Joust was one of my favorite old arcade games. I was super excited when I got a copy of it on floppy disk for my old Mac in the 90s. Also loved the discussion of Troika and Fighting Fantasy!
A favourite of mine too. Also I was very competitive against my siblings for the High score in Joust. 😊 Fighting Fantasy my Dad introduced to me as a way to help keep my interest in reading as a kid. 😊 Good memories. ❤😊
@@TheDungeonDive My first character just died, pushed his luck too far in an abandoned castle on a cloud island - while inside, he got locked in, and while figuring out the passcode to the door (by clicking the numbers randomly) he failed on the last number and attracted the attention of... himself! He barely survived the fight with his doppelganger, was able to get the door open and flee to the exit, but then died one room from safety by an enemy that surprised him and thumped him on the back of his head. This is amazing! Can't wait to do another run.
Playing my first game as we speak, filled with punny names and fun magic items. Great fun. Thanks for bringing this game to my attention, it's a great find.
Awesome review, I had heard of this game but had not checked it out. As a huge fan of both Troika and the Dungeon Dive, it was heartwarming to hear you talk about Troika and its lineage a bit. I have run one of Daniel Sell's modules for Troika solo before, his enormous dungeon crawl "Slate & Chalcedony", and it was quite magical. I didn't need to use an oracle, the Mien system plus the implications of the character backgrounds made the adventure write itself. Really prepared me to deftly run the adventure for my friends too.
What a great little game! Thanks for covering it. I'll be subscribing to see what else you cover. This game reminded me a lot of the classic polybagged micro games/pocket games from the late 70s and early 80s. The Hex grid, the layout, the art, the tables. All it needed was a sheet of die-cut counters and some tiny dice and it would be a perfect micro game.
Troika is basically fighting fantasy no wonder the author of this game based his solo game on it. Fits very well. Also forgot to mention but the game is like the rpg oriented take on the concept of 5 something games (like 5 persacs from home)
My curiosity about what a solo RPG was led me to your channel. I must have watched half a dozen videos trying to wrap my head around... I guess the source of enjoyment? I didn't quite "get" it. RPGs are things you share experiences with? Or enjoy a good story? This finally made it click. This appears to be like a choose your Own adventure book with numbers and stats. I finally get it. I'm excited. I'm really contemplating buying this now. This sounds so cool.
Right on! There’s so much out there to explore and experience. Personally I don’t like playing games with other people because they may not be vibing with the mood I want, so other people pull me out of game. Also, I don’t like having to rely on scheduling. With solo games I can play when want, how I want. Gaming for me is almost an entirely solo hobby, and that goes for video games as well, as I don’t like multi player video games. :)
@@TheDungeonDive I can understand that. I fell out of video games about the same time multiplayer games started to take off. Thank you for sharing your passion and hobbies with us!
You could scan the PC sheet as a JPEG and use Paint to add-in the Ostrich data lines🥰 I do that a lot with character sheets to remove stuff I dont use or add-in things that help in play🥰🥰 Love Dungeon Dive - Stellar show - Ty ty🥰😇
Arion games is continuing to publish the Advanced Fighting Fantasy books to this day. It's not that difficult to find. They even have recent releases, like the AFF Adventure Creator which includes their own Solo system.
@@jbdxiii I noticed them on Drivethrurpg recently as I'm wanting to get the complete set of orginal (and newer) Fighting Fantasy Books. I already have Port Blacksand and Titan on my bookshelf. I had the chance to see Allansia(?) at a charity event but it was back on the days of cash only and with no Cash Machines near by I missed out on getting it. I had already spent all my cash money on the event before finding the books stall. It was being sold for £2.00 as well. 😱😭😭😭

I just bought the Acade1up version of Joust a few months ago. I feel like I should wear my roller-skates playing it though. lol I must have the solo RPG version n ow.
I was bad at the arcade game, but the World of Warcraft 3d version I was much better at. (Easier to control flight.) Now that I 60, pen and paper is more my style now. And once again, you convinced me to buy a new game.
Do one of Bally Midways Spy Hunter- use Top Secret from TSR era and Gurps for the 'Car Battles' Make inside illustrations akin to the black and white of Star Frontiers or Dragonlance..
Thank you for the vid, it made me pick up this game. I had a question. It says that enemies will fight to the death but there is also fleeing in jousting. If I get a rouge housecarl's bird in jousting to half do they flee and I get a 2d6 attack of opportunity and chase them down or do they stick into the fight until them and their bird are dead?
Im not good at this whole solo RPG thing so Im a bit confused on the chapter getting started it stares "roll d36" I know its not a d36 die dose it mean 3 d6 die ?? or 6 D3 dice. any clarity would be appreciated
You had me at- Joust-the Solo RPG 😮 Joust is one of my all-time favorites.

Joust is awsome. This is a awsome idea for a setting.
This looks fantastic! Definitely an insta buy. Fond memories of the old arcade game
For real? Man Joust😊 was a staple of the 80’s glory days!
Omg this was my favorite arcade as a kid. I was lucky enough to actually own one in my house. So many memories
As a kid, I was SO BAD at Joust... and I loved it SO MUCH anyway.
When i was a kid my first life in Joust was always just running the bird across the bottom at top because i thought it was funny
Joust was one of my favorite video games.
Now I have to search for an emulator.

Thanks! Glad you enjoyed the episode. Troika is such an interesting little game. I'll have to look into Slate & Chalcedony - sounds like a fun time!
So many hours spent playing this game growing up. I will have to pick this one up.

You mean besides the jousting on flying ostriches?

Playing arcade games in roller skates!
@@TheDungeonDive In Fairbanks Alaska the roller rink, arcade, and movie theater were all in one building.
Oh yeah - I had the same experience in California. :) I oddly remember roller skates and Defender.
Do you print and bind your own books? If so, do you have a video about your process?
Yes, and yes. :)

Nice! I don't have the rules memorized at all, and don't remember encountering that situation. Probably best to ask over on the Itch.io page!
I bought this after watching this but im confused about the D36. Is red die being used as a d3?
Should be. Can’t say I didn’t make mistakes throughout. :)
Im not good at this whole solo RPG thing so Im a bit confused on the chapter getting started it stares "roll d36" I know its not a d36 die dose it mean 3 d6 die ?? or 6 D3 dice. any clarity would be appreciated
A D36 is 2 D6 with the first being the tens (1-2=1, 3-4=2, 5-6=3) and the second the ones. This will produce a result of 11-66.
Is this only available PnP, or can you buy a physical copy? This looks awesome, but I'm lazy when it comes to printing and assembling.
Don’t know. I just make my own.
