I know you're telling me how you play Billie Jean with some of these tips and techniques...BUT I STILL CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT. It blows me away at how awesome you are at applying this stuff, coming up with it, or just learning in the first place.
James...you are awesome with your clarity, in your instructions. I am just a beginner, with a lots of intrest in this instrument - you just furthered it. Thank you.
Lovely video James, thank you - I love your double up-strum at the end - not come across that one before! Your Ukulele Way lessons are really good - I signed up ages ago and do recommend!
Thanks for this course James, you teach things taking them to the next level which is exactly what I was looking for and couldn't find, so again, cheers👍🏻
Hey there James! I'm a musician of all sorts of instruments and found the Ukulele not too long ago. I can't put the darn thing down! I'm looking to advance my ability a LOT in this awesomely tiny and dangerous weapon. Digging your videos :)
Dear James, greetings from Saigon! Your videos on this topic are truly great! I am trying to find the same concept for guitar but am struggling to find similar guidance. I would be very grateful if you could shed some light on videos or books on this topic/subject for guitar as all there are appears to focus on Jazz chord melody only. Thank you!
+Quang Hien Au Thanks! Wish I could help re: guitar resources but I really don't know. I suggest asking my friend Gerald Ross who is both an excellent guitarist and uke player. geraldross.com
Whaa! This is so difficult (down upup..down upup) I need at least 15 minutes example to Get into that rhythme 😂 every time i thing i got it, you stop 🤪 love this ritme. Do you have more song with that strumming rhythme
+Zenfolio Zack Yes, you could use the double-up strum to do a triplet (i.e. where each beat is the same length) but in this case I'm using it to play a "long-short-short" rhythm.
James, let's say that from my head, rather than from musical notation, I'm playing the melody of a tune on my uke. How do I find/create the proper chords to accompany the melody, without going through a gazillion chords in a reference book? Many thanks!
I love your videos and have been learning a lot from them. I don't want to be a pain, but I do have an issue with you on this one. The third chord that you are playing does not appear to be a D7. It appears to be an F#dim. I have checked every chord chart (e.g. Brian's Huge Chordlist for ukulele) and reference app at my disposal (e.g. Guitar Toolkit set on ukulele) and keep getting the same answer. Am I missing something?
Thanks James - I really like your videos. Regarding the strum you show in the end. I picked it up somewhere to do this strum by doing two strokes with index finger like this: index down, thumb down, index up. The first strum can be any of these. Would you say that the strum you show in the video has different characteristics?
+joka2966 There are a few variations on this strum, each with a slightly different feel and sound. The one you mention is notable because there are no fingernails involved so you're always getting the mellower sound of the finger pads. The one I showed has a fingernail strike on the thumb upstroke which gives it a little more sparkle and a slight syncopated accent. Subtle differences but differences nonetheless!
On the double up technique, how is the clean division between the 2 'ups' accomplished at high speed? Is there some sort of other finger technique that's just too fast to see?
Loved the video....am trying to figure out the double up technique and it just isn’t happening...is there a secret? It sounded so awesome when you played it, but can’t seem to get anywhere near correct.
Hi James..when I speed up the strum, in the up stroke the index finger follows the thumb on every string..it doesn't happen that the thumb completes all four strings and then the finger starts the up strum. Is that how it is done? not sure if I was able to explain my question
Hey James, i recently (3 weeks ago) borrowed a ukulele from my friend, and i recently picked up my own proper one and i have fallen completely and madly in love with the instrument. I have picked up about 5 songs and learned them and im currently trying to get the hang of fingerpicking, so i was just wondering if you had 1 tip for a "semi new" player to improve, what would it be? Love your vids, exceptional quality and presentation

Had the same question once :). James answered: "That uke is one of James' all-time favourites: a lovely custom tenor by the amazing Mike DaSilva: www.ukemaker.com :) "
You have blown my mind. Been wanting to take my ukulele play to the next level. These things I can do. Thank you
I know you're telling me how you play Billie Jean with some of these tips and techniques...BUT I STILL CAN'T FIGURE IT OUT. It blows me away at how awesome you are at applying this stuff, coming up with it, or just learning in the first place.

A cartoony running horse popped in my head when you played "Double Up" strum. That's cool~
+Geniedd :)
+Geniedd After wanting for years to play the uke I came across Arthurs Uke Blog and it seems to be the best home study course (check it out on google)
Jini Do It popped up in my head too 😂
Wow, I did it! Except for the last strumming magic thing you did. Baby steps for me. Feels so good! Thank you lots!!!
Loved this course James. And my eyes got 'bigger' at the final challenge strum :) thanks so much. You're a great teacher.

Lovely video James, thank you - I love your double up-strum at the end - not come across that one before! Your Ukulele Way lessons are really good - I signed up ages ago and do recommend!
+songandancedaisy Thanks! Glad you're enjoying The Ukulele Way!
If you play Cabbages by strumming down and then plucking the highest string, then strumming back up, it makes a really nice sound
Thanks for this course James, you teach things taking them to the next level which is exactly what I was looking for and couldn't find, so again, cheers👍🏻
+ukulelethings Glad to hear it, thanks!
I Loved these two lessons - as a beginner - and can allready play this...

You are an amazing teacher. Congrats from Brazil.

This is an awesome lesson, thx. Do you happen to have the music on the song you started part 1 with. I immediately fell in love with!
Hi james love your lesson. Keep up the good work. Can you give a lesson on cherry picking.
+Kazi Nur Thanks for the request, Kazi!
Thank you so much that was very nice lesson but last part was a little too advanced for me!!!

Pretty cool, dude!

Thanx.... Liked..... Very good jozzzzzz pokoke
What is the last note or cord he is playing, I can only tell is 7th freet.
Whaa! This is so difficult (down upup..down upup) I need at least 15 minutes example to Get into that rhythme 😂 every time i thing i got it, you stop 🤪 love this ritme. Do you have more song with that strumming rhythme
Fantastic tutorial! I'm just wondering how you accurately pick out the melody note of each chord in other modern songs?
Excellent video, thanks.
So the double up strum is a different way to do the "Triplet" with more nails?
+Zenfolio Zack Yes, you could use the double-up strum to do a triplet (i.e. where each beat is the same length) but in this case I'm using it to play a "long-short-short" rhythm.
+James Hill Awesome thanks for clarifying. I'm a uke newb.

Reminds me of 'Brown-eyed Girl' by Van Morrison.
I have heard that strumming technique called a three finger roll xx
On the double up technique, how is the clean division between the 2 'ups' accomplished at high speed? Is there some sort of other finger technique that's just too fast to see?
You look great!! what camera was used?! :)
Loved the video....am trying to figure out the double up technique and it just isn’t happening...is there a secret? It sounded so awesome when you played it, but can’t seem to get anywhere near correct.

9:46 “Double up strum”
how do you the up stooke
When we are playing the lat G chord, would it be correct to just not press the last string??
I think no. Cause it will still create a sound. The goal is to mute it so the last melody will be heard.
Hey James, i recently (3 weeks ago) borrowed a ukulele from my friend, and i recently picked up my own proper one and i have fallen completely and madly in love with the instrument. +søren Frederiksen Thanks, Søren. One tip for the semi-new player? Find other musicians to play with; it's the best (and most enjoyable) way to learn!
Can someone tell me the ending chord??!!
It's a G chord played 0-7-7-10. Enjoy!
@@jameshillmusiq Thank you!!!
Hi James, I don't see a link to the sheet music for this one. Could you please post it? Thanks!
+Nancy Harrison Sorry, forgot the link. It's there now and here it is for good measure: www.theukuleleway.com/cabbage

Had the same question once :). James answered: "That uke is one of James' all-time favourites: a lovely custom tenor by the amazing Mike DaSilva: www.ukemaker.com :) "
Hi is that really a D7 chord ..confused here
Yep, it's your old friend D7... just a "rootless" voicing.

The D7 chord is an Hawaiian D7 .
