30:00 There is a famous apochryphal story about the personalities of the Three Unifiers. The tale goes that the three of them are sitting together in a garden when they see a songbird that is perched quietly on a nearby tree branch. Oda Nobunaga shakes his fist and shouts that "If that bird does not sing, I will kill it!" Toyotomi Hideyoshi waves his hand and silkily responds, "If that bird does not sing, I will trick it into singing." Tokugawa Ieyasu merely shrugs, reclines, and plainly states, "If that bird does not sing now, I will wait for it to sing."
Oda's greatest strength is the same as his greatest weakness. He's very fearless in trying something unprecedented. In order to establish a new world order, he amped up the brutality in his campaign, made the guns the primary weapons for his team, burning Enryakuji temple and Ichiyama Honganji temple to destroy the power base of rebel monks which gave him a derogatory nickname of "The Demon King". Unfortunately, his radical approach and brutality made him treated the family members of his generals poorly (Tokugawa and Mitsuhide) which led to the Honnoji. However, without the groundbreaking approach from Oda, Toyotomi and Tokugawa could never have done what they did. Oda did the dirty works so that when the two successors did the same thing, they faced less resistance to their regimes.
Some corrections. A lot of Nobunaga's wars were defensive one as his enemies conspired to attack him from all sides. Also, the Demon King moniker was a tongue in cheek jab at Takeda Shingen letter to nobunaga, in which Shingen referred to himself as a Diety, and Nobunaga in his reply referred to himself as a Demon King. nobunaga was ruthless, yes but he has been unjustly reviled by historians, as well as his anime/video game renditions.

Good video. Samurai were members of the Ikko Ikki as well. And firearms (and their users protected by palisades and stronger fortifications) were a paradigm shift. If the rebellion grew it threatened food production and distribution as well as socio-economic stability. As it was, the Ikko Ikko influenced the security of several overland trade routes leading to Kyoto (though inland and coastal shipping was more important in the trade of bulky goods). Earlier, Daimyo Nagao Tamekage was defeated and killed by the Ikko Ikki at the Battle of Sendanno. Other daimyo entered into alliances with them, for example the Mori clan and Nobunaga rivals Uesugi Kenshin and Takeda Shingen. It took 11 years of seige for Nobunaga to defeat the Ikki Ikki at Ishiyama Hongan-ji.
Nobunaga didn't hate religion. He didn't tolerate corrupt monks who abused their influence, and meddled in politics. Nobunaga did more or less the same thing many rulers did when their power was challenged... He just eliminated the opposition. Phillip the Fair, king of France eliminated the Templars, Charles III of Spain expelled the Jesuits from his territories... You get the idea. It's just politics.
I feel like Nobunaga is still considered a controversial figure. I've read countless manga and seen countless anime that features a demonic Nobunaga as the main villain. Tokugawa tends to get similar treatment. I can't say I've seen many that show Toyotomi as a monster, despite Toyotomi IRL going crazy with power and trying to invade Korea (with the suspected aim of conquering China and installing himself as the Chinese Emperor)
@@nont18411 Toyotomi still comes off a bad to me, especially with how he forced Nobunaga's niece to be his concubine as well as the aforementioned invasion of Korea.
I always saw him as Japan’s own Genghis Khan what with his ruthless pragmatism and brutality. And his tendency to wipe out anyone who didn't immediately surrender or already opposed him. It's no wonder even his own closest ally who also engaged in extreme violence, decided to betray him and assassinate him.
I always been a fan of Asian culture, especially when it comes to war lords especially when it comes to Oda Nobunaga how he did things to unify, Japan was crazy but brutal, but it was necessary for my opinion I was always fascinated with foreign history and culture

Oda: Hahaha! I am the heavenly demon that will unify Japan! Proceeds to do so via typical war and conquest until one of his retainers kills him. Fortunately, that retainer is killed by another who completes Oda's ambition
That saying at the end is VERY incorrect as well as a lot of little tidbits you. It's Nobunaga pounded the rice, Hideyoshi baked the cake, and Ieyasu ate it. Nobunaga never made the cake because he never unified Japan. It wasn't even an original idea from him. Many wanted the Japans to be unified but only Nobunaga 'ingredients' won out. It was Hideyoshi that unified Japan, he made the cake, and Ieyasu reaped the long term benefits. I think you should delve deeper on history of japan more than you do now so your videos are not rife with inaccuracies. :)
By the time Oda Nobunaga died at Honoji, the Oda was the most powerful clan in Japan. They were expanding to every corner of Japan and winning the war against the Takeda and the Mori. Its correct to say that Oda Nobunaga bought all the ingredients and make the dough as without him no way Hideyoshi who was born a peasant would be able to unified Japan.
Nobunaga's captain was Yasuke the Black Samurai. They always leave that part out of the story due to Yasuke being part of the reason he won so many battles.
Conveniently? He wasn’t exactly a staple to any of the battles or wars. The only few thing known of him was he was there when Oda Nobunaga was betrayed and defeated, and he then served under Nobunaga’s son, which was also defeated the same day. Yusuke was then brought back to a Jesuit mission and nothing else is known of him after that. He is only known as the first foreigner given the title Samurai, but whether he was a good warrior or a bad warrior was not known.
