    I appreciate finding someone like you that legitimizes ukelele! It's not just for "over the rainbow" type stuff (which is great!) it's a serious instrument, with a lot of room for innovation.

    It sounds very simmilar if you do it like 0345 making it G Eb Ab D. It gives the same koto feeling with a related, but not equal (and easier overall) chord.

    What a fantastic sound! I learned that r.h. roll from playing Villa-Lobos' guitar etudes back in the day. In those unenlightened pre-Ukulele times I called it a "ten-string roll" :p

    Great video, love that sound and strum. The most unusual chord I've ever played would be G13#9. 4th fret on the 4th string, 5th fret on the 3rd string, 6th fret on the 2nd string, & 7th fret on the 1st string. The 2 half step clusters make for a crazy sound. Depending on context it is sometimes beautiful, others times it can be a little painful. It's like the anti-Dmaj7 chord. Cheers!

    If you have a low G string tuning like me, you can play the 13th fret g string, 12th fret c string, and then bar the 10th fret for the e and a string. Not quite the same inversion or sound, but similar. Plus, you can transpose this one!

    • @PaulRedfern

      My reasoning for Ab-5maj7 is that 'D' on the A string is in fact Ebb. If we start with the Ab on 8th fret C string and choose that as our root, that the puts our mystery chord in the key of Ab.
      Ab-C-Eb gives us the chord of Ab major & A-C-Eb-G that of Abmaj7. If now we flatten the 5th of this chord, we arrive at Ab-C-Ebb-G. aka Ab-5maj7, which 0885 voices.
      Of course, the note of Ebb is enharmonically the note of D, but the key of Ab already has a Db in it, and you can't use a note's name twice in a scale. So Ebb it is. :-)

    Mahalo, James. Very cool, really. Sure would have been appreciated if you would've elaborated a little about where this "thing" could possibly stand in a musical context (functional harmony). Now taking the open g as the root, the b9 and the perfect 4th strongly suggest a Gdom. chord to my ears.

    Thanks for the tutorial, James! I think John King used this chord in his Sakura arrangement. One question I got for you is this: when you say that "there's nothing on the ukulele fretboard quite like this" I wonder what makes you say that, because it is still possible to play this chord on low-G ukulele using 2-4-1-2 moveable shape, although playing the 7 string roll isn't possible (but still finger picking 3-2-4-1-4-2-3 fast enough has the same effect? Thanks again for the lesson, and really looking forward to learn more!

    Why do you play this over the sound hole and not the "sweet spot"?

    • @jameshillmusiq
      @jameshillmusiq  7 лет назад +5

      Good question! Playing over the sound hole gives a more strident / brittle sound that IMO is more like the sound of the koto.
