I managed to escape the bloodbath at Amazon. Most of the cuts came in Amazon Stores and PXT departments, but I work in Ads. Not feeling very comfortable about that though, since Ads is probably next up on the chopping block if things get worse. I'd say, out of all departments, AWS is probably the safest.
The reason they have to pause PERM is because it's hard to make the case to the government that you need an immigrant fulfill a specific role instead of a domestic employee when you just laid off 12,000 people.
All those people denying layoffs are the embodiment of "confidently incorrect". You shouldn't make fun of them Boyalgo, it is a rare talent to time their layoff denials precisely within 24 hours of the layoffs.
Friday was so fucking weird for me. I woke up and was told by our manager 1 person on our team was let go. But apparently they were the only person in our entire 60 person Engineering org. Our product is fairly strategic, so I feel like they just pulled a name out of a hat so they could say "all orgs" were affected rather than mentioning a specific product area.
Good thing I have a comfy government job hehe. However in the future I'd like to challenge myself like you've managed to do working at a FAANG company.
those tiktoks about ppl doing yoga honestly made me think google hired way too many people who produced zero value. I'm sure engineers will be fine at the end of the day
Very sad for the layoffs. I also want to comment on something that keeps getting reminded to me each time I see googlers interact in the wild. The stench of snobbism is so fucking strong most times I see googlers express themselves, I wonder how many of those people are actually as good as they think at swe. I am yet to find an actually good swe who is not just a one trick pony of some sort and is not humble about themselves. I know most swe are full of themselves, FAANG is bad in this sense, etc. Googlers just take the cake in any online discourse, it looks externally like a whole new level of self worshipping. Google seems to breed arrogance and ego, which I usually associate with bad devs (they are usually the ones that have a hard time learning and adapting to new concepts, which is bread and butter for dev work)
