Back in 1981 the BBC televised an adaptation of Evelyn Waugh’s novel “Brideshead Revisited”. Geoffrey Burgon wrote the music for the TV series, and part of the music was arranged for organ solo by Eric Wetherell.
Geoffrey Burgon (1941-2010) was a British composer best known for his television and film scores. He also achieved success and a serious following with vocal, orchestral, concert and stage works.
Eric Wetherell. (b.1925) Eric Wetherell has lived and worked in Bristol for nearly 30 years and is well- known to local music-lovers and professional musicians alike.
Eric was Musical Director for HTV, Chief Conductor of the BBC Northern Ireland Orchestra, and Senior Music Producer at BBC Bristol.
He has worked with both the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden and with the Welsh National Opera.
Now concentrating mainly on composing, Eric has written orchestral suites, jazz, wind band and brass band works, choral pieces, children's songs and music for TV and films.
He has also re-scored three operas for Midland Opera, based in Birmingham. His own first full-length opera, based on the Ben Macintyre book 'A Foreign Field' was premiered at the Redgrave Theatre, Bristol in September 2010.
This was played as part of my recital at St. Michael the Archangel, Retford in October 2014
Wonderful music
… just wonderful!!
Wonderful music for the best drama ever made - even after nearly 40 years it still moves me very much and will always continue to do so.
beautiful
Loved this
Superb
Makes me want to go to Ma Mayfield's with Viscount Mulcaster.
Loved this so passionately so long ago. Thank you.
Thank you
Glorious!
Thank you
What a treat to come across this. Thank you - I am both happy and sad remembering the story, but delighted in listening to a beautiful piece of music.
Thanks
❤
I used to have this album on vinyl. Jose Serebrier, or something like that, I believe. I wish I could get a copy of that recording!! Thank you for this organ version though! :-)
Thanks Tabitha
well done big man
There is an error in the introduction. Brideshead Revisited was produced by Grenada Television for ITV, and not the BBC.
woooow
Does Castle Howard have an organ?
It would.be interesting if it does
There's a small 3 manual Harrison & Harrison in the private chapel. See www.npor.org.uk/NPORView.html?RI=D03076
@@revtonynewnham thank you. It is on my bucket list.
Where can one obtain the music?
I've had the score for many years - not sure if it's still in print. Google comes up with www.musicroom.com/product-detail/product20575/variant20575/geoffrey-burgon-brideshead-variations-for-organ-solo/
I just got it online; it's still available.
I would have liked to hear this played on a better organ.
Search "Russian National Anthem - Organ" if you want to hear a proper sounding organ.
The organ is in dire need of restoration. I think the plans are to remove the later additions (most of which no longer work anyway!) and return it to its Father Willis state. Not a bad organ, just needing a lot of costly TLC! Recitals are to raise funds towards the cost.
