  • This week we look at the total oddity that is the "Buck Rogers Star Searcher" a repackaged Micronauts vehicle, we also look at some of the other proposed (but not produced) vehicles and playsets for this line. They may look familiar.

I had a couple Buck Rogers figures as a kid, and lots of Micronauts. Had no idea they rebranded Micronauts as Buck Rogers! Very interesting!

The Micronauts’ Astro Station was my stand-in Millennium Falcon for several years.. I’m sure Buck and Wilma would have found it useful too.

Holy crap, I loved Micronauts, and I loved Buck Rogers. Never knew about these proposed toys. I remember when Micronauts became the ‘interchangeables’

I never saw this in stores, but I would prolly have snatched it up recognizing it as Micronauts

For many of these lost toys the box art is really the gem. I think the art of illustration has been somewhat lost. People of our generation pine for it and I think that is why we collect some of the stuff we do.

I had the two ships, but never even saw this on store shelves in NJ. In 81 I was hardcore into 3 3/4. Without knowing, I was still getting Mego! Dukes of Hazzard, Star Trek TMP figures, Black Hole figures (those blasted thumbs), and Buck Roger's figures. My Draconian Guard had black goggles, not red as in the commercial. Good video, congrats on the acquisition!

Yes. The Maurauders here were featured in the comics. Presumably they were early designs for the film. The comic followed an earlier draft of the screenplay also. It had a few significant differences.

Thanks for confirming, it's weird that Mego used an off model source rather than their own toys.

Buck is conspiring with Acroyear 2 as he is clearly visible on the Star Shuttle viewscreen.
I wish all of these had been released. The buyers clearly didn't know the need kids had at the time for more playsets and areas to battle with our 3 3/4" figures.

I bet they'd all be hella rare now if they had been released.

Thank you for such a fascinating video. I've been a big Micronauts fan ever since I was a kid some 40 years ago, and was familiar with the Interchangeables. Lords of Light, etc. However I never knew that Mego did this with surplus Micronaut stock until I watched this today. I wish I'd know this around the time, as I could have "stocked up" myself on spare Micronaut toys easily, colour variations aside of course.

Hi, regards the identity of the Draconian fighter - I believe your supposition that its based on a comic book design is correct - a very similar, though IIRC grey, design appeared in “Buck Rogers” annuals in the UK. I’m not sure who the publisher was here, it may have been Fleetway or DC Thompson. This would have been about 1982 or so.

@@BrickMantooth glad you could confirm the source. I seem to recall from the annuals that they tended to explode very well... :-)

Looked on EBay and the Micronauts line had its own Star Searcher, but this became more of a terrestrial vehicle.

Man, did I play with that Star Blaster. I was a big fan of the Captain Future cartoon/anime as a kid, so that blaster was perfect to create new adventures around the house.

Had most of the Buck Rogers figures but none of the vehicles, but did have the other Micronauts vehicle that shared the same wheeled base as this,(it had a bulldozer and crane on it).

I remember that the Buck Rogers figures hands broke easier than the Acroyear's claws did,00 and the gaskets weren't as sturdy as the Micronauts were except for Twiki's (probably because Twiki had the smallest torso) that one was the sturdiest one of them all, I had 1 of each: Earth Defense Starfighter, & Draconian Marauder, Draco, Draconian in Armor, Buck, Twiki, and Wilma Deering. I like to look at toys now but not play with them the last time I enjoyed playing with toys was at least 3 decades ago (IDKW? IIWII {I don't know why? It Is What It Is.}) They are still fun to look at though. Thank You for the video and for reading this. HAPPY NEW DECADE! :)

Well, people ask big prices for this and it is hard to find but on the same token, a lot of people who collect Mego Buck Rogers have decided to not be a completist.

Great info, would you consider doing a video for EAGLE FORCE and your thoughts on the re-release of the 4in figures that are being sold now. EF was my favorite toy when i was a kid! I would appreciate it very much!!!!!!

Never seen most of these before. Where do u find this stuff??? Micronaughty!!!! Repackaged McRonaughts with Buck Rogers stickers. 3 Attack Spacecraps!!! Star Searcher deserves an M 80 up its exhaust port!!!! Do it, Film it!

I never heard of this thing, nor did I have the original Micronauts toy. But it looks cool in the way I loved most of the Micronauts toys when I was little. I definitely wouldn't have minded getting both the Draconian Base and the shuttle, because I HAD had both Stratos and Astro Stations, but by 1980, they had seen better days, and I'd lost a lot parts when my family had moved the year before, and I would have welcomed replacements in snazzy new colors. But since my parents never found the Starfighter or Draconian Marauder at retail, I doubt that they'd have found the Star Searcher. Ah, well.

    • @BrickMantooth

I have the sneaking suspicion that this wasn't easy to find at retail when it was new.

I really wish they released the buck Roger's figures like in the commercial where they were detailed with faces. Even as a kid I remember thinking theses were crap compared to Star Wars. And I was a big fan of Buck Roger's at the time.

holy crap! Micronauts (and Mego super heroes 8") are my two favorite lines of the 70s. I NEVER knew there even was a Star Defender. I had the Star Searcher, i think it is the name, it's similar to this, but smaller, and had less going for it.

I really don't mind mold reuse by toy companies but this is probably pushing it too far, this is like early Remco ST toys where license recognition breaks down.
