@acostin4004 My friend absolutely loved him up until she got permission to meet him backstage. She said he was standoffish and nasty. She couldn't believe how nasty he was to two fans.
When I heard Freddie had died, this is the first thing I came to see. Probably his greatest moment. No swearing or violence, just elegant, natural, confident storytelling. RIP.
There were many strings to his bow, that's for sure. A proper comedian from the Golden Age of British Television!!! We'll never ever see his like again.
I was surprised at how long Al[ felt he had to "play the Game of being the stooge" instead of simply cutting him short and telling him he has being boring. Parkinson was a similar type of manipulator, as was apparent on the Meg Ryan interview. The 2 had no integrity and were cringeworthy to watch.
I remember his TV show when he did a football match with him playing all the roles had Elvis and Hitler on the pitch and Ray Charles in goal I thought I would never stop laughing, it was the talk of the office, pubs, shops and streets for weeks 😊
The greatest showman, the greatest boxer. Bloody brilliant. The way Ali gets so invested in this tale! I'm 33, I've seen this so many times and to this day it still cracks me up, even though I know what's coming hahahaha. Rest in Peace you 2 magnificent legends!
Ali had a special relationship with the UK after our Boxing commissions refused to accept that he was stripped of his World title after he refused the draft. He always remembered and honored the UK for that, it was also the reason we had him (sadly very ill at this point) be the flag bearer for the raising of the Olympic flag at the 2012 London Olympics. The UK was also one of the few countries at first that accepted his name change when he converted to Islam, as the view in the UK was they didn't really care as long as he was still as amazing of a boxer as he was before. There is a Doc on YT from ITV called 'When Ali Came to Britain' that tells the story of the Ali/UK & Ireland relationship, at times, Especially after the Draft incident, where he was disliked in large parts of the US, he was still adored and beloved over here (mostly because we knew it was a stupid War)
Well said 👏🏻 We loved him as if he was our own and you can tell just how much that meant to him. To be taken in by another country when your own had turned against you must’ve meant a lot to the big man. What an incredible human being he was ❤
@kerryharrison3806 : Why, aye, wer canny as fuk, us, man 😉👍. Me, Nanna & Granda also loved him. They actually got to meet him when he came out of the Mosque, as it's only a stone throw from where they lived. They said there was nothing pretentious about him. He had time for everyone.
The greatest story ever told... Must have watched it 100 times over years but I always sit and listen like its the 1st.. Very funny.. RIP Freddie and Ali
Freddie told that story so well! The way Ali jumped was so unexpected he was that drawn in! Brilliant Freddie he was at the top for a long time but the media ruined him😢 Rest in peace two legendary men.
The only person to ever scare Muhammad Ali lmao. I saw Freddie live he was an absolute comedy genius. Comedians today don't have the same charisma as the older comedians did.
Freddy Starr was on stage in Bournemouth in 1974, Summer Season afternoon show. I was watching the show with my parents. I was five at the time and by all accounts would not shut up. I kept on asking my mum, “when is Cuddles coming on, when is Cuddles coming on”. In the end Freddy Starr said “will someone chuck that kid off the balcony”......... so my Dad picked me up and to everyone’s delight held my over the balcony........... Thankfully he didn’t let go!!!!!
This is just British tele at its best.... As an American who lived in Ireland and the UK from 14 to 23...1980-1989....I truly miss the Quality programming across the pond... Used to have cable TV....1000 channels and nothing on. .ok ok...there are some good shows...but it's all premium paid channels.. Growing up in Ireland we had RTE 1 RTE 2(Irish) BBC 1 BBC 2 and Channel 4 (UK) That's only 5 stations ...broadcasting usually ended by 1am...so if you were up later you could always pop in a video.. But there was always something good on Tele to watch ...miss those Days
one of the greatest comedians ever. Freddy Starr is one of a tiny few that have made me cry laughing. This was a classic clip, so funny, a classic Freddy. His laugh at the end just kills me.
This is what made Muhammad Ali a good champ, He knew how to take a joke. Boxers now would get angry if that happened to them. But Muhammad Ali knew he was the best so was not bothered about getting scared.
Boxers today would have come back swinging and beaten the fuck out of Starr live on telly. Starr would have ended up looking like a mannequin made of raw mince!
I used to watch FS back in the 70's when I was a boy. I just read that he's gone. You get to a certain age, and people you remember from your childhood start to die, it's a sobering feeling. This clip is a wonderful testament to both Starr and Ali.
Me too I can never aeem to fnd that insane 'footie match' fromone of his shows in the mid 70's? He had Adolf,Frankenstein and even Ironside in one of the goals I nearly died laughing as a kid lol!
Freddie is such an amazing story teller. He just knows how to captivate and engage you. Just sucks you in with his facial expressions, eyes, hands, his body, a flicker of his lips, his acting. Just a masterclass in storytelling.
When Television did what it promised Entertainment and access to the stars unscripted highly entertaining. Three of the best at the zenith of each ones Mount Olympus.
Why why do you have to bring this Muslim thing... This exclusive muslim, christian club that you guys try to create was the last thing he wanted in his life. He is beyond a narrow Muslim label. i once went to see freddie at blackpool with a load of work mates. he had the audience in his hands, it was almost 2-3 hours of non stop laughing. he was brilliant.
This is one of the best clips I've ever seen from 2 absolute legends. One of the greatest ever showman & arguably the greatest boxer of all time in one clip. It dosent get better than this.
I can remember a school teacher telling us a story like this back in the day, would have been around 1976 as I recall, the only real difference was that unlike the way Freddy did it to Ali, what she did at the end was just calmly point her finger at us and said...."YOU DID IT"....but it was just as effective though, I could feel the hair on my head stand up, we just didn't see it coming, it was the way she told the story, just like Freddy, she was a really good story teller, got your attention and all that, cheers :)
+Terry Tanktop Well , he could have slipped to the left and KO`d Freddie with a hook . You really want to make the greatest boxer who ever lived jump ? Or the joke could have fallen flat . That was brave .
Great interview! Who cares about stupid rumours that Freddie dropped one (let flatulence go) that both Muhammad & Michael later said was like tear gas & rotten eggs it made their eyes water, both Freddie & Muhammad were at the top of their game here & Michael is one of best TV interviewers ever.
When I saw him live in Harrogate 25 years ago he was the daftest comic I’d ever seen. Little legs and manic energy. The woman in front of me fell off her chair laughing.
Absolutely brilliant, completely got inside the big man's head and really succeeded in frightening him. You could tell all three really enjoyed it, despite of the class A's Freddie was clearly on, he was very much in control. Great clip.
Three legends all now sadly gone, rest in peace Michael Parkinson, Mohammed Ali and Freddie Starr.
Time stands still for no one.
Freddie starr wasn't a legend he acted out like jimmy saville..
@acostin4004 My friend absolutely loved him up until she got permission to meet him backstage. She said he was standoffish and nasty. She couldn't believe how nasty he was to two fans.
Oh Lord yes! They've all gone now sadly! There treats on the one show how epic was that
We're all heading there pretty soon.
Ali was unreal , he could relate to any character of any class or social group without any affectation. RIP champ.
Freddie didn’t just keep Ali quiet, he kept EVERYONE quiet! Magnetic personality
When there were only three channels and we were happy 😊.
So true 👍
Even 5 was too many 😅
I show my grandson and his mates stuff from when I was younger than couldn't believe me
And we were still being force fed Emerdale, and Coronation Street back then too.

Freddie Starr managed to do two incredible things, not only did he scare the Greatest, he also managed to keep Ali quiet for almost 5 minutes.

And a tremendous singer too.

A huge talent.👍
I hope Freddie and Ali are in heaven laughing together. RIP to the pair of them.

I love how he claps his hands in absolute childish delight at having scared the champ.

Freddie Star, in his heyday, and like Ali, was an unstoppable showman. RIP Freddie
Absolutely - spot on.

He visited my hometown, South Shields, in the North East. He spent a lot of time with the locals & he even renewed his wedding vows at the Mosque.
