Nice episode. It was a bit confusing. Maybe if there were close ups of what Rob was looking at, we could’ve followed along. My thinking was more like Rob. 😊 But in the end, I had Brittany’s choices. Hence, a bit confusing in the talking. Lol.

I play this game A LOT rockhounding were I am hahahahahahahahahaha minus the opal but with the addition of chert (with our own species too gympieite) which is this game at boss level. Awesome share and lots of fun to watch ✌🤩✌

5:51 Variety: Onyx is a banded Chalcedony with pronounced visible Banding. The bands can be seen with the naked eye. It would just be Species: Chalcedony.without banding.

hmm come to think of it, in lapidary groups i almost always see carnelian labeled as "carnelian agate", but in jewelry making groups its just "carnelian". same with bloodstone, the lapidaries usually include the "jasper" in their posts, finished cabs, slabs, or rough stone. i never really noticed it before this video though.
it was fun trying to follow along and organize them in my head lol. did pretty good, the purple opal threw me too.

This reminds me a lot of biological taxonomy in a way, how things tend to defy our attempts to categorize them, causing exceptions, combinations, and grey areas.
In this case it's pretty implicit because categorizing minerals into gems stops being purely scientific and starts incorporating aesthetic values. i.e. Minerals have definite formulas while gems are minerals subcategorised by marketable colours/etc.

According to the G.I.A. Gem Identification Lab Manual... a Variety: Agate, Species: Chalcedony must display visible banding. Variety: Jasper, Species: Chalcedony has different specifications and features.

I love this video so much; you don't know how many times I've been standing around listening to rockhounds debate whether chalcedony is agate is jasper is opal and even when you show them it's all the same chemical.composition mostly it's eye difference and opacity and play of color that distinguishes them, they still like to argue😑

Scrap the categories. I made a new one: "Beautiful stones". Also, on topic of chirt, jasper and agate: if it's transparent with a flashlight only, is it agate or jasper?
If it doesn't show visible Banding, it is not a Variety: Agate, Species: Chalcedony
@@KrosanBeast315 I don't think you can give "species" to rocks. I'm also a firm believer that if it's translucent, it's agate, even if there's no banding. Because a piece of agate that would come from between two bands would still be agate, even without the banding
So I'm looking to get into this field I'm very interested done a ton of investigation and effort into gemology I'm a horticulture expert and this interests me
Where does flint go? Ive always thought that chert and flint were the same except that flint is dark and chert is light. Common opal looks just like chalcedony. How do you tell them apart?

3:47 Variety: Aventurine, Species: Quartz is NOT a Species: Chalcedony. Quartz and Chalcedony are two DIFFERENT Species. It's not that hard to get it right.

Hey, I'm 24 with no prior knowledge on gemstones and minerals. I appreciate this channel's efforts in educating the viewers but for people like me with short attention spans, all I hear are fancy words and see pretty rocks. It would help to add highlighted keywords or mini-notes (definitions/categories/etc) in the video post editing.
If I may, I would love to see a video of your expertise/reaction to popular animated media that are gem-themed like Steven Universe or Houseki No Kuni (Land of the Lustrous). It would be extra awesome if you showcased the very gemstones these shows use as well. Thank you for your hard work!
9:16 That is a bad example of Trade Name: Pietersite, Species: Quartz. Pietersite should have more vivid colors of Crocidolite than that.
10:55 Variety: Bloodstone, Species: Chalcedony DOES NOT fall under Variety: Jasper. That is a huge mistake. Bloodstone is one of the few official Varieties of Chalcedony as defined by the G.I.A. Gem Identification Lab Manual.
According to the G.I.A. Gem Identification Lab Manual, NO official Varieties of Jasper exist. All patterns and colors that are NOT Dyed are Trade Names ONLY.
If no "official" varieties of jasper exist, yet the eye can still tell there are, then the GIA rulebook does not matter, here. It's like saying red and green jaspers are THE SAME THING because GIA does not mention colors.
@@davidcovington901First of all, it's NOT a 'Rule Book'. That is EXTREMELY disrespectful given what it says for the descriptions of over 700 known Varieties and Species. The Gem Identification Lab Manual is a critical piece of equipment for all Graduate Gemologists. A person usually cannot make a proper Identification without it unless the material is so distinctive it is easy to Identify by sight, or is so exotic is not found in the Lab Manual and must be sent to a G.I.A Laboratory for a full analysis using Raman Spectometry.
According to pg. 127(red) and pg. 234(green) of the G.I.A. Gem Identification Lab Manual, those colors of Variety: Jasper, Species: Chalcedony ARE the same thing(Welcome to Gem Identification rules for labeling a Gemstone correctly 101). If I marked something as Red Jasper or Green Jasper as the Variety Call for Chalcedony on the 20 Stone Final Exam, I would've FAILED it!
Under the Variety Call for Jasper, it lists it as "General variety term for opaque Chalcedony of any color or combination of colors except solid black or specially named material." Even Jaspers going under such names as "Brecciated", "Leopard Skin", and "Mookaite" all are Trade Names, and NOT Varieties.
The rules are finite, and as a Graduate Gemologist, I know all too well how using a Trade Name as a Variety Call come back to haunt you. This is why a proper education and why labeling things correctly is so important.
4:12 Variety: Tiger's Eye, Species: Quartz displays distinct and visible Chatoyancy. This material doesn't. Another amateur mistake.
9:16 Pietersite is NOT Hawk's Eye and Tiger's Eye put together. Pietersite can occasionally have naturally occurring Red and Pink in it, something Variety: Tiger's Eye, Species: Quartz and Trade Name: Hawk's Eye, Species: Quartz cannot show naturally. A rookie mistake.
You seem to really need an outlet for your pedantic comments. Seeing as your knowledge far exceeds that of the hosts of this video (according to you), why don't you start making your own videos? The thing is, you'll need to be friendly and likeable... and you definitely don't come across that way.
I love the channel. I think the hosts are great. Rob needs to stop gendering the stones. We need to find alternative words for "this guy". The this guy counter on this episode was quite high.
