  • How to haul big rocks, out in the woods, off the grid.
    So, we needed a few rocks to complete landscaping and access to & around the gazebo, sauna, bath house combo building.
    The flat rocks were sitting on the beach, begging to be hauled up and assembled in to something useful, in human terms. No rocks were harmed in this process. No cement or mortar was used to hold the rocks in place - only natural placement and the weight of the stones were employed during this exercise. It was wonderful to use only human power and natural materials to form our human environment. When we are long gone (and generations that succeed us) these materials will return to threir native place,

    Just pry the stone up with some kind of lever - a 2X4 or large crow bar - and slip the log rollers underneath. Sorry I didn't make that clear.
    Thanks for watching!

    I built an 185' stone henge fence in 1 week. boulders averaging 400lbs. I used a 4' round pry bar with pointy tips. There is a superb dolly for moving rocks over terrain called JobSmart Boss Hoss from Tractor Supply. 15" wheels, zerk fittings, bearings, 3/4 axle 62" tall. much bigger then other dollies. I paid $111 with tax.
    This fence enclosure was filled with mulch for 10 fruit trees. It will last for millennia and I now have plenty of benches to sit on. The fence is endlessly changing as light hits it. No man made fence can remotely compare. it also preserves ground moisture. Aesthetically stunning and I have improved value of property probably 10k.
    I moved rocks up to about 650lbs averaging 250' each, up to 600' with that dolly, by myself. (With 2 people, thjob is vastly easier.)

    It would be more work without the winch & pulleys. on the other hand, I'm glad we're not building a pyramid or Machu Picchu :-)

      A rock here and there is not an issue when I checked with Federal Fisheries. However, wholesale modification of a beach is a whole other issue - definitely not what I'm doing here.

    Hey markerbuoy, (try to get Apple to spell that one) I have fallen in love with your winch and can’t find anything even remotely similar. How heavy do you think those rocks are? I can get a 13,000 pound rated winch, do you think that would move rocks of that size? Thanks. You’re the bomb.

    • @markerbuoy
      @markerbuoy  5 лет назад

      Ha, a 13,000 pounder should move a mountain. If you have sufficient pulley reduction, you could even haul rocks like this by hand. It's not the size that counts, it's how you use it :-) I used that winch, as it was given to me by a neighbour. In recent years I have had a lot of use out of this little portable unit www.portablewinch.com/ca_en/winches/gas-winches/pcw5000/. Thanks for watching & reaching out!

    Interesting video. I think your single block attached to the stone gives you no mechanical advantage.It merely returns the rope to the winch. Imagine the setup as vertical and your rock weighed a hundred pounds , it would take a one hundred pound force to lift.Google pulleys. your winch is doing all the work.

    • @markerbuoy
      @markerbuoy  10 лет назад

      So good job I had a decent winch!
      You're quite right - thanks for watching & pointing that out :-)

      I don't agree.
      A pulley at the rock will halve the effort and every foot the cable is pulled, the rock will only move 1/2 a foot.

    • @markerbuoy
      @markerbuoy  10 лет назад

      George Gibson Hi George. Thanks for chiming in :-) Mechanical advantage or not, the rocks are off the beach & they're not going back! Thanks again for the sub...
      Best regards,
      M

    • @pappasierra
      @pappasierra 9 лет назад

      Well you're wrong, Roman. It halved the effort.
      Imagine the set-up as vertical and your rock weighing a hundred pounds, with the pulley mounted on the weight beneath and the wires' end returning to the point of force (winch) above. As the wire is doubled at the point of weight by the pulley, the wire must be reeled in 2 feet for each foot the weight is moved. This is a 2:1 ratio, this therefore halves the force required to lift the weight, you would only require 50lbs of force to lift the rock.
      For your assumption to be correct, the pulley would have been mounted above (stationary) and both the weight and force beneath.

      Ha, the debate continues...
      The fact is, it's a very large rock which used to sit on the beach. Now that rock has been "retrieved" an is re-purposed as part of my landscape. Love it :-)

    What the heo you stole rocks and boulders from public beach? The rocks sitting on the beach does not mean that you could haul to your house and build thing. SMH

      Long ago, I informed the local authorities of my work, after protests from some neighbors.
      Officially, there is no problem; only in the mind of some individuals.
      Thank-you for your concern.
