English is not my first language, so the way you speak ( very clear and not too fast) is very helpful. I love learning from your channel and you create such great contents! Thank you so much :)
You've come a long, long way with your video production skills and the quality of your output since this one, John. Even from this very beginning, though, you've provided useful advice and thoughtful commentary. My portrait work certainly has improved since I started watching your videos and putting your helpful instructions into practice. Thanks for having one of the best photo channels I've yet encountered on RUclips. Cheers.
Wow, thanks John! I am pretty sure that this was my first video. I guess making RUclips videos and photography are a lot a like. The more you shoot the better you get. Marry Christmas and Happy New Year!
@@JohnGress A "learning by doing process" for both, most definitely. (And boy, do I still have a lot to learn about each...) How much of a crew do you have helping with your videos now? Or are you still a solo production unit? Best holiday wishes to and yours; may 2023 bring even more adventure, success, and excellent lighting. Cheers.
A ton of great info here! I'm a huge fan of your work and thrilled to find you're making these instructional videos. If you make it to California for a workshop I'm there!!!
Thank you so much! I will be on my way back there, maybe this winter if all goes well. If you can, please sign up for my mailing list here to receive updates: johngress.com/workshops/
You should buy a baby pin and show how to mount a light properly on the extension arm using the baby pin in grip head. The hex end that kupo has provided is a fine reaction to people using the extension arms incorrectly but it increases the instance of the incorrect geometry that using the wrong end creates.
@@JohnGress yea my c stand came with arm and then 2 grip heads, i clamped grip head on end of arm with baby pin, but once weight is added, all it does is twist around and faces downward , im gonna have to pay 60 bucks to get kupo attached grip arm i guess, or just use the pole only without the arm
Love the content, but once my ear grabs on to the background I can't let it go and it's annoying. You have a great speaking voice, i just want to hear you.
I like that shirt. So many of the creators i watch on the youtube just wear black. Makes me wonder if it's an artistic choice, some sort of signal that they are in a cult or maybe, just maybe, they are just Johnny Cash fans.

Thanks John. Happy Holidays to you too. On rare occasions I will have someone there shooting video, but usually it's just me.
great video, i love kitting out hardware!

Thank you so much! I think this was my first video
Thank you Mr. Gress, for that Fine Information!
My pleasure!
Great video! Thank you! It is a really helpful video! )))
Thank you!
Thank you. This is very helpful
You're welcome!
Excellent video showing and explaining. Information on these grip items. There are not too many videos on this topic for portrait photo.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks Wendy!

fantastic info!! thanks so much for covering a lot of additional cool ways to use the grip equip !!
Sure thing!
Great video. This is the stuff that we amateurs never learn about, though that assistants would probably learn about on day one!
Glad it was helpful! I could see that! I actually learned by watching a bunch of RUclips videos.
Wow! That is so much stuff, I am still a beginner, but the video was interesting.
Thanks! Just keep it in the back of your mind for whenever you encounter a problem that needs solving. =)
very helpfull again John! Thank you !
Do you plan to come in Paris, giving some workshop?
Merci Stephane! I would love to do that when the world opens back up. =)
Great video. I'm amped you've started making these. This is also perfect timing for when my family is asking what I want for Christmas.
Ha! Thank you so much! I hadn’t thought about that! There are links for them below 😁

This is just a different way to do it with less gear. To each his own.
thanks 🙏
Thanks for watching 😁
Great content
I have an avenger C stand
I have been going between Mathews and manfroto not sure where that is going yet

what if the grip arm doesnt have a permanent grip at the end? can you still use a baby pin and attach a strobe? any videos on how to do this?
I have never seen a grip arm that didn't have a grip head attached. You can place a baby pin in any grip head and then mount a strobe to it.

Thanks! I dropped the background music about six or so months ago, so you will probably prefer my newer content.

Or moonlighting as hair dressers! Thanks Cecil🙏🏼
What you call a "cucoloris" I know as a "gobo" (go between). I've never been very good at using them 🤦♂️
People here would probably call them a gobo too, but cucoloris is what you have to search for if you want to buy one.
