Your frustration is understandable. Again, it goes back to the union and previous contracts. Back when we had TE’s before new hires were CCA’s, TE’s were starting at $23/hr then in contract negotiations they cut the pay $6/hr to $17/hr. What other job does this, especially one with union representation. A few of my co-workers who lost that $6/hr left the union because of this. When I started as a PTF in 2001 my hourly rate was around $13/hr and I was considered career. Now 23 years later new hires are making a few dollars more and are not considered career. Definitely not in line with the cost of living over the last 23 years. That’s why employee retention is so horrible.
This is what new carriers don’t understand. These tables were created across-the-board on all union contracts. It was the Post Office that created these tables so they could save money. The only way to get rid of these tables are to have a stronger representation by the people we elect.
Im gonna be at 10 years before i get to table 1 step A. I love my job, but if it don't improve significantly I'll have no choice to find something better.
Spot on brother. 7yrs in making about 56 the past few years working Hella OT in hot ass texas. The wife and I are grateful for the career I have at the P.O. yet she's 38, sick and can't work. I struggle to just feed them. When the wife went down during covid we lost the house and 2 card. Took a major financial hit. Living in a tight trailer with a very used '99 van 😢. Doordash nightly at least 2 hours after overtime to make ends meet. The P.O. used to be a bastion of financial safety for the American family and I was once proud to do my job to completion daily. Had the opportunity to work for the brown during covid and wish I'd taken it but couldn't and still can't afford to start at the bottom. The union NEEDS to catch up with the competition pay wise. The struggle is real. Yet the government says I make too much for food stamps. This country is off man
My brother in law after one year made 50k more then me and had more time off at a steel mill obviously that’s a job you can be laid off from but his union fights for them to get paid
100% spot on.. I know a lot of the senior carriers in our office (all on table 1 pay OFC) talk about "well keep in mind how great our insurance and benefits package is." Which sure, it is... but I can't pay my mortgage and bills with health insurance. I've been going deeper and deeper into credit card debt just trying to stay afloat. What does a Usps letter carrier earn at the beginning? I've been working for Deutsche Post since 1997 and earn 4050 euros a month for 38.5 hours, with new employees earning a maximum of 3400 euros. And we still get a double Christmas bonus plus a 300 euro vacation bonus in July
If I calculated correctly you need about 18 hours of OT a pay period to make what a senior carrier makes. I don’t agree with the 2 tier pay scale and the second pay scale should be dropped. With that said, and not to make excuses for the NALC and USPS, but they don’t take into consider what part of the country we live in. And this is an important factor. The Median salary in Alabama is $37,000.00 a year while the median salary in Massachusetts is $60,000.00. If I am understanding your accent correctly I think you live in Massachusetts maybe in or around Boston which contributes to money issues. Me personally I think high cost of living states like California, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts should receive a territorial COLA. So in other words, all carriers at top pay earn $75,299.00 and if you live in the aforementioned states which can be expanded would get, let’s say, a 10% territorial COLA. And by the way, there are territorial COLAS given to USPS employees who live in Alaska and Hawaii. But the carriers who live in the south and mid-west would never vote in favor of same.
We don’t need to divide the pay even more between carriers fight to have higher pay all around to love very well in some and well in others. We’re already divided enough as it is with a two tier table
