Very good video. Very comprehensive tax advice. The fact that this information is made available for free is phenomenal. He gives better advice than most accountants that you have to pay for.
If audited, give power of attorney to an accountant and send him or her. That way if the IRS asks a tough question, your stand-in can say he or she will have to ask you about it. That gives you time to come up with a good answer. And if you declare travel expenses, remember you do not need a receipt for any expenditure of $25 or less when you make entries into your travel log,

how was it a waste of time. Should have been pretty quick. You had a W-2 and thats it I am guessing. The only other thing they would have done is look at your financial history to try and find other unclaimed income. A lot of people at that age get paid under the table and an audit can easily find it when your bank statements dont match you income. Its why I tell people, if you make any money under the table, keep it in cash and simply spend it on non necessity things. the reason for non necessity being so the IRS c ant ask the question, how did you pay your mortgage or where are you monthly grocery bills.

Honestly though even if you have a 4 or 5% chance, the IRS can at any time look back over years. If they notice patterns year after year they're gonna bug ya. That 5 percent in a way becomes 35%
The audit risk may be decreasing because the IRS is using digital analysis to initially identify more serious issues, rather than conduct lots of audits and have most of them not be worth the time and expense.

This question probably won’t get answered but worth a shot. I’m active duty military. I moved this year from Hawaii to California. Due to some extreme mess ups in paperwork(not my fault) I ended up spending around 10k on my move. This is a combination of the navy not understanding my move while doing 2 quarantine periods as well as not paying for lodging for 3 months because my “move status” wasn’t clear in the paperwork. I ended up paying out of pocket for all of this and through everything it ended up being 10k. Went through the process of getting this back and basically have been told tough shit that sucks. Can’t do anything about. I think it could be complicated for me to prove this if I got audited but technically I have over 10k in moving expenses from military orders that were not paid for by the military. This was a deduction on my taxes. I’m kind of scared to file. How much risk am I taking by filing this 10k deduction? I made around 130k total this year. 50-60k ish of that is taxable income from the military. A little over 30k in investments and the rest is untaxed allowances. Any advice?
Thanks, it's in process but since I still technically owe them money, they'll take all my refund away from me. I'm a college student, and that could've helped so much.
This is so interesting! I work at a low-income taxpayer clinic helping low-income clients with very large tax debt. While it makes sense that the IRS would rather go after wealthy taxpayers and businesses, the wealthy can afford lawyers to combat the IRS. Many of my clients have $200k(+) in federal tax debt. Please don’t think you won’t be audited if you don’t make over $500k! Great video, I just don’t want viewers to get the wrong idea.
One year, I had started a new job and quit my old one. I started in February, so when the next year rolled around I only did my taxes for that W2. Two weeks after I turned in my taxes, I received my w2 from my previous employer. The amount was only about 4k. My family thought that federal agents were going to break down my door. I just told them that they're not going to bother. It would cost the IRS more money to have an agent even contact me than what the amount of taxes would have been.
Brian, your channel is great. When I received my undergrad degree in accounting, (many years ago) our tax teacher (who worked in the IRS tax department for years) told us there is something called a "random audit"...a tax return pulled at random (without any IRS personnel looking at the return before it is pulled for audit.) At that time, the random audit rate was 1 out of 100 returns (when the IRS had far more resources.) All of the variables you discuss in this video had no connection whatsoever to a random audit. The IRS simply pulled 1 out of 100 returns at random for audit. Of course the percentage rate of a random audit would be far lower today. Do you know, does this type of audit still exist? Thanks.
Hi Ronald, yes, this type of audit does still exist. However, if the average is 1 out of 100, they're still using the targeting method for the vast majority of the audits. So the "random audits" would more likely be 1 out of 500 or 1 out of 1,000. Resources to the IRS are just drying up each and every year. Even the IRS agents will tell you the same.
@@itrthho Thanks George. I think it was always called a "compliance audit" (official IRS terminology.) It's been 40 years since I took my tax course at college. Went directly into teaching college accounting, retired and never taught the tax course over the course of my career. Your answer rings a bell, now.
You make a dollar, you pay a tax on that dollar. Spend that same dollar, you pay another tax. We get taxed at least twice for every dollar, why??....also what are the odds of changing the 16th amendment? Or starting a "keep the fruits of your own labor" movement??
Buy a car with some dollars. Then you pay tax on the dollar you made, tax on the car that the dollar purchased, then tax on the "property" every year. Triple taxation
In Germany, an average person pays income tax, and he pays various social security , like the retirement contributions. That german person has to pay taxes on his car, then he has to pay taxes for his cars insurance , he has to pay taxes on his fuel too!! He pays taxes on food and other consumptions, taxes on every single thing he touches... And what's the worst part ? His state retirement contributions, are being taxed to him when they pay them back to him when he reaches the age of 67..... and if u wanna retire at the age of 45, they tax his retirement contributions at 50% .... Oh and guess what, the reason electricity costs 0,35$ here, is because 25% is tax, 25% some other shit and 35% is renewable energy tax..... to finance the energy companies to build renewable energy sources.... so instead of letting the energy companies to use their profits to build the wind mills, they force "us" to pay the energy companies to build the wind mills for the energy that will be produced from them, to be taxed again!!! Only 15% of the energy bill is the actual energy cost + profit ......

Any advice?

I believe the term for this audit has been changed to “compliance Audit”
@@itrthho Thanks George. I think it was always called a "compliance audit" (official IRS terminology.) It's been 40 years since I took my tax course at college.
