That boat came with a removable splash board that should be installed between the transom and cockpit. I don't see it anywhere and assume it was left on the dock. The deck cover at the stern of the boat was also left open. If either one (preferably both) of these had been properly installed/secured, there wouldn't have been a problem. Neither of the people on the boat reacted to the water pouring into the hull until it was way too late. Blatant negligence and total incompetence. Moving the anchor to a stern cleat, or not deploying it at all, may have helped but the real issue was lack of preparation and situational awareness.
I was thinking the same thing. You should be able to sit there all day long like that and not take waves over the back.
Maybe drop the anchor from the stern so the boat spins on it?

The most incredible thing to me is that both simply ignored the water coming into the stern. But… then again the one trying to anchor looked caught off guard when the anchor failed to grab with the line near vertical. As soon as the first wave went over the stern the guy should have tried retrieving or simply feed line out as best he could. Also, as stated they should have tried getting the jet ski to reorient the boat
I have seen this scenario a couple of times. And I believe that dropping a stern anchor to keep the bow into the swells would’ve been a better option until they got help.

I carry a stern anchor in my little 21' Starcraft, but I suspect it might not have occurred to me to set it in a case like this. (not that I'd ever bring my boat through an inlet like this one) Appreciate the opportunity to learn from another's mistake.

Looks like they were getting pulled straight out and wouldn’t have ended up on the rocks. Needed to anchor from the stern to get the bow facing the right way for them not to take on water. It all happened really fast it seems though, idk if they even had time to make the adjustment after they dropped anchor off the bow and started taking on water.
Situational awareness is critical in all areas of life.
You have to know what’s going on around you.

Nobody ever thinks about rigging the anchor from the stern. But, yeah, in this situation you ride the current back out and. deal with it outside the breakers.

That happened too quickly and at the worst time. I'm not sure if even a more seasoned captain could have guaranteed a better outcome.
A combination of being inexperienced and unprepared was their undoing,had they used the momentum of the waves to keep moving and the steering to try and avoid the rocks it would have got them away from the inlet and into calmer waters. In theory they could have used a boat hook or something to avoid any rocks but they didn’t seem that well organised.

Not having the splash boat at the back right before the transom, to stop the water from coming in. Secondly, knowing the splash board isn’t there, they shouldn’t have dropped the anchor. It was only a matter of time before the waves started to push the water over the transom.

Definitely had to have a hatch/decklid open or something and filled the hull up fast. Plus the transom splash guard was not present. That boat sank way to quick. Granted, boats cant take repeated waves over the transom, but the self bailers on the deck should have been able to keep up much longer than that if the hatch/decklid was closed and splash guard in place.
Would a Drift Sock help ? Can't tell wind direction but if it was an outgoing tide the sock would of pulled them into the waves yes? But drifting out of the inlet would of been my choice first.
If that strap he was throwing had a hook of some kind he may have gotten towed enough to get out of the waves. Did he expect the seadoo rider to just hold on to it? With a hook the rider could have hooked it to the back handle, maybe.........
Should have bought a Boston Whaler and a Yamaha or Suzuki outboard engines.
Boston whalers don’t sink but Boston Whalers aren’t cheap, and they only come with Mercury engines.
The cheapest Boston Whaler 28 footer costs $280,000 with engines and an anchor, and that’s it, it would be way more with options.
The more expensive Boston Whaler center console, the 280 Vantage model, costs $330,000 with engines and nothing else.

Unless there were heavy winds and or the tide was slack they would have drifted in or out with the current. I think they were in fear that the waves would broad side them so they thought the anchoring would point them into the waves.
They could possibly have used the jet ski to drag the stern round so the bow was into the waves, and held it there til help arrived
Should’ have dropped anchor off to transom, then walked the anchor rope to the bow when the boat is turned around
I am not a boater but enjoy the channel. Is this boat a total loss or can it be taken out of the water and saved? Thanks for any reply
The engines and fuel lines probably can't recover after being waterlogged like that.
With the outgoing tide they should have dropped anchor with it tied off in the stern. If the anchor wouldn't bite they might have been able to tie off a cooler from the stern to act as a sea anchor. That might have bought them some time to get a tow boat out to them.
Try and Face the bow into the waves and not put an anchor down. The dead rise is higher towards the bow than the stern so water would of been harder to get in and it would just rush off to the back.
First mistake was having Mercury outboards. Not known for their dependability. Second mistake was not having enough line on board to make a reasonable tow line to give to the jetski, then having the jetski secure the line to the ski rather than trying to use their hand.
The tide was obviously going out faster than the wind coming in, so I don’t know if they would have been able to keep their bow into the wind even if they had turned the vessel around.

Bought a boat but didn't invest in basic instruction course.
They would have been money ahead by not dropping anchor. The enemy they saw was the rocks. The engines will more than likely be a total loss. The hull by itself is likely salvageable. The entire project engines, wiring, and everything else. Insurance won't come close to the complete damages. Damages to repairing the hull is pennies.
A fiberglass scratch starts at $1000 to repair, $140 an hour where i live. Pickling an engine and changing fluids much cheaper.
@henrye718 changing fluid numerous times is easy, plugs are easy, clear water rinse, and pull and replace all electronics. The easy part has just been done. Several hours on the water performing sea trials. Nothing is plug and play. Let's assume labor is at $80 an hour. Conservatively, we are looking at 10 hours. I think 10 hours of labor is a gift. Repairing fiberglass is expensive. The boat owner is facing salvage costs rather than dewatering and towing it in. The one thing we can agree on is that he had a very bad day on the water.

Too many mistakes to account. Probably use this in a video of what not to do. What the heck kinda boat has no backsplash. Just because you can afford a boat, doesn't mean you should own one.

I know nothing about boats, but it seems to me if the guy wandering around the boat would have bailed rather than walking back and forth doing nothing, he may have saved the boat.

Thanks god! His smartphone made it into the Police boat first! Did you see this? He was more concerned about his phone than the life-jacket when je jumped off that sinking vessel! Unbelievable ...
Moral: do NOT forget the drain plug, folks. (do these machines ever come back up off the floor of the inlet?)
First mistake was taking such a boat out onto the open ocean to begin with. Rinky dink side barriers are so low, you should stick to the lake on a calm day. What a waste of money even buying this thing.
