In this episode I provide the history of the Dodge Ram, which was the renamed Dodge D and W series pickups starting in 1981. The name Ram was also used for the Ramcharger SUV beginning in 1974. The first gen Ram wasn't much different than the model it replaced, but was completely redesigned for 1994 with a new look that would make the Ram the most popular model for Chrysler in the 1990's. The Ram would maintain a similar look for the third and fourth gens, but the fourth gen in 2009 would no longer be branded as a Dodge, as the Ram name would officially become its own brand in 2011.

Ram absolutely set a styling precedent with these early Rams. I think they're still some of the coolest looking trucks out there. The LA-derived Magnum 318 and 360 were excellent engines, too! While Ford and Chevy made some truly great trucks during the 90s too, Ram's styling has always made them stand out.
Yup! I own a 94.
The Ram in Twister was cool, but the Comanche was the real star
If only they got the transmission dialed in 😢
A friend of mine has a 1994 Dodge Ram pickup that he bought in 1998. Still.runs great after all these years. The Achilles heel in this truck are the dash plastics that crack like crazy and fall off.
Can you do a segment on the Ford Explorer sport truck?
They also did separate the srt brand to its self..... u should make a video about that...
Cool 😎
I think Ram trucks look bloated.
Try as they might, ram trucks will always be dodge trucks to me.
A friend of mine had a 2004 that he bought when it was new. He loved telling people that it had a Hemi. It wasn't for nothing either. I once rode with him after we filled the bed to the brim with bags of concrete which didn't seem to bog down the engine at all.
You're only media mentioned is the movie Twister. I think Walker Texas Ranger was a bigger deal than twister, it was an earlier media exposure and only helped feed the fandom of the truck.
Fall 1993, I was checking out the new1994 Dodge Ram at a local dealership. The sales rep pointed to 1993 Chevy Silverado that he had taken in on trade...apparently the former owner thought the new Ram was so cool and different, he traded in a nearly new Chevy for it.
The 3rd Gen Ram 1500 5.7 are by far the best-looking trucks to this day
The year was 1994, and Dodge Dealers couldn’t keep these in stock. They drove 10 times better, were 10 times more refined, and arguably light years cooler looking than any Ford or Chevy. The only reasons you didn’t buy one: There were none in stock around you, you didn’t quite have the money (they were a bit more price wise), or you were a Ford/GM faithful and were embarrassed to admit you wanted one 😂
i do understand peoples mistrust though. dodge is famous for poor build quality and abysmal reliability despite the fact they’re super cool. i’d certainly have bought a chevy c/k and then admired the dodges from afar where i wouldn’t have to pay the shop bills for a ram
At the time, our shop truck was a new 93 Chevy C2500 with the diesel. Reg cab, long bed. Though it sipped fuel, and was a real workhorse, it was so slow! This thing had 411s in it too. I recall 1 of our employees got a new 95 Ram 2500 4x4 std cab long bed with just the 318. He could dust our service truck after 35mph like we let off the pedal. His truck only had 355s in his diff.
@@adamtrombino106and the Chevy is still running
Until the front steering wears out and you get the wobble of death
@@hypercube33 that’s completely easy to fix. Tie rod ends and bushings
Thank you for the dodge ram episode I love these trucks
The 90s Ram (especially in Red) will always remind me of the movie TWISTER! 🌪️
The 90s Dodge Ram has so much character, with the bold front end, and nicely pronounced fenders. I might have to find one and buy it. I really like em.
poor American quality
@@dylanjimenez1952Get one with the Magnum V8 or the Cummins diesel and a manual transmission, and they're rock solid dependable trucks
@@dylanjimenez1952 yeah unless it has the hemi i wouldnt but it the 3.7 and the 4.7s have the same issue of valve seats held in with spit and tape
Twister is the reason why I love the 2nd Gen Dodge Ram.
Today the RAM 1500 crewcab is dads minivan. Go to any flag football game and see a lot FULL of them, all used as minivans.
I LOVE this channel with all the commercials, TV and movie clips👌
_🤷♂️ just sayin_
From chasing criminals in Texas or chasing Twisters, the Ram looked good doing it.
Dodge: *unvails Ram pickup concept in 1986*
Ford in 1992: interesting 🤔
To this day, nobody truly understands why they separated Ram from Dodge.
RAMbunctious...??
Because Fiat wanted to sell each divison to other companies..They tried to sell Viper..They wanted to sell Jeep and separated RAM from Dodge to make it easier for a new company to rebrand the RAM truck as theirs..Thats the only reason why! They told us!
@@mypronouniswtf5559 When you say "us", do you mean Chrysler employees? That's a real shame. The more I think about the path that Chrysler Corporation has taken since 1998, the more I despise Bob Eaton. I have always been a Mopar guy and all I own right now are Dodges. If I had to buy a new vehicle today, it would probably be a Toyota or Hyundai.
Once a dodge always a dodge ...
Still remember when the 93 redesign was released. It turned heads and EVERYONE wanted one!
Correct
In 1996, while on high school wrestling road trips, we played games who could point out the most Dodge Rams with bonus points for quad cab dullays. That’s how special these trucks were at the time. Like nothing else on the road. Yes, we were all car dorks.
Hemi 5.7 with the ZF 8 speed is a great combo
That ZF transmission single handily brought Ram from having the worse transmission on the market to the absolute best. ZF 8 speeds are legitimately that good
I fell in love with the RAM because of the movie Twister
RAM otherwise known as Rusty Ass Metal! Dodge trucks rust out before they get off the assembly line!
The Dodge Ram from twister in the thumbnail was the icing of the cake
The confusing part about the Ram spin off is what to call the model. It went from Dodge Ram to Ram uh 1500 I guess 🤷♂️
I’ve been waiting for this one
Me too I wish it was longer
Omg when the 1995 dodge ram came out man that was it. Ford still had the obd style and chevy still had the look of the 1988 chevy witch was a very good looking truck in the right color. But when the ram came out in 95 in the 2500 or 3500 everyone thought that was the coolest truck ever.
I still always call the newer trucks dodge rams just to piss off the fan boys🙂🙂
How does that piss off the fan boys? RAM is still Dodge,Chrysler same thing..Whats odd Ford guys got mad when you called their Mercury a Ford and GM guys go crazy when you call a Chevy truck a GMC they get livid..RAM guys know their truck is a Dodge anyways, same comany same thing and it was a Dodge anyways so you make yourself look like a tool.p
These things used to rust like crazy, especially around the wheel lips.
What make of truck didn't?
You should do the B Series Ram Vans too
I loved those Trucks. They looked great. Chevy Trucks were fabulous during those years. Rams were the best looking. THEY need to made Dakotas again.
Thank you for including the Dodge RamCharger. I know I bugged bout it but finally. Suggestion
Toyota Cressida
They’re hardly on roads now a days
To me, the 2nd gens will always be know as "Walker's truck," as the first time I saw one was on "Walker, Texas Ranger."
Can you do a video on the Nissan sx cars?
These things put Dodge and Chrysler on the map on the truck world . I remember seeing these things everywhere 😊
I got a 96 ram it's crap but it always starts so I love it
Good Video on the Dodge Ram and Ram Trucks, I'd remember the 1 from the Movie Twister where the main characters are trying to get away from the Tornado when it tries throwing a lot of things in their way from Farming equipment to a house which they drove right through which was kind of cool & funny at the same time and also escaped a tanker truck that the Twister throw at them.
I think it’s time for an episode on the Honda Del Sol.
The 94 Ram is much cleaner in design than these overgrown cartoon trucks we have today.
Plymouth trail duster is such a cool truck!
I remember test driving a dark green 1500 94 Ram with the 318 V8 in So Cal. It was so unique at the time.
Twister is one of all-time favourite films and it was the first time I had seen the new Ram! It was such a hero in the film. Great video
Love the 1972-1993 Full Pickups and RAMCHARGER.
Serious question for ram truck fans. If ram/dodge never partnered with cummins would you still be a fan?
Yes,because they sell 50 times more non Cummins powered trucks than Cummins powered!
If GM didn't use Isuzu Duramax diesels would people still buy GM trucks, answer would be the same yes as they sell 50 times more non diesel trucks
I currently have a 17 Ram 2500 Cummins and once owned a 97 3500 12 valve Cummins. The only appeal was the Cummins engine. I’ve owned over 20 different makes and models of vehicles around those two.
Dodge could have tried to keep the Dodge truck brand and then add on an upscale Ram brand as well. Basically like Chevy and GMC does. And GMCs have a lot higher sales margin. Or maybe made the Ram brand the "Denali" of dodge trucks 🤔🤔
That's an interesting idea. The Ram pickup would have needed a different name at Dodge at the time.
Thanks, Jeep started the SUV craze a long time ago. They also made many weird variants. I had a '78 Cherokee 2 door with huge tires from the factory. It was a great truck, they made some iconic vehicles like the Wagoneer which are still popular today. So a video about Jeeps would bring in a lot of peeps!
Great video sir 👍 I was a 3rd grader when twister came out and all the boys would run around the playground playing "twister" we always fought over who gets to be bill with that badass red dodge ram 💪
Can you do a video on the 1987-1993 Dodge Dynasty and C platform variants?
5:17-5:27. Looks like a combination of a Dodge minivan and 92-96 Ford F series.
I bought a brand new Dodge Ram 1500 Extended cab in 1996. It was silver and I made it a clone of the Walker, Texas Ranger truck.
the 3rd and 4th gen trucks w/Cummings sale for top dollar... still a great engine!
Semantics. It'll take decades for the Ram thing to take hold.
It’s the wonder of nature baby!
I had always heard the 2nd gen Dodge Ram front end design was inspired by semi trucks.
Dodge trucks look good . Power Wagon is one of them . I had Hot wheels Dodge trucks !
Excellent video
Rams look better than fords or chevys by far!!!
Cow 🐄
Chuck Norris drove one that was enough for me to buy one..
The black Ram from the movie Cobra comes to mind.
What about the newest two generations?
always thought the ram of 1994 was an ugly ass truck, but in 2002 it was a great looking truck
Yeah when the 90s ones came out I thought they looked kinda puny and cheap...
I bought a 95 standard cab short bed 4x4 new, was a great truck!
Well, that I drive used vehicles. Purchased a 2001 Dodge deully just last year with low mileage. The truck still work's great.
Great video, Pat.
as ive gotten older ive started to really like crystler and dodge
American pickup trucks have become huge, cartoon sized, embarrassments. So much bloat. The pickup truck of 2023 is the modern version of the American sedan of 1953 - large, rear wheel drive, V-8, four doors, and a locking trunk.
Do people know you can rent a pickup truck when you really need one?
Thank the EPA for that.
Most of the FORD's have twin turbo V6's.....but yea.
Why rent when I can use mine anytime I want as its parked in the driveway
1953 cars were equivalent in size to 60's and 70's mid-size offerings.
I keep saying that the designers of the 70's & 80's Volvos have found a new job. Designing present-day American full-size pickup trucks.
Cool video!
It just posted when you commented, did you watch it?
6:16 99-01 ram charger is rare.
Modern Rams are doodoo with the exception of the Cummins, but even the Cummins name is being sullied by Dodge's poor manufacturing.
The Plymouth Trail Duster SUV should have at least lasted until 1993. They also could have used the Trail Duster name for a Plymouth version of the Dodge Durango.
Could you make a video about the Dodge Durango that was around the same year?
The 2nd gen Dodge Ram would have absolutely ruled all if their leadership would have pulled their heads out of their @$$ and offered a full 4-door crew cab. That idiotic decision alone, costs Dodge millions of dollars.
It’s still a Dodge! The 6 cylinder Cummings turbo was the best motor ever!
Hard to believe that Chevy couldn't come up with a real half ton crew cab pickup until 2006.
Suzuki Aerio/Liana please.
I would like to see and episode with the 2006 thru 2011 cadilac DTS.
I own a 2006
What about the Nissan Titan? It was produced between 2003 and 2023 for the 2024 year, it's another of those vehicles that are ending production very soon
SINCE WHEN DID THEY STRUGGLE? That DESIGN GRABBED A BIG CHUNK OF MARKET SHARE THAN EVER BEFORE!
Mentioning wanting to see cars from the early 2000s I'd like to see a video on a the Honda Pilot.
Cool
🚗🙂
I want a video specifically on the 2nd gen DODGE ram 😂😂
As a kid in the 80's I LOVED the Simon and Simon truck.
When thay truck was made. They asked the guys who were making the new head quarters. What did they want jna truck. This was the result.
I own a 2000 2nd gen Ram 1500 quad cab. I have owned this now for 14 now & plan on keeping it a long time this truck currently has 176.000 miles on it I bought it in 2010 with 142.000 miles on it !!!!! LONG LIVE THE DODGE RAM !!!.
Ram is ok for a model name, but sounds stupid as a brand name. I still call them Dodge, and always will.
if it looks like a Dodge, smells like a Dodge, and breaks down like a Dodge, it's probably a Dodge
I'd go dodge than Ford for chevy. They look so much better than other modern junks
Chevy claimed that their truck is better than Ford . However Ford is still number one for the pickup trucks that are built
Ram SRT-10 is faster and cooler . The red Dodge Ram looks good with custom wheels
Dodge is the mike lindell of car brands and Nissan is the Steve Bannon
how about covering the monte carlo z34 cars. Thank U
Ah yes, the start of the douchebaggery of pickup truck cults
Semantics. It'll take decades for the Ram thing to take hold.
So how come they didnt compete well with Ford and Chevy? Video never gets to the point.
Nowadays the Ram is one tough looking truck.
