    Almost done with my install. Great points and final assessment across all categories is spot on with my experience so far. The documentation and instruction is good-and perhaps better suited towards an installer or DIYer with Sprinter experience. After a few challenges installing the braces (similar to you), I ended up using Commercial grade Velcro at each major stage to ensure alignment before drilling. I’ll have a write up in a few weeks as well.

    The most obvious question to ask and I think someone else probably did already is is there anything insulating the L track from the body and if not don’t you get condensation on it when the van is humid inside and it’s cold outside. People breathing and cooking and taking showers all add humidity to the inside and presumably in the winter you’re not running the air conditioner which dehumidifies the air and you keep it locked up tight as far as windows so that moisture is trapped inside and humidity skyrockets which means the dewpoint gets higher which means it doesn’t have to be all that cold outside for condensation To occur on any metal exposed to the inside that is connected to the outside. I ripped up my jeep wrangler so I could sleep in the back comfortably and if I do it too many days in a row without leaving the windows down for a long time or running the air conditioner for a long time it literally starts raining inside from the condensation that is on the fiberglass roof. But even before that happens there is condensation on the exposed metal on the inside since it is not insulated from the outside. I am looking at sprinter vans now so I have never owned a sprinter nor any other van but it seems to me that any exposed metal is going to have condensation on it if there’s much humidity in the air inside and I know every time a person exhales they’re adding moisture to the air. What has been your experience both with the L track which I do not think is insulated from the outside and with any other exposed metal in the back of the van. I watched most of the install video that adventure wagon created for this package including how they insulated and obviously some things are insulated better than others and some areas are not insulated at all For understandable reasons. I take it that the fan system is included as part of the package whether you want it or not and perhaps the reason for that is to help reduce condensation in the winter by reducing the interior humidity as much as to provide ventilation of heat in the summer. Maybe somebody needs to come out with a fan that can measure relative humidity and the outside temperature and turn the fan on when it gets too high for the outside temperature thus exceeding the dewpoint and thus condensation. Curious the video you were watching for installation if that’s the one that was obsolete was that the one that I watched on RUclips it might be useful to your subscribers if you could let us know which one was obsolete if it is indeed still on RUclips. Oh my phone they are designed to be overly complicated and difficult to install based on their own installation video and personally I’m not crazy about the looks of it it looks like something designed by an engineer not an architect, and I’ve been both. And I have a design in my head musing materials I am extremely experienced with for a much simpler to install system that would be much more functional and versatile and easily removable and look really cool. Hopefully I’ll get a Sprinter soon and be able to perfect my ideas, maybe Patent part of it and put it on the market. You’re right there design is terrible utilitarian looking although less so for the bed. It reminds me of the floor of a passenger plane or a shuttle bus for people in wheelchairs. As for your “very mediocre carpentry skills” you’d be above average as a Carpenter in the Local 16 Stagehands union.

    Getting professional results doesn’t have to be a goal; you just have to be happy with the results. Surely you aren’t aspiring to begin a van outfitting company! If the package works, be happy. Shit happens but if you come to a solution you like, celebrate the win. Sprinters from the before urea injection period are solid beasts with reasonable costs per mile. I have a 2007. Winnebago View built on this platform. Annual maintenance can be $1k but otherwise all my problems are related to lack of knowledge about winterizing the coach

    If I am never planning to travel anywhere where it's below 40 F does my van need insulation on the sides?
    For my my build mostly I am trying to deflect the sun and heat during the day given I insisted on a Black van. I've been converting a Ram Promaster City and using magnets and thin panels that plug into gaps where it's just one sheet metal layer. Parts of the van sides that pop out or are double layer are visible and I actually like this two tone wood/metal look. On the roof I have 1/4 birch with reflectix hanging a 1/2" below the sheet metal and on top a I have a velcroed flexible solar panel floating about a 1/2 inch above the sheet metal.. On two think strips of roof sheet metal on top that are exposed to sun I am planning to wrap with a few layers of highly reflective heat resistant aluminum sheething. I also plan to run a 12v 3a 900CFM fan when the sun is directly over me, but honestly I will likely avoid being in the van 11am to 5pm if I can help it given it's small with a low roof.. that said, my configuration is different with my stuff above me and so the bed is VERY comfortable and stable. ruclips.net/video/TTFNkVSRIpk/видео.html

      A well insulated van is essential for both heat and cold. I'm totally impressed with how it's performed between a night at 6 degree F, to 90 degree summers camping.

    • @GOLDVIOLINbowofdeath
      @GOLDVIOLINbowofdeath 3 года назад

      What most people don’t know that they need to know if they want to convert a van is concerning the term dewpoint temperature. As an architectural graduate I studied these things. The dewpoint temp varies Depending on the humidity. The higher the humidity the higher the dewpoint temperature. The humidity in the van as a function of the climate Where are you are and the number of people in the van and for how long and whether you’re taking a shower and whether you’re cooking or doing anything that puts moisture into the air, and of course ventilation. Without adequate ventilation to the outside, even just having people in the van raises the humidity level more hour and each day. Every time you exhale you exhale moisture. Parking the van in the sun with the windows open even without a fan can do a lot to keep the humidity level down but in the winter when it’s raining you’re not gonna leave the windows down and there may not be any sun. Powerful exhaust fans can help as long as the humidity outside is significantly lower than the humidity inside. If not then you need a dehumidifier which is why in order to defog your windshield inside you often turn the air conditioner on even if you I have the heater on because it’s cold out. Then there’s this thing called relative humidity which is different than absolute humidity. Relative humidity is a function of temperature as well as moisture and it is why we are most uncomfortable when the temperature is high and it is humid as opposed to when it is cooler and it is The same amount of humidity. The dewpoint is also similar to relative humidity and why it’s so important is when any man all exposed on the inside of the van reaches the dewpoint condensation will occur. Condensation will first occur on the surfaces that are coldest inside the van. When condensation occurs it obviously lowers the amount of moisture in the air so even if the temperature continues to drop Significantly more some services will never get condensation even when they reach the same temperature that originally caused the condensation on the exposed metal surfaces that are always the first to drop in temperature when it gets colder. So just like your air conditioner dehumidifiers the inside exposed metal surfaces dehumidify the inside but the moisture on them will run down onto materials that are not meant to get wet and soak them and stain them. That’s why I want to know if these L track that come with the adventure Wagon is separated isolated from the van body with adequate insulator to prevent condensation on the L track. I watched most of their install video for adventure wagon and I never saw them install anything that would isolate the L track to prevent conduction. Heat and therefore cold is transferred by three methods: conduction convection and radiation. Conduction is what we’re talking about here but insulation prevents convection and radiation and I guess you could say it also prevents conduction Although much thinner materials than are used as insulation can do that. When you turn on your inverted wire rear window defogger in a car at moisture has to go somewhere so it raises the humidity in the air which raises the dewpoint temperature which means if you’re not running the air conditioner or ventilating To outside air that has a lower humidity than the inside here then you’re just transferring that condensation from your rear window to some other window or exposed metal in your car.

    Hey great video Matt! A few question for you, what year is your Sprinter and is it the 144 or 170 model? I am currently researching a camper van build and I think the RUV is the most reasonable conversion for me based on cost and usability. And will you plan to add any appliances to your conversion, i.e. sink, fridge, stove, shower etc. And if so do you think it is possible to add appliances once the panels are installed? • @mattalatta
      @mattalatta  4 года назад +1

      It all depends on how you’re going to use the van. Where we use it, we needed 4wd for winter driving. That limited us to the sprinter at the time. A long van was never a consideration- they are just bigger than we needed. The transit is a very nice van and has the HUGE advantage of less expensive parts and repairs. Anything with MB stamped on it is pricy.

    Maybe I should design some accessories to go with this adventure wagon kit to help make it worthwhile. With the materials and know how gained from almost 4 years I am using for my other soon to be released invention for the video industry I could fairly easily create a lightweight, quick releasable Multi drawer unit that you could attach/detach to any of the horizontal L track sections. The drawers could be ordered either in steel or in aluminum and the fronts and or sides covered with any wood or other flat material or left plain. Unfortunately for my current source for the drawers the aluminum version is not a stock item so The aluminum drawers can take about 4 to 5 months right now. And six of the 7” aluminum drawers on order form several months now that should arrive next month. One beauty of the system other than being light weight compared to most cabinets is you can order the drawers in various depths and you could have a lockable vented laptop drawer in it wherever you want it to be for convenient height and If you order various drawer depths you could easily change the drawer depth arrangement yourself down the road so to speak. You could also order a slide out shelf for added counter space and Mount a work service on top as well. Oh and if you attach it to the lower horizontal L track it could be made to fall short of the floor so that you can utilize that space for something else or to just make it easier to run a vacuum underneath it instead of around it. Is anyone interested in such a thing? Can you give me the dimension from the floor to the center of the lower most L track?

      @@mattalatta Whenever you insulate anything you must have a vapor barrier on the warm-in-winter side of the insulation. I don’t know if these panels and are like the panels that come with the Mercedes passenger van that I believe are made out of plastic which of course would be a vapor barrier but if anybody is using anything that does not have a vapor barrier on the warm in winter side which is the inside of the van then there could be hidden condensation accumulating inside The insulation which would mold if it’s organic or contains any organic dust. The vapor barrier prevents the moisture in the van from migrating through the wall and condensing on the inside surface of the metal body. Is my opinion if you’re using that wall insulation product without a vapor barrier with no significant breaks in it you will be getting mold and not even know it’s in there till it’s really bad. @@mattalatta Yes that’s extremely important long-term to have that vapor barrier on the warm-in-winter side of any insulated space. A Five year degree in architecture comes in handy sometimes. People don’t realize that the moisture inside the van migrate through the wall materials and condensers on the inside of the outside metal. Some of these systems may have that barrier built in them but they never seem to talk about it. I think the Mercedes passenger van panels are plastic so they are natural moisture barriers but the joints in between them are not but the passenger vans are not insulated so there’s nothing in there to absorb any condensation and then grow mold so it’s not even a big issue.

    What about insulation/condensation? The wheelarches are not isolated. Why, when You had the opportunity, spray the inside of the car with, for example, with LizardSkin Ceramic Insulation or use Armaflex (= also sound insulation) and use sheep's wool as insulation between the wallboards.🤓

    I like the approach to the AdWag kit but I'm struggling to see how a kit (frame/panels/wiring harness/bed frame) costs near the same as a complete travel trailer (which includes everything bed/toilet/kitchen/etc). If the majority of the AdWag cost is related to labor then these guys need to move their production to Mexico and cut their costs before a competitor does or they invest in automation and increase what the kit includes.

    These sped up time lapse things are rarely useful and I agree with one of the other commenters that we should just be left to speeding it up on our own with the RUclips settings. Maybe just put a prompt for people to consider opting to do that at a point when you’re going to show a long clip of just installation and then give them a graphic screen prompt where they might want to stop it at some point

    2:08 - This is incorrectly done. You should have put some BUTYL TAPE tween the fan flanges and metal roof to seal out moisture. You do not put butyl tape OVER anything. It is SANDWICHED BETWEEN items. Optional here as Dicor is sufficient. Then you drill holes or use existing drill holes. Put some Dicor lap sealant in the hole, screw in the hardware, then a dab of Dicor over the screw head. This makes it easy to remove the Dicor and unscrew it when you need to replace fan. Nothing is permanent.
    You do not use any tape of any kind because, if you use:
    1 - Duct tape - It cannot weather and will disintegrate.
    2 - Eternabond rubber roof sealing tape will not come off without ruining your roof. It is impossible to remove.
    3 - VHB or Very High Bond tape will also not off without ruining your metal roof or rubber roof.
    Before you teach others, take the time to learn the correct way or you do a disservice to other newbies. Too many people rush to teach and do harm. Make sure you know the right way to do anything technical in the trades. Its not easy, there are steps to follow, and you cannot take shortcuts.
    I found it very difficult to watch this series of fast moving slides. It made me dizzy and seasick. You need to slow down the slides A LOT. Fast moving slides is a very bad idea anytime. The brain cannot absorb images that fast, AND focus on what you are saying. When talking, slide should be still.
    Neither the project steps, nor the video were done correctly. You need training in both. For video, put yourself in viewers place and critique your video. Use common sense, you don't need film school. For project, read instructions from manufacturer and check out other videos on factory installs.

      @lass-inangeles7564 5 лет назад +1

      @@mattalatta Yes, there is. It is an endless learning curve, but fun. Vans are so much more complex than houses. You have to watch a lot of van build videos to get ideas on materials and also build designs. Cannot rush this. Slow absorption of ideas, fill your brain with material choices (insulation being one), then it starts to gel. However, the knowledge also carries over to tiny house builds and bigger house builds, or repeat van builds.

      Some of the most watched and most frequent episode posters on van conversions on RUclips are still clueless years later as to things that would be taught you in filmmaking 101 At any community college. I forget how many seconds we were told you had to leave up a sentence but it is based on the number of words and a lot longer than is instinctual. If you want people to read what word you put on the screen don’t expect them to be looking at the background video or a photo photo while they’re reading the words. the brain cannot do that. Multitasking is a hoax. If you want people to look at the background and you want them to read the words you need to remove the words either at the beginning or at the end long enough for people to take in the image and you need to leave the words up long enough at some point for them to read the words and I’m not talking about speed reading because people will be distracted by the image so their ability to read words will be slowed And especially if you essentially make them take the time to decide do I want to look at the words or do I want to look at the image. Things like this are while why film editing is a profession but that doesn’t mean anybody can’t learn it but like most things you often need to learn them from a professional. The person editing the video and adding the words already knows what the words say so they cannot judge it how long to leave them up based on their ability to read it plus they’re not taking into consideration the distraction that the image is causing because most people will be drawn to moving images over static words Because the eye is drawn to movement. that’s how we caught or killed animals to eat when we were living in caves.

      @@GOLDVIOLINbowofdeath So true. I think you learn a lot by watching good videos like Tiny House Tours or Living Big In A Tiny Home or Humble Road. However, you don't need to be a professional film maker. Just use common sense, and put yourself in the viewer's place. View your own videos and improve them. I think however, it is arrogance that prevents seeing what is wrong. Young people today are not modest but arrogant. This prevents seeing your own work in a critical light.

    I’d like to see a thermal image from inside the van taken when it’s cold outside and the heat’s on inside to see where the coldest spots are that are likely to have condensation. We have something in common in that my vehicle was destroyed when I was rear ended on the freeway and knocked off and had a double or triple roll over. I am in the market for replacement vehicle but the Local stealership deceived me and sold two sprinter vans out from under me all while getting all of my financial information. I don’t know what motivates these people but they seem to love to deceive.
    It seems to me the easier solution is to just buy a passenger van that’s already fully lined and use a system that works with that to support the bed cabinets whatever and I’ve already designed such a system. If the support system is not tied into the exterior walls it’s not going to conduct cold or heat and cause condensation. You still have to remove the liners if you wanna install insulation with my design But it’s not necessary for installing my support system And my support system can remain in the van if you decide you want to reinstall the passenger seats temporarily.

I did this without them knowing (at the time). Influencers who get discounts/paid have far more “subscribers” than my 500 or so, all of which were as a result of this video. I did this just so I could teach myself video editing and looking back on it - it’s pretty crappy. But hopefully it’s somewhat informative to folks who are thinking about installing the kit. Thanks for asking.

    You can be humble and still not leave your words, PIP photos or a video, etc. on long enough. Pun intended. These are amateur mistakes still being made years later buy some of the people you mentioned. The other amateur mistake most commonly being made is what I call the talking head or heads mistake. People don’t want to watch you talking for very long. They want you to cut to B roll Showing what it is you’re talking about which should be renamed A roll and the talking head shot should be renamed B roll. I guess that problem is inherent when the talent is the producer. Knowing when to cut back and forth between a talking head and B roll is what separates the professionals from the amateurs and some of these successful RUclips channels are still producing amateur edits when it comes to knowing when to cut from one to the other. Some don’t even bother to create the B roll to cut to. If you don’t have the B roll you better be mighty entertaining on camera Or be very good looking or both.
