FILM DESCRIPTION:
Reese Witherspoon stars in this romantic comedy, the feature film debut of award-winning Australian director Robert Luketic. As a ravishing Miss Hawaiian Tropic, sorority president, and calendar girl, Elle Woods (Witherspoon) is a big hit on the campus of her sun-drenched Los Angeles college. She's also got the perfect boyfriend in Warner Huntington III (Matthew Davis), a wealthy East Coast blue blood. Fearing that his snooty friends and family will never accept the bubble-headed Elle, however, Warner dumps her before heading off to graduate law school at Harvard University. Determined to win back her man, Elle enrolls in the same imposing institution, quickly becoming an object of scorn and ridicule, especially to Warner's old prep school flame (Selma Blair). Despite her penchant for malls, makeup, and tanning, Elle is no dummy and is soon showing elite Ivy League snobs a thing or two about class, self-confidence, and courtroom victory.

I love how you can actually see her body language change as soon as she catches the contradiction. She suddenly straightens and you can see the confidence.
Yeah after she said she got a perm, it becomes a child’s play for Elle, and she has a some fun with it playing a little bit of cat and mouse before going in for the kill so to speak
My fav part of this scene!
@@gymnastguy328 Let’s hope all her future murder trials involve haircare.

Chutney is going to be facing a TON of serious charges( 1st degree murder, attempted 1st degree murder, purjury, conspiracy to commit purjury ect) she should hire Callahan considering he isn’t disbarred after word gets out about him sexually harassing Elle.
The actress playing Chutney turns in such a great performance in this scene - you can actually see tears in her eyes when she yells "I didn't mean to shoot him!"
The magnificent Linda Cardellini. Too good for the comedic tone of the movie, actually.

If I learned anything from her performance in Dead to Me, is that she’s amazing at crying.
@P M Yes it is lol
I love how Elle's friends, as ditsy as they are, still showed up to support their friend despite not knowing what's going on
Vote for Elle!!

“Oh my god how cute, there’s like a judge and everything!”
That's real friendship
Its a movie man
i love the creative choice to not have luke wilson’s character say “oh my god” like everyone else. it expresses that he’s not surprised by her win, because he always knew she had it in her. instead he’s just speechless, shaking his head, blown away by her.
He saw it in her LOOOOOONG before she or anyone else did.
SAME I THOUGHT I WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO NOTICED
he and brooke were the only one believing in Elle while everyone else turned their backs on her, he 101% deserves her ❤️
The judge’s “Oh my God” was the best!
thats so smart omf
I absolutely love, *love* Elle's confusion at Chutney saying that she took a bath after her perm, because while the majority of the court laughs at her confusion and pretty much in their mind cement her as a "dumb blond", her confusion 100% comes from a utterly logical place because its Elle immediately noticing that Chutney's whole story *does not make any sense* whatsoever. Her confusion is the confusion of a very intelligent woman noticing the slip of the tongue of someone who knows very little of what they are talking about and its in that instant that game is over, and Elle has won.
I knew it was over when she made that face. It’s the same face she made in Calihan’s class before she schooled Warner on the sperm donor case.
It's doubly impressive that she basically improvised this entire line of questioning off the back of that one innocuous detail. It's practically a golden rule of criminal law that you never ask a witness a question to which you don't already know the answer, but Elle had to pick up this string on the fly and masterfully followed it to its conclusion.
I feel like the comment about hair care to the press afterwords was a little too forced and silly though. Writing could’ve been tighter there.
@@Luka1180 It was to the jury, not the press. And I think it's there to reflect both Elle's inexperience in the court room and the perception of her as a "dumb blonde."
@@animeotaku307 no they mean after the case when they’re walking down the stairs and she’s literally talking to the press about the case
Elle's friends are actually amazing. The story made them seem as the dumb superficial people at first but they are as supportive as a best friend could get. Helping Elle to achieve her goal even though it's so far from their world.
They just don’t make movies like this anymore
very sweet!
The thing is, there’s no correlation between intelligence and depth, to friendship loyalty. You can have friends who aren’t as smart, and maybe fairly shallow in how they live but that doesn’t automatically make them bad friends, not even to people of depth and high intelligence. They’re just into maybe more transient and sensory things, that’s all. The key is whether they can have a vague idea and appreciation of intelligence and depth, despite not having it themselves.
And this is true the other way too.
@@nurainiarsad7395 yea idk why people judge others for what they like as opposed to their hearts! just bc someone likes girly things doesnt mean theyre bullies! they can be caring ppl. the whole "not like other girls" trope is basically saying it's fine to bully someone who likes typically "girly" things which is despicable. and many girly girls are intelligent; there are many kinds of intelligence.
@@nurainiarsad7395 well they did help Elle and support her. which is what friends should do sadly many don't do this
What I love about this scene is that everyone doubted Elle, even she did. You can tell with her saying ‘OMG,’ along with the judge and with the accused. Everyone except Emmett, he knew. He truly believed in her, even when she didn’t believe in herself. I always loved that little detail.
The accused one did believe in her
She said OMG because there was so much going o

Reese Witherspoon should have gotten an Oscar nomination for her role here. It used to be common for actors and actresses to get nominated for a comedic role, and win. This role is downright memorable, it's been 20 years and people still talk about Reese and Legally Blonde.
She won an MTV Movie Award for Best Comedic Performance against Eddie Murphy.
She would have made an inspired nominee that year, but given that she was also competing against Nicole Kidman in "Moulin Rouge!" (even though her performance in "The Others" is superior) and Renée Zellweger in "Bridget Jones's Diary" for visibility among comedy/musical contenders, Witherspoon sadly didn't have a chance.
* though Judi Dench's nomination for "Iris", excellent performance as it is, could have been easily replaced with a nomination for Witherspoon or Naomi Watts in "Mulholland Dr.".
Unfortunately, comedic roles are not taken seriously by the academy.
I was still in highschool when this came out. Im from the province so us folks have no clue whats in or whats hot. We went to the city and I saw a poster by the bus stop of a girl wearing pink, holding a dog. It was her movie. :)
She was awesome in the film!!
I love Legally Blonde because it shows that a woman can be in touch with her feminine side and also be successful in her career.
TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU!
This movie kills the "I'm not like the other girls" bullshit and I'm here for it.
Like sure nothing bad with tomboy protagonists, but having the idea that a woman must choose between liking pink and being smart is just trying to say that intelligence is something masculine and women must forget their feminity in order to get it.

It’s just satisfying to watch how Chutney looks so bored in the beginning then she starts freaking out near the end lol
I remember a Legally Blonde Fan pointing out that Chutney doesn't look all that upset that her Father is dead and only showed real emotion when Elle really got tough on her.
Well she is played by an amazing Linda cardellini
@@jesusmysaviourable1 I like her act in The Green Book
And how astounded and worried the APA looks.
I also like how Linda Cardellini is trying not to laugh after the bone structure comment!
One of the best things about this is that, for the longest time, Chutney's story was taken as true because none of the officials knew about the ins and outs of hair care and didn't see the contradiction in it. Elle, who is knowledgeable about fashion and hair down to the scientific principles surrounding them, was the first one to catch on to the inconsistency and completely unwound Chutney's entire fake alibi. A quality that others brushed off as part of being a 'dumb blonde' is a strength for Elle.
Yes, except that this one particular area of knowledge is going to win her zero court cases in the future, and it was only dumb luck that her *knowledge* overlapped with a witness' lie. If the perm hadn't come up, Elle would've been lost. Sunk like the Titanic.
@@heddalee True enough. But I think the scene was meant to show that a woman can be in touch with her feminine side and also be successful in her career.
@@silentwalker434 Sure. That's the point of the movie. And it's what this scene is *meant* to show us. But what it really shows us is that femininity is rooted in the trivial, and it's only by extreme coincidence that "the real world" is ever interested in the minutiae of being a woman.
@@heddalee that’s a good point
it’s like they almost imply that “femininity is rooted in the trivial”.
However, let’s think of this in another perspective. If we are gonna talk about femininity as portrayed in the film, let’s zoom in on the specific example they give, because femininity has many layers and forms.
I don’t think that the film is talking about ALL femininity (and implying it’s ENTIRE nature is trivial)
More like THIS specific type of femininity (“dumb blonde” type, sorry for lack of better term) is NOT useless and has its value and merits
👍👍👍🙌🙌🙌.

I was so glad to see Elle finally proving everyone how smart she is! She is such a badass
*(I don't think blondes are dumb)* I'm not even blonde and people call me dumb just because I'm autistic, or that I didn't learn WHAT they learned WHEN they learned it. It sickens me the way people can act so prejudice.
Ok
She's always been smart. But she was smart about fashion, as proven by her tearing a shop attendant part for trying to sell her last year's dress by asking a complex question about silk and stitching.
It was really pure luck though and basically just her knowledge on fashion
i agree with elle on perms i had a few never again as it hurt my scalp 😣
Prosecution's face gets me everytime! She couldn't even yell objection because she was too in shock. Her star witness had a huge flaw in her alibi and didn't realize because she didn't know HAIR CARE. I can only imagine what was going through her head.
I love how as soon as Elle said “Isn’t it the cardinal rule of Perm maintenance that you are forbidden from wetting your hair for at least 24 hours at the risk of deactivating the ammonium thyglocolate” her facial expression said that she just lost the case. And then her jaw continued to drop because her loss was just cemented.

She probably didn't know that about perms. You can see her hair is straight so most likely she wouldn't have thought of that being the downfall of the case. Sometimes you have to look at cases from another point of view. I'm guessing that's the lesson here lol

Rightfully smug but she knows that she is going to win.
She didn't believe in herself at first during this clip. She became confident rather quickly. This movie is actually a inspirational movie.
Swinging her arms and snapping when she was getting ready to work her magic was a nice touch.
It’s like winding up for a pitch
knowledge is power, and at the beginning of the scene she’d simply forgotten how well-equipped she is ✨ when she remembered her power she went OFFFFFFF
Actually I think Elle was playing dumb on purpose because in the beginning of the movie when the lady tried to rip her off for the dress she acted the same way
I also think her confusion wasn't real.
Wow,you are so beautiful. I appreciate you.
There's something so shocking about the way she says "I didn't mean to shoot him! I thought it was YOU walking through the door!"
Almost Oscar worthy performance. The editor must have struggled to prevent this moment from stealing Elle's Spotlight. You can tell the sequence is kind of choppy and we don't get to see her again.

I love this movie, because it shows all young women out there that being feminine and liking feminine things doesn’t mean you can’t also be smart. When she says, “any Cosmo girl would’ve known!” it’s like a direct nod to those girls saying “hey, believe in yourself! You can do anything!”
Also emphasises that this knowledge isn’t as useless as people initially assume it to be. This one instance of knowing hair care leads to an entire case falling apart bc the witness they’re relying on has a giant flaw in her alibi. It’s excellently done.

Thing is El Woods knows about fashions, it seemed kind of ackward that a fashion degree would be suitable for a law degree but for this case it truly helped to find out what really happened, nobody really saw that coming El Woods knowing about fashion and beauty care maintenance, see to be a lawyer it's important knowing a little bit of everything and/or finding an expert on whatever it is they are fighting in court.

The look of satisfaction and the new found confidence when Elle heard perm is priceless. She was like "jackpot, I got ya!"

I love this scene. Not only did Elle catch Chutney in a lie and got her to confess to the crime, but admit that she had planned to kill Brooke.

😁 It wasn't only that she got Chutney to confess to the murder, it was the crafty way, with her cross
examination using the perm story to obtain the confession, that was so smart and fast thinking too. I just about die of laughter, everytime I watch this film scene.
The best part of this scene (and the movie as a whole) is that Elle didn't win the case using her law knowledge. She won with her "girly" skills. Had anyone else handled the case, Brooke would have been arrested. I love this scene because it doesn't say stuff like fashion and hair care are dumb and stupid. It also shows Elle's smarts and is a really cool scene overall.
I think it ties in nicely that, while fashion marketing might be seen as a frivolous subject, Elle did extremely well at it (and it's a multi billion dollar industry where marketing is very serious business) and she got a near perfect LSAT score. Elle never seemed to look down on anyone else for their esoteric knowledge and interests, so the contrast when other characters did was more remarkable
I love watching everyone’s facial expressions while Elle is going to town. They’re suddenly face to face with their own prejudices. Brooke and Emmett are satisfied because they always believed in her. And Elle’s friends were the first to realize what she had just found out. 😛

I've always admired Lina Cardellini's acting in this scene. It's one thing to cry, as in spill tears, when you're acting. It's believable enough. But to be able to water your eyes and flush your face like that. Not overly forceful but as if she were truly enraged and filled with anguish but trying not to cry. To me that's impressive.
That's Linda Cardellini? I totally did not recognize her! She looked completely different when she was on ER
One thing I was curious about: Why would Chutney have admitted that she had her shower AFTER her perm? Then I realized, she didn't say "I had a perm then got home and took a shower." She had said she was in the shower BEFORE stating what she had done that day. So even though she lied about the shower thing, she didn't think to lie about what she had done earlier that day, which is where she tripped up. Even if she had put 2 and 2 together later and realized that her own story wasn't plausible, she probably wasn't banking on Elle knowing the one thing that could unravel her whole story

@@ZhangtheGreat I was hoping she and cory would become an item because at the time Topanga was being extraordinarily shrill and annoying. Topanga came around eventually but that night she spent with Cory-I have had a couple of those extraordinary situations where you meet and spend the night, and only one night, with a truly amazing person.
2:20 emmett is the only one who doesn't really look shocked he is just like I knew she could do it
It’s true what they say “All knowledge is good knowledge”
I love how Elle exposed a girl because she knows exactly how perms work.
This is one of the best scenes in the film. Loved how Elle stayed calm, confident and she just let her inner power come out.
I'm not going to lie, the 1st time I saw this I was embarrassed for her when the judge called her out. I was like, "come on Elle, say something else!!!" Then at the end of it, I was gasping just like the audience were, and I said OMG just like them were too. This ending is the best and still is the movie that surprise me the most after all these years
When you realise the actress playing Chutney Windham is the same actress that played Velma Dinkley in the Scooby-Doo movies and Hawkeye's wife in the MCU.
.........I didn't know that
and from Freaks & Geeks ;-)
She also played a nurse manager vwho dated a doctor in ER.
O.
She was also Wendy in Gravity Falls
I love everyone (besides her friends) laugh at her but Emmet leans forward and soaks in every word. He knows her worth just as much as she does
Well that escalated elegantly...TEAM ELLE! On a side note, is it wrong that I kept expecting the judge to say "Thats the power of Pine Sol, baby"
Haha SAME
Cameron Williams DEAD😂😂😂
Cameron Williams No, not at all. Not at all!! You're a daytime soap watcher too.
Cameron Williams more like ELLEgantly!
The Judge is not played by Diane Amos(Pine Sol lady) :) Nor is she played by the actress who coincidentally played a judge in Martin when he went to court to contest his parking ticket and lost his case. ;)
Elle had the combination of Beauty and Brains. It could be assumed that she was very smart and maybe had an IQ near 200(no one knows). However, Elle didn't show how smart she was and was perceived to be underachieving because of society's low opinion of her. She definitely proved her worth when she caught Chutney in her lie.
Definitely. People underestimate how smart Elle is. At the beginning when she's buying a dress for her date with Warner, she comments on the fabric/stitching of a dress to the saleswoman who tries to deceive her for the price. To know all that detail and depth about textiles and materials takes a lot of time and intelligence as its really difficult to remember it all and then applying it. Elle just says it so casually like its nothing.
She also had a 4.0 GPA and got an LSAT score of 179.
If I'm correct, the highest score you can get in the LSAT is 180.
She missed one point.
ladyfire44 Elle was smart she just didnt show it to other people. It made people think shes a dumb pampered princess living off her father's money
No. She got an LSAT score of 175.
Yasmin P Actually, I think she got a 179 on the LSAT test.
I LOVE the looks on Brook and Emmet’s faces while Elle is grilling Chutney. It’s like they’re silently saying, “Sic em Elle!”
You have a fantastic body figure.i appreciate you.
I love how one of Elle's friends raises her hand to answer to question
and the fact she took her chewing gum out haha
Chutney: I got a perm then went home and took a shower
Elle: im about to ruin this man's whole career
Reese Witherspoon deserves a Best Acting Award on this movie. She was so effective. Actually all the actors are good, even the people with short scenes like the angry daughter, the pool boy, prosecutor, mother, judge. This movie is perfection.
I don't care if anyone thinks it's a feminist movie or not, but as a I like this movie a lot since I was a kid. She proved that it doesn't matter how people judge you based on your look, if you decide to work on yourself harder, eventually you will have chance to succeed. Had I listened to any asshole teacher back in middle and high school and believed I was a terrible kid, I wouldn't have made it this far to grad school. I am still fighting against people's misjudgments and professors' opinions about how I am not fit for everything I want, I don't care, if I want something, I go get it it doesn't matter how tough it's going to be.
Totally agree with this comment. I'm a big girl and like girls as elle i been juged all my life for my look and body form. Well, is not what you look like what get you to your goals its your determination.
I mean, if you don't want to see it in a political way (which, I also am not a fan of) you can always look at this movie simply as just an "underdog" story. The awkward but spunky rookie sets out to prove herself to a room full of people who just want to watch her fail. It ALWAYS feels good to see this kind of story.
꧁Spice Princess Art꧂ Yes! I like underdog stories too.
I agree!!!! I also like how the movie showed that there's nothing wrong with embracing femininity. Basically, be who you are and work hard to achieve what you want in life!!!
@@SpicePrincess1890 everything is political
My favorite line of the entire movie is "because she's brilliant of course!"
My step dad always told me “learn everything. Every small thing. Even if it seems dumb it might help or save your life” totally freaking true
there is a lot of truth in that. Even if it’s something so minute, one unusual slip up from someone is always odd
The Cosmo girl spotted the lie when Chutney mentioned the perm, but the lawyer knew the questions to ask to further condemn her. I love it!
I love this movie!! I just love the look of Brooke's face when Chutney lost her composure!
Love the way her mannerisms change - total confidence in what she's doing in the courtroom from 0:32 and on
Haha, that one guy in the very back on the left at 2:07 is like, "WOOOO, THIS CASE JUST GOT AWESOME!!!"
dlweiss Haha I love his cheeky smile
dlweiss he's like man im glad i got here early
HAHAHAAAAAAAAAAAAHAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
dlweiss omg she sounds exactly like Selena Gomez in wowp 😲😲
dlweiss He looks like he's blitzed out of his mind.
One of the things this movie made me realize is that even when you’ve finished a degree in something it’s never really too late to find something you’re passionate about. Sometimes it’s also the unexpected things in life that lead us to where we’re supposed to be
I love this move. You can be a cosmo girl or fashionsta, still have this amount of intellect to solve such a case with a small detail of perm.
Honestly, this has got to be some of the most badass writing in the history of film.
I love watching this scene.
I love how in this scene, Elle finally comes into her own as a lawyer. And she does it by doing it HER way - pink jacket and heels and all. That's who she is, and that's how she makes the best lawyer.
I love that throughout the movie, she stayed true to herself
The second Chutney mention PERM, she sealed her own fate. Elle went for the kill.
This is literally the most powerful scene ever and I’ve watched it way too many times
Shrishti S
You can never watch this movie, too many times, specially the one where Elle wins the case.
1:16 fucking cracks me up every time. Throwing her hand up to answer the question bahahaha.
foccha HEHEHEHE LMAO!!!😂😂😂😂
1:31 She did the math.
She was just smiling cause she knew right then and there that she’d won the case. Love it.
I love how slow Chutney was to realize the hole in her story.
I love how from the first time Brooke met Elle, she just knew Elle can be reliable. She even dressed up and all smug for the court.
I love how everyone in court was totes shocked when Chutney confessed - everyone except Emmett!!!! 🧡🧡🧡🧡 He was so proud of Elle 🥰🤩😎
Yeah, that had me in stitches, but that look of love and pride on Emmets face, was 100%
Justified. 😃
0:43 -> Elle's thoughts on her face: Yeah, yeah, but you are going down, b_tch...
Andrea Bradics IK I LOVE IT!!😂😂😂
After 20 years this moment is still just as satisfying and one of the best movie moments!
"ammonium thioglycolate"
Moral of the story: Don't tell the lawyer that you got a perm if she's badass, feminine, and awesome.
September 2023 and still watching this classic movie. Who else wants to join? Hello from Japan 🗾🇯🇵 "OMG" lol😛
I love how elle's friends are so supportive 😸😹
