I’ve been watching Tesla user videos for several years now. ( I have an X and 3) Yours are concise and informative and high quality without all the hoopla, intro’s and wasted space. About to subscribe. Great job.
Problem.....I like some of these solutions BUT...with the dash cam using one USB that leaves only one for charging. Definitely not interested in some DYI install popping off trim....cutting trim pieces and routing wires to other AC sources.... Too bad that we don’t have 4 USB outlets or that we have to use one for the dashcam. For now this means I’m going to stick with the standard wired connections to charge phones.
You can actually use a small USB hub in the car to attach multiple things to one of the USB ports. It does mean that one 5w USB port is sharing power with multiple devices, but it does work. I have this hub (amzn.to/2KgD0cY) and it’s working great to keep power to the right phone charger, as well as power two USB thumb drives (one for TeslaCam and the other for music files). I used some 3M Command velcro adhesive strips to secure it in place directly below the USB ports.
If you read the instruction pamphlet you get with a wireless samsung fast charger, it even says to keep it a couple feet away from you because long periods of time next to it has the potential to cause cancer. Maybe tesla wanted to avoid that.
One of my little gripes is that the phone platform has a really low ridge -- more than a few times, I have dropped the phone or other stuff into the storage area. One of these Qi charging pads should address that problem, too. I was pretty happy just to have built-in charging for my phone, so yeah, Qi is cool and all, but I don't think it's obvious that Tesla should have included one. Lots of phones don't even support Qi yet.
Good point that most existing phones out there don’t support wireless, but all major phones being released over the past year or two have it. And now that all iPhones support it going forward, it’s only going to become even more common place. I probably should have presented my point of view as “skating to where the puck is going, not where it currently is.” Regardless of the Qi or not, that low ridge is kind of crazy ... and how tight it is for phones. I have an extremely thin phone case and it was super snug.
Perhaps they were assuming that full self-driving would be ready sooner, and assumjned people would plug in so they can use their phones in their hands instead.
I do think they designed the car with self driving in mind (the center display says hello), but we’re a long way off from that being a thing. Cars typically stay in circulation for 20 years, so they may have been thinking about the Model 3’s second half of life.
Great - but with caveat. Given that Tesla gave us an option to use thumb drives and with limited 2 USB ports we are all stuck to use extensions and limited power. This is one of the reason for me not buying Jeda. I want to be able to have Wireless charging(Qi) and Lightning cable for older phones without the option of adding new cables. Any USB hub helps to elevate the lack of USB ports and charging? IMHO Tesla should redesign the USB ports availability from 2 to 4-6 with fast charging capabilities. This has been a big limitation for me.
I agree wholeheartedly that Tesla should have included either more USB ports, or at the very least higher wattage for fast charging. There are several USB hubs that have been tested to work. I’m picking up one of these for myself: amzn.to/2z07L1i And if you’re adventurous, you can actually pull some trim off and run some wires to the rear part of the console to get yourself fast charging capabilities to the front. Here’s a good write up for how to do it: www.reddit.com/r/teslamotors/comments/9mlek5/model_3_installation_of_an_anker_12v_to_usb_hub/ I wrote Jeda asking them about the charging situation with one port getting taken up for the dashcam and they said that the Jeda battery add on does help with this, but I haven’t tested it out myself yet.
Thanks Matt; they only have model 3 option currently but appears they're working on model X. I'll keep my eye out. Thanks for doing reviews on the same stuff that's been bugging me - oh and my appointment with Craft detailing is next week and told them your video referred me. You should get some free detailing :)
I was just at Craft Detailing on Friday for my follow up wash and they mentioned a few people have brought up my video. Thanks for mentioning it! I didn’t tell them I was making a video about my experiences there, so it caught them off guard. They gave me a little car cleaning kit as a thank you. While I was there for my wash their entire shop was filled with nothing but Model 3’s (5 of them). One was getting an incredible looking stealth black full body wrap ... absolutely gorgeous. It sounds like they are getting flooded by Tesla folks over the past few weeks.
Sorry, I should have included a direct link to what I was talking about: www.rpmtesla.com/collections/model-3-interior-parts/products/model-3-qi-wireless-fast-charging-pad-upgrade-49-w-20-off You can position the charging puck to exactly where you need it on one side, and leave the charging cable on the other. The price is also pretty good because you’re only getting one puck. Because they are only using a thin piece of foam to cover the charging puck and replace the Tesla rubber mat, it gives you a lot more flexibility to fit your situation. Hope that helps.
Does each USB connection power half the pad; or do you need both plugged in for it to work at all(or is there a diminished charging rate with just one)? I think I read somewhere that to use the dashcam feature in the version 9 software that the USB thumbdrive needs to be plugged in to one of the ports in the front of the car. If that's true, I'd ideally like to have the driver's side of the charging pad plugged into one USB port and a thumbdrive for the dashcam in the other.
Each USB powers half of the Jeda pad, so if you use the new dash cam feature (which I will be too) only 1/2 the Jeda pad will charge. For me that's not a big deal since I'm alone in my car most of the time, and my wife doesn't have a Qi enabled phone anyway. She can power off of one of the rear USB jacks if she needs to power up. If you buy the Jeda with the fast charging module, you can run both sides of the Jeda off the battery pack and the battery pack only requires one USB to charge. Another more invasive option is to go the RPM Tesla route (www.rpmtesla.com/collections/model-3-interior-parts/products/model-3-qi-wireless-fast-charging-pad-upgrade-49-w-20-off) and run a 12V adapter from the arm rest up to the center console.
It’s a new feature they just released in the version 9 software for all their cars. If you plug a USB thumb drive into the car, it will save video from the front camera. Handy if you get into an accident and need to prove what caused the accident. www.tesla.com/support/software-v9#dashcam
You can’t charge in landscape. The area that provides the charge is positioned for portrait position only and there’s a small divider that would keep the phone from sitting flat in landscape. You’d be better off getting the RPM Tesla charger because you have complete control over where you place the individual charging pads behind the foam cover.

I bought the nomad for $129 pre order. Should get it in a week :)
When you get it, drop back in and let us know how it’s working for you.
You'll love it sir. The Nomad is everything you could want from a wireless charger
I'm assuming that making full use of the 7.5 watt rating on the Evannex charger would require a >7.5 watt USB power connection.
John George Bauer-Buis it would, but the USB ports in the car are only 5 watt.
I have the Nomad charger. Took a little longer to get than the Jeda would have, but that battery for "fast charging" is built in.
Yeah, if fast charging is important to you, the Nomad is a strong contender.
Thank you nice job 👍🏻👍🏻⚡️
Thanks for watching!
You chose wrong with the Jeda pad. Lots of people are complaining that it warps from heat after a while. I own the Nomad pad, and it works perfectly.
If that turns out to be the case, I’ll definitely be posting a follow up.
Made the vehicle even better!

I wish nomad had one for my car. But my car doesn't have that space. 😩 Good video! Did you sign up for their affiliate program?
I haven’t ... didn’t know they had one!

It looks like the latest Samsung model states 20 centimeters.

Hi great video! Do you think it is possible to charge the Apple Watch on this charger as you are driving?
Nope, it only works for Qi enabled phones.
I will need one wireless charging (iPhone X) and one cable (iPhone 6S). Any recommendations?
You might want to look at RPM Tesla since you can buy a single charger.
Sorry, I should have included a direct link to what I was talking about: www.rpmtesla.com/collections/model-3-interior-parts/products/model-3-qi-wireless-fast-charging-pad-upgrade-49-w-20-off

Upgrade your old iPhone 6S. I just upgraded from an iPhone 6 to an XS. It will change your life.
alliejr Not mine. GF. I own the X and love it.

matt i wish jeda had a deal for us. I will buy one but you don't even get any credit!
Thanks for watching ... and me too. I wish there was some kind of offer or discount I had to pass along.
Forget the phone charger; they need to come up with wireless charging for the whole car.
Thumbs up to that one.
@@UndecidedMF ...otherwise a good review on the subject matter though :)
Appreciate it. Thanks for watching!
Solar panels on the car is what they need!
That would be awesome, although, it wouldn’t be able to generate enough power to fully charge the car ... but it’s better than nothing.
Is it possible to charge in landscape and will the cover still close if a phone has a semi thick case still close?
You can’t charge in landscape. The area that provides the charge is positioned for portrait position only and there’s a small divider that would keep the phone from sitting flat in landscape. You’d be better off getting the RPM Tesla charger because you have complete control over where you place the individual charging pads behind the foam cover.
Pretty sure the case is not a problem -- I have a bumper case on my phone and use a Qi charger at home -- works fine. But it's a good question.
