In this episode we look at a 2006 base model 997 and take it out on the road to see how it performs. This review of the Porsche 911, 997 will give you good insight into what to look for.

    Beautiful car!
    I have a 997.1 2007 Carrera 4 as well. I rebuilt my engine with 3.8 L. After that I have no complain at all and love my car very much. And I am enjoying the totally different feeling and sound. I will keep my car as long as I can,
    There is no reason to buy new standard factory machine assembled car. I recommend to get one of these 997 for the person interested into get it. It's worth it!

    Great video. I couldn't agree more. My 06 C2 Cab 6MT in Guards Red is a perfect blend of power and handling. I wonder about the S and Turbo models being more powerful and quicker, but at the end of the day, this 3.6 NA ticks all the boxes. The PSE option is a must have and I love it. I've been offered 20k more than I paid for it 2.5 years ago. I've waited a lifetime to be able to finally own this car and I'm reluctant to part with it. She's a keeper.

    This car would be at least $65K CDN in todays market.(spring 2024) I'm thinking about a 997.2 C2 but they are even pricier. I have two Boxsters, a 2009 'S' with a PDK, and I just bought a base 2004 manual in Carmona red metallic with a full saddle leather interior. It's the nicest 986 I've seen. What I like about the 986 is that I can drive the wheels off of it and not lose my license. That's why I'll be buying a base 997 as well.

    Terrific video, Bruce! Paul and I might just be the same person! For all the reasons that he mentions, I too have a '06 Carrera C2. Don't need more car than that for the road. It will do anything I ask of it. I get pretty good economy (25-26mpg consistently) on regular unleaded. No IMS issues with the 997 and if you get the car up to temperature every time you drive it and run clean oil, the bore scoring doesn't scare me a bit. I drive the car almost every day but not for short trips. Will usually only take it if I am looking to drive at least maybe 10-12 miles or more. I do put some Sea Foam (the little bottle) in the tank with every fill to keep the fuel system clean and lubricated. Otherwise, awesome, trouble-free car. Thank you for the great video!

      When the only tool you have is a hammer, everything starts looking like a nail. The company you mention pretty much is saying all engines should be partially rebuilt for 8k without symptoms!!!
      Of course that’s all they do.
      Then they point out 1/2 their business is Canadian (because this problem is a cold climate problem).
      So my 06 that has spent 13 years in the Deep South and 2 in Chicago should be rebuilt? What?
      Zero oil burn between changes at 5000 miles and over 70k on the car. Oil has been tested and gas is not in oil. Metals in the oil are at or below spec. They point out some cars have gone 280,000 miles before this problem appeared. Sorry, I’m not buying it. Wait on symptoms then fix for me. I’ll take my chances I’ll never need it.

    • @aboyandhisdog
      @aboyandhisdog 3 года назад +2

      @@paullangan3153 I agree, Paul. Sure, some cars can have bore scoring, most by far never will. Lawn mowers also can have scored cylinders. If you take good care of an engine and treat it right, you put the odds in your favor and won't have a problem. Much negative hype about an issue that most cars will never experience. I expect my engine to last for several hundred thousand miles without issues.

    • @FrequencyOfThought

      Any engine with Nikasil coating is prone to bore scoring ! Welcome to modern aluminum engines

    • @Audidude
      @Audidude 2 года назад

      @@CENTERLANE Not at all "apparently so" common! Some do for sure, the 3.8 more so than the 3.6, but while flat6innovations is enormously experienced, over 90% of their work is with those affected engines. Having watched their videos you'd come away thinking EVERY 997 will be bore scored eventually. That is simply not the case. If there's a problem fix it, but by far most cars won't have the problem.

    I'll take the 996 cockpit any day over those plastic 997 buttons that wear our like a cheap Yugo. Exterior design as well. 1999 996 only 300hp sub 3000lb 911, doesn't have the bore scoring or IMSB problem of 911's from 2002 - 2008. The cars built in 98 were also better put-together. After 99 Porsche was looking to cheapen the 911 and make profits and target the lawyer's wife, while hiding behind hp leaps as supposedly better.

    • @CENTERLANE

      Lots of problems to watch out for in a 997 for sure. Thanks for watching.

    • @Audidude
      @Audidude 2 года назад

      I've had a 996 and have now got a 997.1. There's no comparison in the cockpit quality, the 997 being streets ahead. The column stalks on the 996 are possibly the worst I've ever had - plasticy and flimsy feeling with a wooly action, feeling like they'll break easily. The wiper speed control is distinctly odd - took me a while to even find it!
      You're also wrong that the engine in the early 996 doesn't suffer bore scoring. All M96 engines are vulnerable, but few in fact do (unlike what some alarm merchants would like you to believe). And the early 996s do have IMS problems, but with their double row bearing, at a much lower rate than the songle row later nearing. But outside the cockpit, the 996 is a ripping drive, at least the equal of the 997 for driver involvement.
