I have been thinking about starting a software dev agency focused in .NET software modernization. I am wondering if its too niche and I have no idea how to start. I dont know about contracts, who I market to, what to price things at, etc. I want to keep my full time job until things kick off too. Not sure if I should leverage my skillsets by hiring offshore developers to do 80% while I do the important 20% as far as the work goes.
Hey Kendrick - I think that's a great idea and I don't think it's too niche at all. I would call it nicely focused. Perhaps you could use web scrapers or something like BuiltWith to figure out what companies have built in .NET and then reach out to them about modernization? As for contracts, you can google "development agency contract" and find some free templates online - in the past I've just copied and pasted those rather than working with a lawyer on the contracts (this is not legal advice). If you think you can leverage offshore resources and get a good quality work product I'm a big fan of that - it will allow you to protect your time and margins as you grow. The hardest part is landing your first few customers, so I would say just go for it (while you still have your job) and keep charging at it until you have a few happy customers. You'll feel much more confident at that point and can make a decision re: going full time or not. Hope that helps!
