One of the best jokes from the original was Ryoga complaining that Ranma was offering him week old bread, only for Ranma to tell him it was Ryoga's fault for making him wait a week.
I was obsessed with Ranma 1/2 years ago, but this new adaptation is the first time I've watched it in years. So far I think it's great. I think the pacing is fine, even in the 90's I thought the old show was a bit slow. I tried to watch Maison Ikkoku back then and it was so slow it was unwatchable. I was shocked when I read the manga and loved it. So yeah, I think the old animes for both had a ton of unnecessary padding.
ye the old anime also had a looot of filler. i even dare say that half of it was filler. 10:30 also all those scenes are not in the manga and as of now the remake is being very faithful to the manga so we prob wont get all those extra scenes in the future too. if they do decide to adapt everything we can expect 10-11 seasons (judging by current pacing)
The fast pacing of the remake occasionally makes some moments go by too quick instead of letting them sink in or expanding on their significance. However, having been watching the original sort of side-by-side with the remake, for every expanded scene in the original anime that added characterization, there were 2 or 3 that were just pointless wastes of time. I'm looking at you, "science club".
The pacing in both have pros and cons. The original series just shows some fun fillers for the manga to get ahead and there are better moments between Akane and Ranma at times. The new one is good and skipping filler but at times it's too quick and the music is rather dull.
What you guys are talking about around 7:20 I agree is an issue. I'm watching the original and reboot concurrently for the first time, and I've noticed all the pacing problems. They're trying to cram 3 episodes of the original into each reboot episode, which has problems. Despite being GenZ, I loathe the destruction of our attention spans due to tik tok, and I think this is part of the reason the reboot is doing this, to appeal to an audience with short attention spans. I agree there's lots of filler in the original, but it still had charm. For example, in the first episode when Ranma and Akane are bickering and she hits him with the table, that felt so rushed in the reboot that I don't think it did it justice.
It's not so much that they're adapting the original anime as that they are adapting the manga as it was. The OG anime added a lot to pad out time for the manga to stay ahead. Mind you this was not always bad as looking back at that first season there were a lot of nice scenic and musical spots sprinkled in that added a lot of atmosphere to the series. But at the same time there was at times too much such as in the OG Ryouga vs Ranma episode as mentioned here that had an entire subplot of the chemistry club trying to get a Ranma during his fight since they wanted Akane and Nabiki taking bets and cooking the books (And fight) in trying to make sure they got the most money. Stuff like that being left behind IMO is for the better. And in keeping with the manga and hoping that this does well to get more done I hope we can get to the later stuff like Herb, Ranma's mother, the Saffron arc, etc.
@@Windrave I agree completely. I just recently watched a vid about the filler to stay behind the manga, so I definitely understand what you're saying. I definitely though the chemistry subplot was lame too. I agree on the examples you brought up, but beyond that, other instances of the slower pacing I enjoyed, as you mentioned. For example, when Akane walks in on Ranma in ep1, the long pause followed by Akane silently backing up and closing the door was hilarious.
@@Alpha1918 Also agreed on that last part. Honestly from this first season I'm gonna miss the ending of the next arc when a certain rhythmic gymnast makes her debut. The ending with Ranma at the pond and the flowers was anime only but it was hilarious at the same time with how it played out.
@@Windrave For me, I'm hoping they don't botch the ice skating arc. Imo (I've only finished season 1 today) that was the peak of their relationship/the season. They were working together, he was defending her honor, and they were hella cute. Then Shampoo ruined everything lmao.
@@Alpha1918 I have faith they will do the ice skating arc well! I'm glad we at least know that's coming based on those two being in the opening credits. I am wondering if we will make it to the introduction of Ukyo though...

Love Ranma, subbed 💪
