will get why) - only to look over my shoulder and see he'd stalled in first gear. A split second later of course he flashed past me with a roar but you couldn't wipe the grin off my face for a week!
Yeha, I might be young but I've driven several veteran mopeds. My favorite was my old Honda MT5. 50cc engine and 4 gears but it did a solid 75km/h . Had a blast with it. My Yamaha DT50 isn't far behind, though. Although it has a 65cc engine and 5 gears, so its legality can be questioned. It did do 90km/h, though so I'm happy with it. Though I've never owned a legal moped, either.

A few years back whilst visiting the states, we pulled up next to a Lamborghini (we were in a cab). We really egged on the driver to rev and edge forward, we beat it off the lights for a few yards and were going absolutely mental. One of those things you probably had to be there 😂

The cracking sound most certainly is not from building boost thats the anti-lag holding the boost to some level by injecting fuel in order to maintain the spin of the turbo !
The crackling sound is from excess gas in th exhaust as timsgman suggested. It has excess gas because he is revving it. He is revving it so he can build boost and hav the engine in an rpm range and have enough boost that it would take off without having to launch it like he is trying to start a race. They are completely street legal but not very street friendly.
yeh i rememeber an unassuming estate which was turbo charged and some guys on a mazda miata were revving their engines and stuff. The estate wasn't even challenging them he just stayed put. Then the lights went green and he just floored it. The guys in the miata just started at each other in disbelief.

WRC cars costs well over 1million dollars, the super rally license and driver training to acquire the license cost over 1million, the cars are equiped with launch control systems and u must rev over certain rpms or you will stall, they are equiped with anti-lag which is used to keep the turbo spooling, to drive one of these you need sponsors to raise over 1million. i wish i could get you close to a wrc event so u can experience the facts n make a video as great as the watercooled post. thumbs up
