    I flew 6 channel Helli's for many years before I got into quadcopters.. and I flew LOS for the first year of having a quadcopter.. FPV was way out of my price range then.. I did find that putting bright colored props on the front of my quad really helped me keep track of its orientation when it was a bit farther away.

    Hello Andy, I bought the Tyro79 shown on your channel. Im an old fixed wing pilot. Every part, without esc and flight controller, I had to change because they quit working.
    Just within two months.
    I tried LOS first, because I was a little bit afraid of fpv. But a 3inch is too small for longer distance.
    So I did fpv with my planes first. Then I was comfortable with that and I changed to the kwad.
    Sometimes I get seasick from drone flying, but it's so much fun to me.
    Now I build a 5 inch on my own.

    From someone who made the mistake of doing my 1st slight (and sending it!) via line of sight. ESP. Coming from traditional camera drones. Don’t make that rookie mistake. Use the goggles when starting out. Then move to line of sight flying with FPV. Without the goggles I lost orientation 2 sec. after take-off. Nice job on the sponsorship Andy! 👍

    oooh, a Skillshare sponsorship, you've hit the big time now :) Thanks for the Sim shoutout, it was most useful you flying LOS in it that time as we found that odd error about where the pivot point was and allowed me to fix it. I don't know if you'd agree with this, and I really don't do acro LOS, but I always find that when starting to fly LOS that keeping yourself flying forward when starting to nose in flying (or circuits) is a lot easier than attempting to hover. I always find it much easier to imagine myself from the quads point of view that way (similar to how you imagine standing behind it all the time)

    • @AndyRCchannel
      @AndyRCchannel  2 года назад

      the problem with always moving forward is that it can get away from you quickly in real life but if it works for you in the sim and can translate to real life then go for it. Cheers Wayne

    Thanks for this Andy👍! I have flown line of sight for many years. From sailplanes to now collective pitch helicopters. I totally agree that LOS flying is a must have skill. I built my first mini quad in 2012 to help me learn coordinated turns when I was struggling to fly helis. It made all of the difference in the world! I even set it up later with reversing motors to practice inverted flight, much less stress than practicing with a 550 size heli ;) . I mostly fly my quads fpv now but test fly LOS first. Just realised I place my view behind the quad and rarely fly directly towards me for LOS too. I enjoy flying LOS rather than all this FPV GPS phone nonsense 😂 it's the skill of flying that's the challenge for me, although I find my thumbs really ache after a while and find it quite draining after around 20 mins due to high levels of concentration. I use old school Phoenix flight sim I grabbed at an RC convention probably 12 years ago now and a cheapo FlySky i6 with one of those 22 in 1 USB dongles to practice and learn. Then take out my self designed and built quad (similar size to the one in this vid) using the FS-i6 and Cleanflight too. Fun!

    I wonder why you didn't mention Freerider as a Sim ?? It's been around forever .. it was the first sim I got. I did install Currykitten but haven't tried it yet. Another Sim, which also requires 'Steam' is the DRL Sim .. but I think that one is more geared to racing than acro/freestyle. I think there's quite a bit of disparity in the 2 flying styles. Those who are good racers are not necessarily good freestyle pilots .. and vice/versa. A long time ago, there was a good freestyler named 'Charpu' (still some YT vids of his online). He's the one who got me to build my 1st quad (ZMR250 - 3S - 1806 motors) and, of course, I had to have a Taranis X9D+ to go along with it (which I still have). I'd had a break in my flying from my competition fixed wing days (where I flew Mode 1) .. so when I started flying quads, I just went with Mode 2 (all the toy grade TXs were set up that way). I flew a lot of toy grade quads (all LOS) which helped when I flew other quads. Still not good at Acro .. need some more time on a Sim. Perhaps its too late for this old dog to learn new tricks, as I've been flying RC craft for 60 years, going back to single channel days. Cheers!

    I'm halfway where you are. I can do some tricks los sight, powerloops all directions and even the "suicide trick" (blip the throttle when upside-down) but somehow I can't take a corner properly los.
    But switch it to angle mode and I race across the field a foot above the grass making orbits and corners like a pro. Put on a goggle and now I can't fly in angle mode.¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    the difference between drone and plane los is that the drone doesn't self align forward to forward
    that's why it's harder

    • @AndyRCchannel
      @AndyRCchannel  2 года назад

      I think you mean angle of attack? planes do have that problem its just more catastrophic for a quad

    • @marc_frank

      hmm no, i mean yaw
      the vertical stab keeps the front of the plane pointing in the direction of flight
      one could code a digital vertical stab for betaflight, that would make los much easier

    • @AndyRCchannel
      @AndyRCchannel  2 года назад

      @@marc_frank oh thats interesting. I find the yaw is the one thing thats way more locked on a quad than a plane but as i said in the vid everyones different

    • @marc_frank
      @marc_frank 2 года назад

      @@AndyRCchannel yeah it is more locked, but you have to steer it yourself completely
      when flying a plane i like to bank and yank, but if i do that with a quad los it goes all over the place XD

    • @AndyRCchannel
      @AndyRCchannel  2 года назад

      @@marc_frank ah yes. bank and yank is good for beginner planes however some instructors iv come across only teach that and its not ideal. biplanes for example need a lot of rudder on the turn or something similar happens to what a quad would do with bank and yank. Coordinated turn as its called is a skill needed for both fixed wing and quads. But if you are flying your quads fpv you must be doing coordinated turn, so I think you can transfer the skill to los :) just an idea though. If you are happy with what you are doing there is no right or wrong. its all about the smiles
