  • DIY. Learn how to convert your florescent kitchen under cabinet lighting to LED lighting. No more ballast replacements. LED Light bulbs last for years.
I created a video from beginning to end hopefully explaining and showing you the entire procedure in one sitting. Of course I would like to do a different video to clean up some mistakes but keeping it real I just went with this.
Anyone with the very most basic electrical knowledge can do this one day project. Even if your light fixture differs slightly, the concept is the same.
Just remove all ballast and cut wires as close to the ballast as possible.
From the incoming power source you should have 3 wires. (Black (Hot) white (Neutral)and green (Ground) in most cases)
One end of the light fixture will need to be connected to hot(usually black wire) the other side needs to be connected to Neutral (Normally white in color), Keep ground (Green Wire) connected. You do not need to modify this wire.
Next attach one side of the light (grouping both wires regardless of color) together and connecting them to either the White or black wire.
Do the same with the opposite side of the light fixture but this time connecting the wires to the White or black wire that you have left. If you used the white on the one side then you use the black on the other. Then your done. Very simple and easy to do.
I am no pro. I just like to do things myself. I am far from even being average but hopefully this video provides you with some courage to not be afraid to take on a project like this yourself.
Total cost per light will be about $9.00 to $10.00 (Amazon)
I ended up installing 13 lights. It cost me about $130.00 to retrofit my entire kitchen. The more lights you do the quicker you get at replacing them. Turns into a 10 minute job once you get the hang of it. Each light with some/most fixtures having double lights.

A lot of A-Hole comments on here. This worked perfectly for me. REALLY cheap/easy. An NO, going out an buying a new LED fixture is NOT cheaper...especially for an entire kitchen.

Cool! I did my garage lights like this, and I have been considering doing my kitchen lights (same problem, some ballasts are out). However, I did not realize that they also made smaller LED sticks. I will have to see if they have the sizes that I need. Up until now, I had been thinking of completely replacing the fixtures.

Basically, he eliminated the ballast, rewired the hot and neutral wires where needed, then replaced the bulbs with led bulbs. Not too difficult, but you do need to be careful that everything is connected correctly. Good video…except for bypassing the simple act of turning off the correct breaker switch. I’ve seen many electricians do that. It’s not very professional. Their just trying to save a little time.

Darrin - great video. I have several lights connected together and each has an on/off toggle switch (mostly in the 'on' position as they're also connected to a light switch for power); do you have any advice for how to wire the switch (i.e. is there a hot/neutral wire?) I tried wiring to a hot/neutral but the wiring I did tripped the breaker the lights were on. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

      Sorry for the late reply.
1st off I am not an electrician but I have played with electrical for some time but I would recommend as long as you have a hot, nutural, and a ground that's all you need. You do not need to go through all of the switches on the lights you just bypass the switches. Except for your main.
To be honest it's difficult to answer your question without seeing what you have but there are some other videos on RUclips that might be able to help you from professionals. I apologize I can't help you but If you want to disable the switches that should be very simple to do. You just don't connect to the switchs, just continue the wires to the light bulbs.

Darin, I just removed the ballast from the end light under my cabinets. When I turned the switch on they came on for a second, the rest of the old lights also turned on and stayed on. Try a few times turning the bulbs, tightening the wires etc but no success. Maybe the light bulb I bought are not the correct ones? Do you need a specific led bulg when removing the ballast? Any thoughts?
    Thank for your help.

WOW you are sooo lucky you didn't fry yourself. You are working with a hot circuit and are not experienced unless the light, that is on to your right, is off. It looks to be on. That is a cocktail for disaster. You have two exposed wire right in front of you and you are grabbing them without paying attention.

FFS... Ask any *real* electrician how many times they've worked on live circuits. Some times you just don't have a choice, and some times the choice is made for expediency.
The negative comments are from White Knights and Net Nannies who don't know how to do DIY projects themselves *but* have plenty of sage advice for everyone else that *actually* do things, build things, fix things... instead of just *talk* about them.
For RUclips, most people will cut power, wear goggles, and other PPE but in real life, most of those same people won't bother. They're more worried about getting dinged by RUclips.
He's a full grown adult and therefore, can make decisions as to his own safety.

True but if you want to save $30-$40 bucks per fixture (Example 5 fixtures x $40 = $200) you can do what I did. 5 fixtures will cost you about $30.00 total. Super easy to do also. Both options work. Sometimes it's fun to modify vs buying new too.

I mean, good intentions and you know what your doing but still didn't follow your advice to turn off the breaker. Hate to be the safety police but that seems irresponsible. People are willing to try something for the first with some of these youtube videos. You gotta remember to show each and every important step. Turn off the breaker and then measure the hot and neutral to ensure it was the right breaker.

I get you but I'm not a pro electrician or Video guy. Just a handy homeowner. I dont have the proper equipment or want to purchase external lighting to shoot a video. I needed the lights on in order to shoot the video or it would be dark. People would not see anything and i wouldn't post a poor video. I do get you but the job can be done with the power on. The main reason for the power to be off if to protect the person that is not that familiar or comfortable around electrical. They should always turn off the breaker. Its a call I made. I would always tell people to turn off the power especially if you are a homeowner trying to save money and doing it themselves without professional help.
I'm just trying to save people money and show them how easy it is. I just didn't have proper video lighting and took a chance but I am also confident enough in working with electrical live from time to time. But that is just me.
