People laughed at her during this explanation but she made a very good point from a different point of view that most people wouldn't even think about. Elle was actually very smart and was not given enough credit.
i just realized, when elle was sayin her argument, at 0:59 vivian was showing discomfort while the whole class was laughing on elle, she knew Elle's argument gonna win the case before anyone else. She might look down on Elle, but she knew Elle was smart
It wasn't just Vivian. Warner looked uncomfortable as well. And as soon as Elle said track down all of his one night stands his mouth dropped open. He knew at that moment she won the case.
I also think that Warner’s ego\masculinity was shot down by Elle. Warner was used to her being the stereotypical dumb blonde and throughout the movie she was becoming more professional and breaking that ideology; he felt borderline threatened by her. He even told her she was never going to make it as a lawyer. When Elle won the case against Chutney; Warner came running back to her. Elle just had prove to herself that she was “Jackie” along.
She's rolling her eyes. The way I read it, she automatically went eye rolling because Elle was speaking, just because it was Elle, no matter how stupid or brilliant her reasoning was. She's bullying her through body language. And when the prof congratulates Elle, the three of them (Warner, Vivian and her friend) act surprised. They were just expecting everyone, including the prof, to ridicule her. I don't think any of them had admitted to themselves that Elle was smart. Not yet. If they are acting uncomfortable, it's because they're predending to think "Why is she even here? She's wasting Harvard's time", not "Dammit, she's smart".
The reality of bullies. Bullies know your potential but still look down on you to drown you so reach your dreams even if people try to drag you down. I love this little touch in the movie...
The best thing about this movie is that it doesn't discourage girls to be themselves, to be feminine and barbie esque and still be pretty smart. Society ususally discourages women who are too girly and even if they accept them, they think they would be dumb. Like a father or mother telling their daughter that she can't become a doctor or a lawyer because she is a girl. Telling her to find something easy. This movie eliminates all the stereotypes.
It's great how she kept her girlie character untouched by all these need-to-look-serious protocols that all students seemed to follow so to give the idea of next generation professionals; she was different and she remained so, and that was the key of her success!
She got a 179 out of 180 on her LSATs, one of the most famously difficult tests in the country, after studying for 6-8 weeks at most. Not to mention that her original score was in the 140s, so she learned and adapted her thinking and mindset so quickly that the test became a nonissue. That alone is certified genius level stuff. She was never stupid. More than that, she was always kind, attentive, adaptable, and observant. Those combined qualities are their own type of intelligence.
There are theories that suggest she's on the spectrum, which would make sense given how she's able to approach problems like this. Her disability literally makes her look at an issue and say "hang on, this doesnt make sense"
She took practise tests though, and if she got in the 140s on what was essentially a warm up, then blitzed it on the real one, that says a lot@@chocolate7677

@@Kaboomboo to be fair, in my opinion, she wasn’t trying to conform, but wanted to be good enough. Then she realized, she was more than good enough. It’s a powerful message for all viewers.
I love how while most people immediately dismiss her inputs, we can see the main characters she interacts with react differently. Vivien shifts from dismissing her to listening closely and attentively. Vivens friend and Warner roll their eyes and dismiss her further. The guy from the library and flirting scene also pays close attention. Minor detail but really interesting to watch (especially for Vivian foreshadowing her relation to Elle as compared to her then friend and Warner)
I love that the only person who didn’t laugh at Elle’s question was David (the tall guy in the bulky beige coat). His face shows that he took her (and her question) as seriously as she would take him as a lawyer. Good foreshadowing/layering for their respect of each other when they keep helping each other out during the movie.
I like to think he was showing solidarity for a fellow neurodivergent. Some interesting posts online have evaluated her character through an autistic lens... before you dismiss the notion, give them a read, you might be surprised. 😁
Even if Elle was a bit more "colorful" in her clothing choices and more outgoing than her classmates, I never understood why people had to be so hateful towards her. She was kind to everyone.
Because it was trendy to be “not like other girls” and look down on girls who were stereotypically feminine. Especially back in the 00s. They always pitted the “girl who’s not like the others” against the “stereotypical feminine girl” who was dubbed the “mean girl.” The movie Mean Girls called attention to this and expressed to girls not to allow society to pit us against each other.
If they were made today it would be chocked full of virtue signaling, in your face agenda politics and full frontal feminism. It's humor would be dried out and inoffensive as possible. I have to say, I watched this movie recently and Elle surprised me. I love how they used comedy to help break some misogynistic stereotypes such as beautiful, girly women can't be smart & successful or that they are more fit to be trophy wives. I love how they use El to show that just because women are breaking into more traditionally male dominated fields such as law, science and engineering doesn't mean they need to change themselves to conform with the stereotypical "masculine" behaviors, communication styles and manner of presentation to be successful. I see people saying "its just a comedy, don't take it so seriously". But stereotypes such as "beautiful, blonde women are dumb" are created subconsciously through the aid of media which will depict them as such, often as comedy relief. So isn't it fitting to use media to break stereotypes media created? Fight comedy with comedy and fire with fire! 🎤🔥

I literally did not notice until I saw this comment. and here I am thinking the reason this guy is so familiar is because I'm always re watching legally blonde. I really know him from TVD.
What really irks me most about Warner is that at the end, when Elle won her case, he saw this as an opportunity to maybe get recognition or something. He didn't see her as anything else but an object, basically.
My daughter was told this for a science fair by the head of special programs in Plano ISD. Made me ill. “It’s brilliant but you need to use boy colors or no one will take you seriously.”
@@sugarlee7648 yup! Sad reality. I took a speech course in college and we were told to not draw attention to our femininity while giving speeches. Because doing so will make us less believable. "Now you're thinking like a lawyer!" No! He's thinking like a man! "Without this man's sperm, the child in question … Wouldn't exist! The world would be a very empty, and sad place without me and my sperm cells. Men are well within their rights to do anything that we choose, because we are responsible for the creation of life. I came, therefore I'm coming in!" Elle, on the other hand: "if men really are responsible for everything everywhere, then why don't you take more responsibility for your actions? If a man is habitually unreliable in his actions, or else is clearly shown not to take responsibility for their day-to-day behaviours, then surely they have forfeited pretty much any and all rights that they believe themselves to have. Shouldn't the rights that you are asking for from society be earned and not just given?" And THAT is how you win your case!
I was laughed at by my entire class when I asked for best internships in my first year, later when I was offered a good one everyone in my class begged me to recommend them too...... Don't laugh unless you have some point of your own
This scene shows that Elle outsmarted Callahan as he was agreeing with Warner’s interpretation before Elle made her case. It demonstrates that Elle was smart enough to go toe-to-toe with even one of the state’s best lawyers and that she had really strong career potential.
Now that we know Professor Callahan sexually harrassed her, this scene becomes different. Like did he really think Elle's answer was great or was there agenda involved?
I think he did see her as smart and he did take her seriously enough at first to ask her to enroll in his internship, but as the plot develops you see him slowly losing what little respect he had for her as time went on. Mostly bc of the way she spoke about her Delta Nu sorority or framed the Windham case in fashion/beauty jargon. Once he dismissed her as just another blonde airhead and was stuck with her for the rest of the internship, he decided to take advantage of her.
@@annanabil73 You can see his demeanor change after Elle got Chutney to confess to being the Murderer. Like,"Damn, Elle who I dismissed as a dumb blonde is smart and won the case!"
I think at first elle was content to be a pretty girl hoping to find a husband but when she realized that she was smart she knew she could do so much better and I love that
The fact that she wasn’t just in the books all the time and experienced other things in life helped her to think outside the box. I don’t think she is less or more smart than the other students, she just has a different skill set. That’s what education system needs to work on, in value the different forms of intelligence each student brings to the table instead of trying to make us all fit in one mold.

Luckily, she decided to get serious as a potential Lawyer after she realized Warner still saw her as a joke, but man, the "Chasing Warner at Harvard Law in 2001," was weird. It would have fit in in say, 1951, and not 2001."
@@riverjordan2725 Who knows if MGM would have made it in the 50’s.
2001 wasnt 2021
things were way different
I love how even after the class wheezes at her first point, it didn't stop her from elucidating on her point further. She kept going. Like her personality. She didn't change to conform to an ideal. Rather made everyone see her way.
She tried to conform to the ideal of what her ex boyfriend wanted in a woman. That's the catalyst of the entire movie.
@@Kaboomboo to be fair, in my opinion, she wasn’t trying to conform, but wanted to be good enough. Then she realized, she was more than good enough. It’s a powerful message for all viewers.
If the movie "Clueless" hadn't been made, Legally Blonde would not exist. Nor Mean Girls, and many others.
ledepi34 Heathers
If Jane Austen hadn't written Emma , then Clueless would not exist!
The Heathers was not even remotely close this these type of movies. The Heathers was a horror film.
Mean Girls was LITERALLY a softcore version of Heathers (1989) so as much as i like clueless you’re wrong af
Nonsense. Clueless wasn’t the first with this type of female.
Agreed! The definition of food film directing-it’s all in the details.
And Emmett, you can see him in the background paying attention
That feeling when the girl you dumped, because you thought she was dumb, just outsmarted you.
never realized her entire class were all brunettes/black hair in this scene
Is there a stereotype I never heard of that blondes don't go to Harvard?
@@reikun86 lol I was just pointing it out, it just makes Elle stand out even more
@@buffycatnip Her blonde hair is a great focal point for the lecture room.
They always pitted the “girl who’s not like the others” against the “stereotypical feminine girl” who was dubbed the “mean girl.”
The movie Mean Girls called attention to this and expressed to girls not to allow society to pit us against each other.
i can't ignore the fact she has a Orange Mac and everyone else has this Professional looking laptops Hahaha, she's iconic
It's pink
I love how her dog is in her purse
Elle never tried to blend with the crowd. She was always herself throughout her journey even though other students judged her.
I wish they would make more movies like this :)
deeavv me too!!
More movies with smart blonde characters? Hell yeah!
Me too
If they were made today it would be chocked full of virtue signaling, in your face agenda politics and full frontal feminism. It's humor would be dried out and inoffensive as possible. The past was the only place a movie like this could exist because they were not afraid of being 'offensive' or put social politics ahead of making a good movie.
Stingra87 This movie was entirely about feminism and social politics...
I LOVE how Elle basically gave Warner (and everyone who laughed at her) the middle finger and told them to "FU" in a classy smart way.
''It's pink."'
"'Oh and it's scented. I think it gives it something a little extra, don'tcha think?'' 😂
I remember watching this the first time thinking, 'Mannnn, I wish I had that much confidence.'' lol
Now I know what's keeping me from getting a job .... Need to keep my resume scented😂😂😂😍
what an iconic role Reese😊💖💖
Noora Nazzal
I think her bikini video helped, too.
I heard several people actually sent in videos when they applied to law school (after this movie). Didn't work, but kuddos for the effort.
Reese is so beautiful and her daughter looks just like her!
Make sure it's pink too!
Love how Elle outsmarted Warner and to see his and Vivian's look on their faces was great.
Did anyone else smile with her when she won the case?
"I believe you just won your case." GO ELLE!
I like how he smelled the paper.😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I have to say, I watched this movie recently and Elle surprised me. I was expecting her to be this blonde princess floating on a cloud of sugar-coated bubbles, but she was more than just a beautiful face. She was strong, intelligent and she wasn't afraid to use her voice for good....even when the boyfriend opposed her.
I love how Elle shows you can be intelligent, driven, and good at what you do while still having a personality and not dimming your light to fit the status quo. 🥰
Whoever carries their resumes with them in class :) Love the movie though
I am assuming it's important to have in law school
nanusani you gotta be prepared :)
nanusani...in college you should, mainly your last year. As for Law School, it's pretty much a must.
@@ps6474 not today, everyone has their resume in their linkedin
@@yudisaputra3273, well yes, some do. But one still needs to have a visual resume on paper or as a file on their computer. All jobs I've, family or friends have had, required a paper copy/printed resume.
0:54 Elle's confusion when everyone giggles . To be fair it was a legitimate question.
I love the few seconds after this scene where Emmett comes over and Callahan shows him her CV and just goes "do you think she just woke up one morning and thought "I think I'll go to Law School today?" 😂
I love how Elle is so positive and kind
(After Callahan hands Emmett the resume) que Emmett: "Guess she got a chip on her shoulder Maybe some wise man told her With the chance we've been given We gotta be driven as hell. She was something to see there I was happy I could be there First big test and she aced it She's so close she can taste it She got a chip on her shoulder Guess you never can te-e-ell With little miss Woods comma Elle!!!!"🎵
Purp13luver OMG LEGALLY BLONDE THE MUSICAL YEEESSS 😭😭💕
Purp13luver the Musical :)
Purp13luver IM-
Love that song
Hell YESSS!!!🙌🙌🙌🙌
The fact that the professor just saw her as an object the entire time hurts
I believe all girls have “inner Elle” they just need to let her out ❤️
I love how the character chooses to be herself everywhere she goes.. I love Reese Witherspoon's acting skills
this scene will always be my favorite. i adore how she comes from a different angle and leaves everyone completely flabbergasted. elle is such a queen.
IT'S ALARIC❤
OMG HOW THE HECK DID I NOT NOTICE!?
I can't breathe I feel like I'm gonna cry 😭 Oh god, I love him so much!
I literally did not notice until I saw this comment. and here I am thinking the reason this guy is so familiar is because I'm always re watching legally blonde. I really know him from TVD.
kayla yeahh
kayla OMG he's so young that's awesome
her face when she was acknowledged by the professor it's so wholesome, im a huge fan of how natural it looks
It’s a shame the professor turned out to be a creep. 🤢
Just noticed how Bruiser was with her in class, would be nice if in Harvard you could really do that
Such a good dog. Doesn't make a peep during her classes.
Service animals or emotional support animals are allowed in schools if you have documents for them.
@@annanabil73 yeah, but Bruiser didn't fit in that category
"Dumb blonde", no,shes quirky as fuck but shes intelligent as heck.
Dumb blondes are so old fashioned
I loved this scene, she thought outside the box and wasn't afraid to seem 'dumb' at first. 💕
What really irks me most about Warner is that at the end, when Elle won her case, he saw this as an opportunity to maybe get recognition or something. He didn't see her as anything else but an object, basically.
I love that Emmett and that David guy were always in her corner, rooting for her
Women need to adopt masculine traits to excel in male-dominated fields or they are not taken seriously. Love this. Be yourself, girls!
So for example if you can wear your hair up do that and if you can’t don’t fidget with your hair. Talk in a lower tone ect
take note ladies. we are gonna have to use this.
The students who were sitting in class not saying anything but giggle at Elle's question are the future public defenders.
I'm here for Emmet slowly realising he is falling for Elle, and I love that we see it when she's showing off how smart she is. Meaning that unlike Warner, he fell in love with Elle, not just a pretty girl.
This is such an uplifting and inspiring movie
I’m really happy Mr. Andrews survived the Titanic and made it to America
I like how everyone laughs at Elle yet she is the one who impressed the professor
I really love her confident, her character, she's amazing
Gotta love how the professor's approval of Elle's point shut the whole class up so effortlessly 😁
I just noticed that Elle brought Bruiser to class xD
I love how the way he looks at her and says “it’s pink” gets me everytime lol
i love how her resume is pink and scented. hahaha!
I love how unapologetic she is about who is she is..just take her as she is..she is smart n beautiful
1:07 this is probably where she REALLY got Emmett's attention. Cause i think even he was shocked at her reasoning for the case but he was open and not judging her from the start^~^
"Now you're thinking like a lawyer!"
No! He's thinking like a man! "Without this man's sperm, the child in question … Wouldn't exist! The world would be a very empty, and sad place without me and my sperm cells. Men are well within their rights to do anything that we choose, because we are responsible for the creation of life. I came, therefore I'm coming in!"
Elle, on the other hand: "if men really are responsible for everything everywhere, then why don't you take more responsibility for your actions? If a man is habitually unreliable in his actions, or else is clearly shown not to take responsibility for their day-to-day behaviours, then surely they have forfeited pretty much any and all rights that they believe themselves to have. Shouldn't the rights that you are asking for from society be earned and not just given?"
And THAT is how you win your case!
I was laughed at by my entire class when I asked for best internships in my first year, later when I was offered a good one everyone in my class begged me to recommend them too...... Don't laugh unless you have some point of your own
Sounds like you're sensitive to being laughed at.
@@EmptyMan000 I think she/he was making a general point with her last sentence, not addressing directly to the readers.
We need more of that kind of Elle nice smarts in this world, it's not ditsy, it's refreshing..
"Do think she just got up one morning and said I think I'll go to law school"
😂😂😂 That's exactly how it happened!
Reese witherspoon is so very inspiring and intelligent
They don't/won't/can't make movies like this anymore 😢
Once he dismissed her as just another blonde airhead and was stuck with her for the rest of the internship, he decided to take advantage of her.
h
What do you think. OFCOURSE there was an agenda involved.
@@annanabil73 You can see his demeanor change after Elle got Chutney to confess to being the Murderer. Like,"Damn, Elle who I dismissed as a dumb blonde is smart and won the case!"
She has great emotional and interpersonal intelligence, intelligence always overlooked. She understands people and their motivations.
I think at first elle was content to be a pretty girl hoping to find a husband but when she realized that she was smart she knew she could do so much better and I love that
Elle is intelligent, smart, beautiful, kind and humble. I don't know why any guy in his right mind would dump her.
I’m glad that the professor didn’t laugh at her during her explanation and took the time to listen
I know it's a movie but I'm gonna make her a role model. Not only she's smart but she was so kind to everyone she met
Her point makes so much sense now that the stupid court are denying women our rights
I love her argument here!!
To Emmet: Do you think she just woke up one day and thought "I think ill go to law school"
"Reckless abandoment".
Hilarious!
I love how she's unapologetically herself.
I really liked Callahan but when he hit on Elle - Boom - everything nice was away.
how can you not love her
