    another problem with lift kits and larger tires is larger tires will essentially change your differential ratio meaning your engine will need to work harder to tow the same weight. of course you can change your ring and pinion to and if you do tow with a lift probably recommended

      Rear diff's are very important... one caveat to changing your rear diff is also using tire sizes. I have a 95 6.5 with 4.10s which is great for towing but the bad part is it tops out at like 60-63 mph. Once these tires wear out I will be getting slightly bigger tires than stock to help more with top end. I agree though because I also have a lifted s10 with 33's and 3.73s in the rear and its quite horrible.

    Hello could you possibly do a video on 5th wheel to Gooseneck adapters? Especially how they tow compared to 5th wheel vs Gooseneck vs travel trailer. The only advantage that comes to my mind is if you have a Titan xd and a lightweight 5th wheel, converting the hitch so you could use the factory gn. Thanks

    The truck I bought earlier this year is a 07 f250 cc fx4. It has a turn over ball gooseneck hitch. It also has a 4in superlift on it and 37's. Has bilstein shocks. Looks to me like the previous owner towed with the truck quite a bit. I haven't towed with it yet. Only thing I dont like is the 37's, plan to go to 35's.

    I suppose people lift trucks to add larger wheels and tires, which are heavier with more mass to stop. Assuming most people won't spend the money for better performing calipers/pistons, that have much better stopping effectiveness over the OEM brakes, wouldn't braking performance and safety be a major concern? Meaning your safe maximum towing capacity would be reduced, too, over what your truck was designed, calculated/engineered to tow with the stock wheels/tires.

  • @robgrune3284
    @robgrune3284 7 лет назад +3

    On highways, I would never tow in 4wd mode, and never with a lifted rig. It's a recipe for trouble. I prefer 2wd for towing on highways: easier steering under load. But for off road at very low speed, maybe: but only with a fully articulating hitch [not the usual ball hitch].

    • @isaachousley325
      @isaachousley325 7 лет назад

      Rob Grune most 4wd systems are not designed to run full time. The hard steering while in 4wd drive is due to drive shaft bind caused by there not being a mid differential. On some of the newer higher trim trucks, they are offering 4wd systems that have an awd position that utilizes a mid differential that allow you to run 4wd all time.

  • @chevyon37s
    @chevyon37s 7 лет назад

    The reason you usually see lifted trucks squatted when towing more so than a stock truck is not so much the springs but more so is that most kits lift the front so that its level with the rear instead of the front having rake and sitting a few inches lower in the front like they come from the factory, then leveling out with a trailer. Most of the problems you're talking about can easily be combated with a proper lift kit (which also address driveline angles, and corrects them), traction bars, and tire/ wheel choice. Having towed with my truck on 37in tires, regeared (4.88's), traction bars, 9in of lift, Cognito front end parts, and drop hitch and had zero trouble towing whatever i've needed to tow. But like you said if the only use of the truck is to tow, anything more than a leveling kit is ignorant.

  • @rockycadieux4642
    @rockycadieux4642 7 лет назад

    My buddy thought he was getting better MPG with bigger tires, and then remembered that he needed to adjust his speedometer, which effected his odometer. I have also herd in rare cases that bigger tires do improve mileage, I suspect because the gear ratio was really low to start with.

    Excellent video and advice! I think the advice would probably be the same, but would you mind doing a video about using a lifted truck and using it with a snow-plow setup? I've seen a lot of advice that has clearly been pulled out of people's butts, and it's irritating when you're trying to find legitimate work arounds, or if it's even possible.

    The lower the center of gravity and thus the truck the better. I am fining a two wheel drive 3500 working well with my 5th wheel. Also since the rear suspension pickup points are the same duel rear wheels do not help stability on payload capacity.

    I just bought a 2015 ram sport quad cab and I love it. My Delma is that two months later we decided to buy a travel trailer as we are both retired now and want to go back east to Ontario and around Alberta to get in some camping and just general traveling. My trailer is 33' long and is 6740 lbs. dry weight and the truck says that with the 5.7 hemi it can tow a max of 10,640lbs. That being said I have been a truck driver in the oil patch for 35 yrs and I am not sure about this set up and whether or not the towing numbers that the truck state are legit. I do know I should have bought a 2500 at the least for the size of trailer but the trailer was an after thought and a deal to hard to turn down.
    I'm wondering could this work given the truck being driven by a conscientious and somewhat intelligent ex-truck driver lol. I know that buying this trailer doesn't exactly support the claim of intelligence, either way I would welcome some constructive criticism and your take on this. Thank you.

    • @robgraff764

      Darren, it sounds like your setup will be fine, especially if you have a weight distribution hitch. Run the travel trailer across the scales once it is loaded, my bet it will be well below 9,000 lbs. which gives you plenty of capacity to spare.

    Yup you have to watch out for those "Netto" tires. I'm just curious how the nose of the trailer being up a couple of inches makes the tongue weight go from 20% to 10%???

    • @BigTruckBigRV
      @BigTruckBigRV  7 лет назад

      smcox1991: Think of it this way. The trailer tires act as the pivot point for the trailers balance. If you tilt the trailer back, the leverage as well as balance is thrown off considerably.

    • @smcox1991
      @smcox1991 7 лет назад

      Not really. If your axles were perfectly in the center with equal amounts of weight in front of and behind the axles then maybe but that's not how they're setup. The only way to change the weight that much is you would physically have to put weight on the back of the trailer. I'm not saying pulling with a lifted truck is the best but pulling with a 6" lifted truck isn't going to kill you. As far as the tire flex in the sidewall with a lifted truck it only changes if you keep your 18" wheel and put a 35'" tire, but if you put a 22" wheel with a 35" tire the aspect ratio stays the same as stock. Plus you could put a 12.5"+ wide tire that will give you a better footprint on the ground than a stock truck. IMO towing with a lifted truck can be done just as safe if not safer than a stock truck.

    • @southjerseysound7340
      @southjerseysound7340 6 лет назад

      Air bags are key to towing lowered since you have less suspension travel.But a lot of what he says about leaf springs applies to lowered trucks too.If using a flip kit or shackles on stock leafs you'll be near stock towing minus the travel.Wheres a drop spring takes capacity away but that can be compensated for with bags.The other thing to watch is load capacity on your tires.Its easy to overload them.Other than that lowered trucks tow very nice but can be stiff although I did 300k miles hauling boats(25-35+ft and some oversize) with a lowered dually no problem with nothing more than helper air bags.

      @@paulvivier1984 yes. It will not be level and short drives ok. was told to raise rig and thats not gonna happen. I have seen fords with leveling kit with 37s pulling em. But that will be max...

    what about buying a truck to tow it do I want it to have 4 wheel drive or no because I would like my truck to have 4-wheel drive

    • @BigTruckBigRV
      @BigTruckBigRV  7 лет назад

      judd maisel: I always suggest 4wd simply because of being over prepared. The biggest financial reason to buy a 4wd is simply the resale value. Yes, you will have more components that could possible fail, but unlikely as long as the truck isn't being drive too hard. 4WD is the way to go....just try not to tow IN 4wd (if avoidable).

      Big Truck Big RV Or use 4wd in situations that you don't need to. As a mechanic I see some stupid stuff. I can't tell you how many people have their trucks in 4wd in the middle of summer.

      judd maisel Personally I wouldn't buy a truck without 4wd. Even if you only engage it occasionally to get yourself out of a muddy camp site it's well worth it. Also the low range gearing can be handy even in cases where you don't strictly need 4wd.

    • @TheJared1445
      @TheJared1445 7 лет назад

      judd maisel 4wd is nice it does help resale value. But I tend to shy away from 4wd with a manual tranny because they like to spin tires. I can get in more places in a 2WD Auto with proper tires, because I can put it in a low gear and have it crawl. I'm just not coordinated enough to go off-roading in a manual. Also as they mentioned try not to tow in 4wd. If you can't pull the load in 2wd then don't put it in 4wd because it could damage your truck. Those are just my two cents

    Errgh! I heard the line ". . . from a physics perspective . . ." and nothing addressing lift blocks the complete perspective. A taller block increases torsional load on the spring, yes, inducing axle-wrap, a LOT. BUT, it is increased in EVERY direction in a horizontal plane. A panhard bar, or watts link, does control lateral motion. But the increased loads when you add the stress and strain of a trailer, towed in any manner, may cause enough strain to fatigue the leaf to the point of failure when used in conjunction with a large lift block. This usually occurs either at the spot where the block is bolted to the spring, or the spring eye at either end. Doubling the distance between the axle and the spring, by use of a lift block, effectively DOUBLES the force the unsprung weight applies to that spring. Add-a-leafs may increase the strength at the center, but the eyes are the same, and, in fact, are more susceptible to bend/fatigue/breakage due to the decreased twist in the center from the add-a-leaf. Because of this, I would have to say that if you are lifting a leaf spring suspension, and are towing, the best bet is actually use the smallest block, or NONE AT ALL, and have custom leaf springs built by a company like Deaver Springs. You can have a leaf spring built for your towing needs, then, and be extremely safe. In fact, you can many times have a double, "military wrapped" spring eyes, too.
    Additionally, there was no mention of FMVSS126. Those standards should also be considered.

    I would never lift a truck, all these street queens, afraid to let a spec of mud to touch their truck! bunch of panzies man, making us truck guys look bad. they don't use their truck for work, they use it to get there. dammit. my truck still has the stock stance. its just leveled with some nice all terrains. all the power is there and I don't have to tear my ball sack getting in and out

    Does the NTHSB have data that supports your opinion on towing with a lifted truck? I see a lot of comments about how unsafe it is tow while lifted but wheres the data to support these theories? I would say the majority of these comments are from people who have never towed with a lifted set-up. Id rather see a lift truck towing within its limited than an non-lifted set up towing far above the recommended weight. I also don't buy the larger tire sidewall flex causes pronounced sway theory. once again opinion, no facts.

    Its a matter of what is the main function for the truck. Its good to have a work truck, a towing truck and a mall crawler truck! 3 Trucks, Problem solved.

    Lifted trucks have a higher center of gravity and are less capable to control a towed trailer.

      Brian Fyfe: You're very welcome. Hope you enjoyed commenting on a channel you think is annoying. Please feel free to visit any of my other videos as they appear in your "suggested" video list every morning....regardless of unsubscribing...because secretly you know you enjoy watching them and you know deep down that if you tell ME that I'm biased, you are actually saying YOU are biased because you can't see past the brand you support AND clearly you don't watch many of my videos, which clearly show how unbiased I am. Again, have a great day sir.
