1,806 WHP | Ecotec 2.2L 4-Cylinder | Nicolas Brunet

- In the early days of March 2020 one of the biggest barriers in Sport Compact drag racing went down-a four-cylinder equipped drag car entered the 5-second zone. Canadian Nicolas Brunet pushed his Pontiac GXP racecar to a best of 5.95 at 230 mph and it is powered by an Ecotech 2.2L four-cylinder engine.
The journey to the 5s wasn’t easy and Brunet has been relying on the Ecotec engine for over a decade, using it to power various door-slammer and dragster chassis configurations. The latest combination has been installed in a Pontiac GXP, an aerodynamic body that is made from carbon fiber and covers an NHRA-style Pro Stock chassis. Brunet backs the turbocharged 2.2L combination with a Liberty 7-speed transmission to keep the engine in its narrow powerband.
Recently, Brunet found himself back in the United States after COVID travel restrictions precluded the team from making the trip since their record-setting run nearly three years ago. In between their assault on drag strips up and down the east coast, they found time to get the GXP bolted to the Mainline Hub Dyno at the FuelTech USA headquarters that is in Ball Ground, Georgia. It was a glorious day as the buzzing four-cylinder powerplant spun its way to a best of 1,806 WHP. As you will see in the video, the seven forward gears make the pulls quite entertaining with speed shifts that could only be handled by the FuelTech drivetrain management system. In fact, Brunet credits his switch to the FuelTech FT600 as a big reason for his success on track and running in the 5s.
The FT600, FT550, FT550LITE, and FT450 offer a complete line-up of standard features including sequential injection and ignition, O2 Closed Loop, data acquisition, traction control, delay box, Boost Controller, Nitrous Controller, and so much more. Additionally, the FT600, FT550, and FT450 have a customizable digital display for the driver and the anti-glare TFT touchscreen offers the ability to adjust the tune without hooking up a PC computer. It gives the driver feedback in real-time and puts the data in front of him or her instead of mounting multiple gauges around the cockpit.
The GearController option in the FT600 and FT550 allow full authority over gear shifting for transmissions like the Liberty 7-speed in Brunet’s GXP. Additionally, the two ECUs are used in popular applications such as the TH400 and Powerglide and it is also compatible with the GM 4L80 Overdrive transmission. In clutchless-transmission applications, the GearController function can pull timing at the shift by simply using a strain gauge sensor mounted on the shifter.
Turbos Direct supplied Brunet with a Garrett GTX turbocharger and it requires excessive boost pressure to produce 1,806 WHP from just 2.2L of displacement. That makes data from the engine critical for engine durability and peak performance. The FT600 collects all engine sensors as well as information from the WB-O2 Nanos. Each sensor is connected via CAN and doesn’t require the use of an analog input, reserving those for other functions.
If more inputs are required, FuelTech users have the option of adding the FT Input Expander. The entry-level FT450 carries 7 input channels while the top-of-the-line FT600 offers 20 inputs. The FuelTech Input Expander changes the game, allowing up to 24 extra inputs, including 20 analog inputs and 4 VR sensors. It brings the entry-level FT450 to a total of 31 input channels-that’s more than a standard FT600 engine management! And if you own an FT600, the additions are nearly endless with 44 input channels available.
From 5,500 WHP, methanol burning twin turbocharged engines to the most powerful 4-cylinder powerplant, there is a reason you’re seeing #FuelTechEverywhere

So proud to see this Brazilian native brand thrive towards the top of the Motorsport World, congratulations Anderson, Luis and the whole crew! You guys are awesome, keep up the great work 👏🏼
Parabéns galera, vocês são fera demais, espero poder encontrar vocês aqui em Charlotte na temporada 2023, abraço pessoal, sucesso à todos! 👏🏼👏🏼

Your creation of Fuel Tech is revolutionary for piston engines, don't stop evolving your product! Epa is cracking down on us for sure, but we cant let them tell us how we can modify or tune something we outright own!
This is the most insane engine and owner made setup I have aver seen, a FOUR POT MAKING SHY OF 2K HP IS BY EVERY MEASURE INSANITY ALL AROUND, HUGE CONGRATS 🎊🎉🎈🍾 🎉🎉
its making over 2k technically the engine that is since this is wheel hp

Des gars au top, gentils et qui sont humbles en plus. Le gars du Brésil, très sympathique aussi!
Stunning! It's making the power at about half the RPM I expected - love to know the dynamics and choices behind the combo.
U ought to see the 4liter 4 cylinder motors they make. It's a billit block it handles over 5000 horsepower

ECOTEC makes 1800hp whp 10 months ago @ only 5600rpm vs LAZCANO 2JZ 1880hp @ 7400rpm 2 years ago!!!!!!! thats 2 less cylinders, less capacity less rpm and less boost than when he races. Why is everybody wasting time on expensive 2Jz and K series when the Ecotec can be had for a six pack?
Great question! Very few people seem to know what the ecotec is capable of for some weird reason.
@AmericanFreedomPatriot this blows my mind
@AmericanFreedomPatriot Is this the L61 engine and would it be unreasonable to believe it's capable of more?
I’ve been saying this for years, and remember it’s a stock cast block… lmao
Look at the torque numbers too. And don’t forget a 2jz went 5.53 or 5.54 at 263+ mph at World Cup last year. They make billet ecotechs that are made for 3000+ horsepower !
Amazing. 2.2L and 1,800 WHP? 😮😮😮
Insane numbers. It sounds and smokes like a two stroke.
I'm guessing its running on methanol, so the probably running a top end lubricant in it!!!
the microphones are set hard Left for 1 microphone and hard right for the other microphone. Please fix audio by placing them both center. nice footage, love EcoTec
Patrão convida esse cara pra levar esse carro no Brasil. Imagina ele no Velopark e no spid.
It's good that their not caught up in showing the actual numbers this car produces, use the dyno as a tuning and issue finding tool and use the mph at the track to show the cars true horsepower.....
gotta know the weight and drag coefgicient too
I love that car and the team is very good and they are excellent people, now the people of Puerto Rico made the game difficult for them in the 4 cyl with a time of 5.86, the category became good
It only took 10 years 🤪

There is also a k series in the 5s now to the quarter mile

Absolutely nasty it revs so fast
That statement is false. This isn't the only 5s 4 cylinder. There was a K24 powered Acura that just went 5.86 @ 243mph at Haltech World Cup in October and reset the 4 cylinder World Record
That's true, think bald guy may have jumped the gun unknowingly stating that this drag car is the only 4cyl 5sec Drag car... Dude SHOULDVE said:
"this is the 1st 4cyl RWD Drag Car to reach 5sec on the ¼ Mile"
And the record belongs to this car again at 5.82 et
You talk about WHP so are you somehow calculating it from HUB power? Normally hub dyno doesn't take that drag of the tyre?
hello, very nice video and how impressive the car had already seen it when he made the tour in another note that anderso made him and how good it was together with big poop from the 4 cylinders 💪 greetings oscar from Argentina 👍

No info on engine specs ?
I just know it's a turbo 2.2l ecotec out of a 2004 cobalt. I'm sure they wanna keep as much info as possible secrets so they stay at the top
There is a 4 cylinder honda in the 5s
Its awesome. But why does it smoke like it has no rings in it? That can't be helpful.
they inject oil on the exhaust valve guides directly . if you check the photos you can see the lines, oil just exits the exhaust not affecting the cyl op.
Congratulations buddy
I need to pick up one of those Canadian Fuel Tech shirts! 🇨🇦

Love the content and all of the knowledge..absolutely despise the awful background music, especially when the engines are running and testing
Question? Is it punched out to be 3.0 liter or is it still a 2.2 liter?
2.2

Maybe 2.7 litre up grade with 0.60 bore.
Which is this the LE5, LSJ, or L61 ecotec? 🥸
Wow! Wonder what I could get out of my 1.8 corolla?
There are a bunch of 400 to 600 rwhp turbos for that engine size with a steerable powerband to 7000 rpm. Rwtq is 300 at 3200 and 425 at 4500.

@@sexyfacenation hmmm, yeah that doesn't make sense. Coz alot of drag cars use short ratios like that. But I can't see them using anything longer than a 4.1..? Maybe a 3.8 but that's a pretty long ratio on a 400m drag car. They surely have custom ratios in the transmission as well so we will never know.
It's not an import though
1800HP @ 5652 RPM?????🤯😬👍🏽
Rear axle rpm.
I'm glad y'all are doing an Ecotec considering the hondas and toyotas are overrated.
By the way there might be an I4 LS engine coming out.
Id like to see an Atlas 4-6 project as well.
I never really liked Honda that much but in all honesty they ARE NOT over rated, the B series are proven and the K series is slaying almost everything and is in the run for the best racing engines ever made per unit of displacement. This Ecotec is very impressive also.
@@SVTCO the problem is that this Ecotec has to be all manufactured, unlike Hondas and Toyotas where you can find all kinds of aftermarket parts for 1000+whp

Wow, so much for 2JZ being so great when you can do this with an Ecotec LMAO 🤣 I've never understood the obsession with Japanese cars.
A jz makes that power easier and less stress on the motor which is why the bigger displacement motors run longer. Good on them for the R&D gone into this motor lots of work lots of headache all becomes worth it in the end
That really doesnt change the fact the ecotec engine is a piece of shit compared to any iconic jdm engine... If you have enough time and money you can shove enough boost in that gm junk and make it take it lol. you can get there much easier and quicker with engines like k series and 2jz
@@repingers9777I've done some research on the GM Ecotec engines and actually you'd be surprised at how strong those engines are. Back in 2002 they were able to put out 750whp+ on the stock block, sleeves and head. Those things are insanely strong but the problem lies that most people just don't know GM made these for building and not just commuter dailies. Surprisingly though, the only reason you didn't see people build them most likely was because nobody knew about what GM did with these, plus the people who ended up owning Cavaliers and Cobalts were normies and not car enthusiasts trying to see what the L61 is capable of. But yes, there's plenty of big turbo 2.2L Ecotecs out there that are pretty reliable at that.
Those horsepower numbers are nothing for a K SERIES. Easy 🤦♂️
