@FightingTheOdds that's not quite how it happened. after he stepped down from the tonight show, he immediately came back with the Jay Leno show and it wasn't received very well. NBC then changed it from an hour to 30 minutes, and put it in Leno's old timeslot with the tonight show @ 1135 pushing the tonight show which Conan now hosted to 1205. between the poor performance of the jay leno show leading into the tonight show, and the push to a later time slot, conan decided to leave and jay reclaimed the tonight show. he's the fucking worst.
@@latinjeditrix Conan himself did say that he turned down the offer to do the 12:05 AM show because 'it's not the tonight show, it's the today show', but I always thought that he either quit by himself or he got fired.
Conan o Brien is a terrible interview. But he was better skit ideas like the gasoeous weeny and that long running walker Texas ranger joke. And the dirty dancing gag. Where Conan hyped up the fact that it was getting a release on vhs and then said it was terrible. Oh and triumph the insult comic dog. And the impressions. His humor did not appeal to middle American. Which was why Carson was king and lettermsn would have been a disaster
That's very true. Before his "return," I always thought of him as a comedian for boomers-- like, someone I didn't personally think was funny but realized that my parents' generation probably enjoyed. Now I just think of him as that gremlin-faced rat bastard that fucked over Conan.
maybe i'm out of league but watching old Carson reels just doesn't do it for me. I guess those were different times. But Conan on the other hand definitely makes my #1 comic list.
NBC's loss. Conan is hilarious, genuine, and has a bunch of different stuff he does. Maybe it's because I didn't watch talk shows when I was a kid (31 now) but Letterman and Leno always seemed so...dull when I happened to watch them. The other hosts nowadays...Fallon, Kimmel, and Colbert all push their political agendas, and overall just seem really stuffy. Guess it's because Conan is a comedian, so he's more entertaining. The videos he does with all his staffers, traveling around the world, clueless gamer, etc adds so much more to his show than anything the other hosts are doing.
The thing about Conan to me that always stood out was (in my opinion) how awesome he was as a host. In terms of actual "stand up routines", I've always ranked Jay, Letterman and Conan around the same. But Conan is head and shoulders a superior talk shot host to either.
***** I don't really care much for Fallon's acting or "stand up" comedy, but he's a pretty good talk show host. Probably better than Leno and Letterman.
"Conan blew it", some of you say? No he didn't. He's an acquired taste, he needs time to settle into a gig, NBC forgot that and pulled the plug way too early. His sense of self-deprecation, absurd and nonsense, his ability to save any joke by playing on the audience's reaction, the show's ridiculously random characters... All that just works. It really does. Also, Conan is funniest when things go wrong, which explains why his best Tonight Show episodes were the last. Fallon is not nearly as talented, but his sense of humour is much more "classic", making him the logical choice for The Tonight Show. He's not bad, but... It's just too topical, too celeb-oriented, too... controlled. "Let's make a parody of the Olympics or whatever, but with Will Ferrel, that'll be funny", and it often is, but it's also a bit stale. I guess his SNL days just stuck with him. The show lacks a robot on the toilet, a bigoted singer ghost, or a masturbating bear. The touch of absurd that is Conan's trademark. Leno was about as funny as a fire in an orphanage, but he attracted the "safe", older demographic. He couldn't save a bad joke, and his monologues were actually painful to watch sometimes, from all those half laughing, half awkward silence reactions which he just couldn't be bothered to do anything about. I'm sure he once was a really good comedian, but he had settled into this show like in a pair of old slippers, and it had become just that, boring, gray, but surprisingly comfortable. I'm glad he's gone, just wish Conan would have been given a chance. By now, he'd have the best ratings on TV.
conan does sketches that on paper might sound boring like an interview with the staff picking apples from a tree with mr t but it just works really well and its really funny
I’m pretty sure the general consensus is that Leno is an asshole not that he blew it, Conan just didn’t want to deal with all the bs and moved on with his life.

bob dingle A few years ago Conan was given the Late Show (which Leno had for close to 20 years). Leno was given a new show that started before the Late Show. The show Leno was given was getting terrible ratings and they didn't give Conan enough time to let the people warm up to him (it was less than a year I think). Leno claims that NBC said they were going to move Conan to get Leno back into his old show because Leno was a proven ratings draw. Most everyone else recognized that Leno loved his old late show spot and would most likely fight to take it back if an offer was given. So it's commonly accepted that Leno jumped at the chance to get his show back at the cost of Conan's NBC career. I believe it's still not known if Leno was the one to actually insist on taking his show back or if it was NBC. In either case, Leno took the show back. Conan was on contract and they breached it by moving him from the show, so he took a pile of money (instead of moving to his old timeslot which was after the Late Show) and left NBC. A year later (something like that) Conan started a new show on another network (that didn't have any late shows). It turned out good for Conan but up until everything came together, it was a disaster.
Leno just did what the MSNBC guys told him to do, he didn't really do anything wrong, other than not refuse an offer that gave him a half hour show at 11:35 and moved the time slot of Conan's Tonight Show from 11:35 to 12:05 (he used to have a show at 12:35). Remember, Conan wasn't fired, he resigned because he didn't like the idea of the Tonight show starting a half hour later, that's what happened. I mean Jay Leno could've just as easily gone to a different network and start a competing late show in the same time slot or something, and taken someone else's job, but he wanted to stay on MSNBC for some reason. I don't like Jay Leno, I actually like Conan much more, I just don't understand why it was such a big deal.
@@ReddoFreddo because he said he was ready to move on but was more than happy to take the show back. Who does that? And he didn't need to necessarily take someone's job on another network. Letterman didn't.
