Yoda's ruse is a nod to a samurai film trope, called The Stranger on the Road. This is where the blade master would test the student traveling to train with him, by pretending to be someone else, before they met in person. The goal was to judge the character of the student, when they think nobody is watching.
Yes, that trope--- or one might just say theme--- goes way back in history in Far East traditions. Great spiritual masters (whether the warrior or the straight religious kind) used to often test prospective pupils--- by first acting like total *fools,* just to gauge those kinds of initial reactions. (To an extent--- you can even see it in the first "Karate Kid"!)
I often think Yoda's introduction is often overlooked in this movie. When we first see him we think that this character is just a bit of light hearted comic relief even if Yoda drops one or two hints as to his wisdom. "Wars not make one great" for example. But essentially we see him as a cute comedic character. Which is why when he reveals himself to be Yoda it's so great.
The Luke/Leia kiss was a thing because at the time ESB was written, Luke and Leia were not intended to be siblings. There was an intended love triangle between Luke, Han, and Leia at play. Luke's actual sister was going to be introduced in Ep 6, but when Lucas decided to cut the saga short he repurposed Leia as the long lost sibling. So much of SW in the beginning was put together on the fly.
So the "No, there is another" was supposed to be for somebody else, or again Leia, but she would've been just Force sensitive (Organa DNA Force sensitive alternate script), without relation to the Skywalker DNA ?
@@akotarakz it was meant to be another character not yet introduced...not Leia. It only became Leia when Return of the Jedi was written. Lucas originally intended for the saga to run through 6 films with Luke falling to the dark side and his sister having to turn him back, but after Empire i guess he changed his mind. So he decided to wrap things up with Return of the Jedi
At the time of this movie, George Lucas had not yet determined that Luke and Leia were siblings. The intention was simply to be understood as an attempt to make Han jealous. Had you not already known about their relationship, through the prequels or just from things you overheard, it would have seemed like just an ordinary kiss.
The ice planet was filmed in Norway. They wanted it to look real, but this was almost a major disaster as there was a once in a decade blizzard that came during the production. The part where Luke is in the snow by himself and Han finds him, that is an actual blizzard. The OT Star Wars plot lines were put together on the fly. Think about all the re-writes and plot leaks they had to deal with...they had multiple scripts just to keep certain secret points in the story from getting out.
I think George kinda ruined his own series by doing the prequels the way he did. What used to be one of the most earth-shattering twists in pop culture film is now just...another scene. It completely flies by some reactors, compared to the impact that scene used to have. The prequels should've been entirely devoid of any mention of Vader at all. And we should never have learned the twins' names. That way, newcomers to the series are still in the dark about both of the OT's big reveals: Vader is Luke's father, and Luke and Leia are actually twins.
When you see the Prequels before the Original trilogy the Luke and Leia situation gets these reactions. 😏 ( I grew up seeing the OT first when they came out. )
4:04 Taking out arms and legs is a good way to incapacitate an opponent without actually killing them or causing serious injury (especially in a universe with artificial limbs like these).
I love that Yada goofs around with Luke at first and doesn't tell him immediately who he is. I really like that we get to see a less serious side of Yoda when they first meet.
The cold of Hoth was filmed in Norway. The scene where Luke has left the animal's cave and he's wandering around in the snow was filmed out the back door of the hotel they stayed in up there.
The confrontation between Luke and Vader is fascinating to watch, because when you remember that Anakin was one of the greatest swordsmen in the whole galaxy then you realise that he is in COMPLETE control of the fight the whole time, every step of the way he's just toying with Luke and stringing him along, maneouvering him where he needs him to go. The only time this changes is on the catwalk when Luke gets that lucky hit in, and Vafder decided that's enough of that and it's time to shut this down, so he just ends the fight in THREE DEFT MOVES, finishing with cutting off Luke's hand. Pure, brutal precision, utterly ruthless efficiency. Anakin Skywalker gone to the Dark Side indeed.
i find what's interesting is that he uses 2 hands when he needs to actually take the fight seriously, most opponents he uses 1 hand (mostly in later-released content). he was cautious about Luke for two reasons: luke is a novice (a danger to most accomplished swordpeople), and he didn't know if his own son would be as powerful or more so.
When the movie first came out, a different actor had been used for the hologram of the emperor. It was only in later versions that it was replaced with the more familiar face.

Great reaction. Only thing is with your reaction video is that you left out an iconic line. When Princess Leia tells Han that she loves him and he responds by saying "I know" is one of the most iconic Star Wars moments.
Honestly, watching these movies in chronological order takes so much away from them. I know George Lucas said later that these movies become the tragedy of Anakin Skywalker under that lense, but the truth is he didnt plan it that way from the beginning, he just was very good at adapting on the fly.
R2 is the best, absolutely. The true hero...the whole story would have ended prematurely if not for something he does in just about every episode. Ben Burtt is a sound design god. The sounds are all his, with direction from George Lucas. Nobody can do what he did anymore... Outdoor Hoth scenes were filmed in Finsk, Norway. The rebels in the trench were members of their snow ski rescue team as extras. This is the best SW movie, overall. It establishes the nature of the force in a stronger way, providing the core for all the stories after. And so well put together despite the technology limitations of the time. Yoda lifting Luke's X-wing out of the bog is a top-tier cinematic moment.
40:53 the fight here although Luke is present, is actually between Anakin and Vader!!! there is now conflict within!! the tiny peice of Anakin which survived has been awoken by hope in Luke!!! and wishes to be liberated from Vader!!! Vader on the other hand wants to remain dominant and in control and wants to kill Luke!! Severing all ties to the life of Anakin Skywalker!! this would certainly make sure that the small part of Anakin inside him dies!!! .. that’s why at the end of this fight the dialogue of Vader changes, one minute Vader tries to Kill Luke, then .. it’s Anakin who actually saves Luke from Vader’s anger.
Great reaction :) It was fun to watch. Regarding the cave scene, when Luke asks "What will I find?", Yoda answers "Only what you take with you". The cave is strong in the Dark Side of the Force and basically it shows Luke a few things: 1. It shows him what obsesses him (his hatred for Darth Vader) 2. After he decapitates Vader in his vision, it shows him that lashing out in hatred and anger will turn him into what he hates the most (cause him to fall to the Dark Side) 3. It foreshadows the relation between Luke and Vader. Another point I wish to make : Not enough credit is given to Vader's understanding and mastery of the Force. When Luke had a vision of Han and Leia's misfortunes on Bespin, it was the future he saw. Vader purposefully made Han and Leia suffer, going as far as torturing Han to use them as bait to draw Luke to him. This means he knew, as a Force user, that due to their relationship, their suffering would cause a ripple in the Force that Luke would sense in the past and come to rescue them. Hence Obi Wan saying "It is you and your abilities the Emperor wants. That's why your friends are made to suffer." Vader had the mindfulness and understanding of how the Force works to plan actions that would have consequences in the past and shape the present to his designs.
The Empire Strikes Back was filmed at Hardangerjøkulen Glacier in Norway. Visitors can tour the glacier year-round and stay at the hotel Finse 1222, where the crew stayed during filming.
Arms and legs are easily concealable in a costume or even with careful camera positioning. Cutting an arm or a leg can be done quite easily special effects wise. External snow scenes were mainly filmed in Norway with the help or the Norwegian army. No matter the original strength of the cable, the more turns it makes the stronger it gets. Luke's saber is blue just like the background, that's why Vader's red saber stands out more.
Something that's not obvious from the movies, is why there's a difference in power from the Snowspeeders, and the X-Wings. The Rebels had to cobble together anything they could get, from anywhere, and make it work. Snowspeeders are more like local Police ships. They can't break orbit. Their weapons are meant to be less destructive. X-Wings are fully space capable, pressurised fighters, with lasers capable of damaging OTHER armoured, shielded space capable ships. X-Wings are fully capable of breaking orbit and dog fighting in the atmosphere of a planet, to devastating effect. Every single one of those Snowspeeder crews, knew that they needed assistance to escape the planet. They went out, knowing they'd likely die, or be left behind.
My recollection is that they shot this somewhere in Norway. And while they were there the country had the worst winter they’d experienced in years. But they also dealt with a really bad storm in Tunisia when hey were shooting A New Hope. AAAAND…. It happened AGAIN when they went back to shoot for The Phantom Menace
The main reason for the yeti attack at the beginning of the movie was because Mark Hamill had an automobile accident some time prior to episode 5. His face now looked slightly different, so this was inserted to explain his look in the movie.
To clarify the role of midichlorians - they are an indicator of how in touch with the Force you are - everyone has different amounts. But you have to train to unlock your full potential. It's partly genetic, so Anakins children have a high potential to use the Force but haven't unlocked it yet.
@@Tijuanabill I didn't say that they were mentioned in the OT - I said that they were consistent with what was established lol And as for Disney.... well, they're the last ones to respect the established consistency and canon of SW lore
The first time I heard that word, I thought "Great! Lets put it on a bottle and sell it like a sports drink." Now I'm trying to imagine it as a body's response to force energy, not a cause of it.
1:57 Because they're very estranged from 'The galactic empire'. Besides, some months after 'Death star I' s' destruction 'Vader's fist', 'Empire' s' elite squad, attacked Yavin IV, conquering the rebel base.

The reason why the rebellion chose Hoth as a base was that they searched for a barely known system with a hostile to life environment because the Empire would not prioritize searching for them there. :)
If I remember, the actual line Vader says to Luke during filming was "Obi-Wan killed your father"...which isn't exactly false, but the Leia thing wasn't rewritten until the next movie, so "The Kiss" only got icky in retrospect.
First off the characters don't know at this point so it's kind of a moot point. Also Lucas knew they were siblings from the start, and Hamill knew the actual line when filming the scene.
@@znk0r no Mark H did not know. He was on Graham Nortons show and said they filmed scene with David Prowse saying Obi Wan killed your father. Later Director Irving Kirshner pulled him aside and told him what was really going to be. Only Lucas Hamill Kirshner and James Earl Jones knew real line. Ford after seeing the scene at premiere he turned to Hamill and said "Hey kid you didn't fucking tell me?"

36:19 the guy that was following them was a little kid in episode II in the city on the sea, with his dad!! Jango Fett, the little boy, or now man is Boba Fett.
12:20 - the way Han Solo talks & works with Chewy as they’re repairing the ship, reminds me of how I talk to my parents as I repair their computer & phone issues. Haha. I need to work on patience.
Watching this movie through your eyes was like seeing The Empire Strikes Back for the first time again. Vader recognized that Luke was his son during the destruction of the Death Star in a New Hope but didn't recognize his own daughter despite being in close and prolonged proximity. Twice! It was never explained why Darth Vader was blind to Leia. (The real reason was George Lucas decided at the last moment that Luke and Leia were siblings--Obi-Wan and Uncle Owen knew already that Luke was Darth Vader's son--though Lucas didn't incorporate that into the story until the last moment) This is an excellent example of how to launch a plot twist. In The Empire Strikes Back, there were clues such as Luke's face in Vader's severed helmet and "there is another." Vader's obsessive search for Luke Skywalker had a reason. (most of all, Lucas managed to keep the plot twist secret until the movie premiered by limiting the cast and crew who knew about the line that Vader was Luke's father--on set only Lucas and Spielberg and Hamil knew because the lines were dubbed in post-production).
The reason Vader did not kill his Admiral is becuse he understood it was R2 that got them out of the aituation not to the fault of his men. Vader was also at the time extremely dissapointed and sad over the fact that Luke would potentially kill himself rather than joining him.
Filming location for the ice planet Hoth=Hardangerjøkulen Glacier, Norway. There is still a small hotel there, with pics from 1980, the actors and movie crew stayed there. Hope it answers your question--have a nice day.
Thats the big downside of watching the movies in chronological order instead of release order.......you miss the shock of Vader being Luke's Father and the true introduction of Yoda
1:53 "Why would you pick an _ice_ planet to be on? _I_ hate cold." When you're organizing a _rebellion,_ the best place to be is a place the Empire is not inclined to _look._ That means you have to get good at not letting your personal _comfort_ be a priority. On a personal note, though, I usually tend to get along with it pretty well. Not _this_ kind of cold, though. When it's so cold that _trees_ can't even grow, it's too cold.
38:34 so the significance of Vader’s width to Luke’s is because of the power difference and naturally role, as Anakin was full fledged Jedi Knight when transitioning to Sith Lord, .. Luke on the other hand although born Jedi like his sister, his force ability is unstable and limits him to use (classifying his capabilities as Padawan) .. and the force makes this known in the most basic of ways with the appearance of lightsaber blades.
8:14 "It's a good bet the Empire knows we're here." "We'd better start the evacuation." And that's the appropriate _response_ when you know the Empire's coming. You know you can't possibly defeat 'em. You're _whole defensive strategy_ has to be built around holding them _back_ long enough for you to _evacuate._
I believe the majority of viewers love TESB more than all the other star wars movies because the protagonist is han solo more than luke skywalker but the story is getting luke ready to defeat vader and the emperor so even though return of the jedi had ewoks (wookiee inverted-lucas wanted wookiees to overthrow the empire) I love the OT equally- critics didn't warm up to TESB back when I saw it in 1980
22:29 "I hate snakes, guys. Sorry." That's one distinct advantage to colder _climates._ Snakes have adapted to a wide variety of environments, but being reptiles, and therefore exothermic, they need _warm_ weather. In colder climates, they tend not to be _found._
I think you would enjoy the anime series Violet Evergarden. It is about a girl who was wounded in World War I, and given prosthetic arms and hands, and now has to learn how not to be a soldier as she also learns to process the emotions she suppressed growing up as an orphan and a child soldier. It is very tender and heartwarming, funny at times and exceptionally beautiful (it was a Netflix show and had a huge budget). If you can find it in your neck of the woods, it is well worth a watch.
13:08 "Why are you still here?" Why are _you_ still here, Princess? Why were you not on the first transport to _leave?_ Can you begin to fathom how _devastating_ it's going to be to the rebellion if you're captured or _killed?_
21:20--Carrie Fisher had a self-admitted crush on Ford..."There's just something about him that says, I'm a M-A-N!!" she sighed to Oprah on her show. (It shows in thier scenes together lots) And a scoundral is, well, A bad boy who goes against general society rules /etiquette but still has a rough charm about him.
I always felt that the point of watching a movie reaction channel is to see if someone loves or hates films that their audience already knows and also love or hates so I really don't understand how so many people flood the comments section telling them to not bother with this or that sequel that they happen to not like. Hopefully you'll watch the sequel trilogy too. While they're really divisive amongs fans and are far from perfect, they do have their good points and you might actually enjoy them. At the very least, it's important for everybody to make their own opinions and I would be really interested in seeing yours.
13:03 "He went back in for the _saber?"_ He went back in for his saber and his _gunner._ But there wasn't time for both, he's not done fighting, and it takes a _lot_ less time to grab the saber than to go through the whole, elaborate process of unstrapping his gunner from the _restraints._
37:17 "You said they'd be left in the city under my supervision." "I am _altering_ the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further." This is the _problem_ with diplomatic relations with a party like the Empire. If you strike a deal with them and _they_ violate it, what can you do?
Thank you for watching the video, It means a lot to me .

09:45 This actor also played the old maester of the red keep in GAME OF THRONES.
To clarify the role of midichlorians - they are an indicator of how in touch with the Force you are - everyone has different amounts. But you have to train to unlock your full potential. It's partly genetic, so Anakins children have a high potential to use the Force but haven't unlocked it yet.
@@Tijuanabill lol cope. It lines up with what was established in the OT, the genetic component especially
@@Tijuanabill I didn't say that they were mentioned in the OT - I said that they were consistent with what was established lol
And as for Disney.... well, they're the last ones to respect the established consistency and canon of SW lore
The first time I heard that word, I thought "Great! Lets put it on a bottle and sell it like a sports drink."
Now I'm trying to imagine it as a body's response to force energy, not a cause of it.
You have to train unless you're Rey.
@@theveryworstluck1894 There there. It's okay. You're okay.
And your reaction at the greatest plot twist in film-history is why Star Wars has to be seen sequenced like it came into cinemas.
The blue saber that Luke loses in this one when his hand is cut off *is* Anakin's old lightsaber.
1:57 Because they're very estranged from 'The galactic empire'.
Besides, some months after 'Death star I' s' destruction 'Vader's fist', 'Empire' s' elite squad, attacked Yavin IV, conquering the rebel base.
The kiss was OK , there was no tongue 😂 The “I am your father” line was huge in 1980 .
07:00 Hardangerjøkulen Glacier, Finse, Norway
@7:00 The Hoth scenes were filmed at Finse, Norway actually. And they got to experience proper winter with pretty strong winds afaik.
"I wonder if anyone will end up without an arm." It's a Star Wars fight. You already know the answer to this. :D
“I am your father.”
Probably the biggest “shocker moment” in movie history.
5:03 “Artoo is the real MVP”. No one will disagree.
'You should put it back in the water..." Ha! I wish that he would have done that.
8:04 was filmed at Hardangerjøkulen Glacier in Norway.
Is the Obi Wan ghost and Qui Gon coming back, coming together from episode III?
-Rogue 2. You got it 😉
-Great awareness of the filming methods of the day regarding visual effects.
-Intro to bounty hunters and haven't noticed Jango Fetts armor although different in colour?
-Trash dump and still nothing 😵 Wow. Episode II was a while ago wasn't it?
-This is the guy who was following them. Yep I've lost hope 😂
-Ah yes! The high ground. 🤦🏾♂️
-The rule of 2? 😳 Somebody's been reading up on their lore.
Another great reaction.
Besides the wonderful review of my favorite Star Wars movie of all time, the thing you did with your coffee in the beginning was priceless! And than calling the him a kangaroo, hilarious! Thanks for being so great in your reactions!🎉😂❤
Best film in the whole (9 movies) saga! "Laugh it up fuzzball" - still cracks me up! 😃 "I'm not watching GoT, incest is not it" 😆
Biss calling midichlorians - mennonites 😃 "dog down" 😃 "daddy's here" giggles 😃 Your reactions are so much fun! 😊
@@raybernal6829 he says it himself in interviews...
ruclips.net/video/krHwUKp0CWE/видео.html
@@znk0r well it looks like MH is conflicted as I just watched him on show say he learned of it after they filmed scene. And only him GL IK and JEJ knew of actual line.
@@raybernal6829 I remember an other interview where he said they told him so he could act out the reaction better and his "over the top" reaction was kind of confusing for the people on set. I dont know if he started embellishing things at some point but that sound right to be.
Hardangerjøkulen glacier near Finse, Norway, is where they filmed the Hoth scenes
(The real reason was George Lucas decided at the last moment that Luke and Leia were siblings--Obi-Wan and Uncle Owen knew already that Luke was Darth Vader's son--though Lucas didn't incorporate that into the story until the last moment)
This is an excellent example of how to launch a plot twist.
Swamp on, swamp off.
The reason Vader did not kill his Admiral is becuse he understood it was R2 that got them out of the aituation not to the fault of his men. Vader was also at the time extremely dissapointed and sad over the fact that Luke would potentially kill himself rather than joining him.
I loved your reaction to _"The Kiss"_ 😂
Weird Al Yankovic has a Star Wars song called "Saga" about Anakin.
You know Vader is pissed when he decides to just walk away instead of choke someone.
the exterior scenes were filmed in Norway.
There's a rumor the area was later renamed Harrison's Fjord.
just got back from work and did not see it!
You gotta love Admiral Piett aka The Luckiest Man In The Empire aka The Survivor
Looks like you have an imposter Bisscute.
1:53 "Why would you pick an _ice_ planet to be on? _I_ hate cold."
When you're organizing a _rebellion,_ the best place to be is a place the Empire is not inclined to _look._ That means you have to get good at not letting your personal _comfort_ be a priority.
8:14 "It's a good bet the Empire knows we're here."
"We'd better start the evacuation."
And that's the appropriate _response_ when you know the Empire's coming. You know you can't possibly defeat 'em. You're _whole defensive strategy_ has to be built around holding them _back_ long enough for you to _evacuate._
Julian Glover is the actor who played Maximilian. He also played Grand Maester Pycelle in GoT.
My favorite of all the star wars films, plus my favorite sequel.
I believe the majority of viewers love TESB more than all the other star wars movies because the protagonist is han solo more than luke skywalker but the story is getting luke ready to defeat vader and the emperor so even though return of the jedi had ewoks (wookiee inverted-lucas wanted wookiees to overthrow the empire) I love the OT equally- critics didn't warm up to TESB back when I saw it in 1980
21:05 Han and Leia are my parents.
'I just kissed your girl. That's my sister. That I kissed. That she kissed me. That's my sister.' Bisscute really not taking this well. xD
"I hate snakes". You would get along with Indiana Jones quite well :D - another good movie series to get into.
Vader: The force is with you young Skywalker... But I have a pink lightsaber and you do not.
7:21 I love the reactions of people that somehow managed to avoid all the incest jokes about Star Wars for years.
18:07 "R2 got spit out."
Of course. The odds are _infinitesimal_ that, even in this _other_ galaxy, there exists an animal that can digest _metal._
22:29 "I hate snakes, guys. Sorry."
That's one distinct advantage to colder _climates._ Snakes have adapted to a wide variety of environments, but being reptiles, and therefore exothermic, they need _warm_ weather.
13:08 "Why are you still here?"
Why are _you_ still here, Princess? Why were you not on the first transport to _leave?_ Can you begin to fathom how _devastating_ it's going to be to the rebellion if you're captured or _killed?_
I was 15 and we saw the first Star Wars movie 7 times in theater in about 2 weeks. Movie tickets were about 5 dollars back then.
Oh nice, thanks for watching ❤️
Back in the earlier movie C3P0 is worried that he and R2 will get melted down by the Jawas. And so here in this movie it almost happens to poor 3P0.
This movie is all my childhood The best movie that i have watched in my life May the force Be Always with you Forever @Bisscute🥹💝🫶❤️🔥
hoth was filmed in Norway.
Speaking of Game of thrones, General Veers is played by Julian Glover, who played Grand Maester Pycelle on Game of Thrones
The snow scene's were filmed in Norway
The snow scenes where filmed in the Sierra Nevada mountains in California
You know this story.
For me this is the best Star Wars movie. Out of all the ones i have watched so far.
Can’t wait to see your next reaction ep 6 is one of the best imo
Hoth was filmed in Hardanger Norway.
Filmed from March to September 1979 in Finse, Norway, and at Elstree Studios in England......this is according to Wikipedia
13:03 "He went back in for the _saber?"_
He went back in for his saber and his _gunner._ But there wasn't time for both, he's not done fighting, and it takes a _lot_ less time to grab the saber than to go through the whole, elaborate process of unstrapping his gunner from the _restraints._
38:45 - I almost rolled out of the window from laughing.)))
37:17 "You said they'd be left in the city under my supervision."
"I am _altering_ the deal. Pray I don't alter it any further."
This is the _problem_ with diplomatic relations with a party like the Empire. If you strike a deal with them and _they_ violate it, what can you do?
OK, that pronunciation of 3PO isn't getting any less adorable.
I can’t believe you yelled “parkour!”
Yoda had a good reason to get on Luke's nerves to test his patience to see if he could train him
