This video is almost 2 years old and I see that you are still answering questions today! Thanks! I'm impressed and happy. I subscribed just because of that!
Hi, I just wanted to tell you that your mom is awesome! The rye flour made a HUGE difference in my starter!! Moms are the best and thank you for doing your RUclips channel. I always look forward to your videos.
My mother made the most wonderful sour dough pancakes, perfect golden and rarely as blemish spot on them. She would butter them all as they came off the griddle and any leftovers went into the bread drawer. We would slip by in the afternoon and get one, nothing else needed they were great cold without anything else added!
I really love that you described the process as "having a relationship" with the starter! That's so beautiful and really makes sense being that it is a live culture! So neat! Thanks for making this video! You also make it seem MUCH more approachable.
Haha, yes, I love being in a relationship with my starter 😜. After all, these cultures are alive! I am so glad you like my method and thank you for your nice comment 💛 ~ Anja
I really love your “Low Maintenance” approach to sourdough! ALSO- the “relationship” that you refer to - I am working on Day 3 of my starter and things are ‘bubbling’ right along. I had read in another article that putting the starter in the oven with JUST THE LIGHT on would move things along. BOY and HOWDY did it! I had a thermometer in the oven with the starter-with the stater away from the light and closer to the door. Temp= 86 degrees! I only did this to get it started. AND-happy, happy yeasts! Coasting on the counter last night and this morning in my 68 degree kitchen-yeah, my husband likes a cool/cold house. Thanks for your wonderful, carefree demeanor that makes watching so pleasant. It’s just like I’m in the kitchen having a cup of coffee with you! I look forward to more of your videos.
@@OurGabledHome hi thank you for creating this video. I want to attempt your method and I think I will have many questions as I go along but for now can I use my Greek yogurt and thin it down as a substitute for buttermilk pls?
@@judyeaton3857 For this particular video, I used store-bought buttermilk but I have since then published a video on how you can make your own: ruclips.net/video/5fJfpftr9GA/видео.html Hope this helps 💛 ~ Anja
@@OurGabledHome to the contrary. I see you as ANYTHING but “stiff!” You are a natural for sharing your generational wisdom, and we....the benefactors are grateful! 🙋🏼♀️👩🏽🍳🥰
Anja, I know you aren't keen on this video but really it is your best one on this topic. It covers all the details. I've started another sourdough batch for this winter. I was not good at keeping the one I made last fall using your method. I had some unreliable refrigeration problems. I have a nice start on the new one! I look forward to freezing a little and drying some as one of your new videos demonstrates so I don't start from scratch again. Tho I must say the day I mixed this new one using rye, einkhorn, my own well water, and home made kefir and caraway of course! Then I carried it all around my land with the cheesecloth cover and introduced it to all my trees, the garden, the creek, the lavender crop... it was fun and I shook the natural pollen of each as we went along. This older series shows the day by day and how to know when it's ready. This starter is bubbling at the surface but not rising much yet in the jar after just 4 days. Thank you for sharing your experience!
@user, I 100% agree w/this video as being the best. I think every question I had was answered in this particular video. I liked at the end when Anja said something to the fact that she wasn’t used to anyone watching her w/the daily progress. Then day 6, I believe, she was elated when she was rewarded w/bubbles! Such a sweet spirit! So happy I found her and I give the credit to Lisa w/Farmhouse on Boone, (another great You Tube channel).
Thank you! I will be tossing my starter I made last spring, because of Passover. I find it interesting it only takes 7 days… so it will be perfect and ready when the fast of unleavened bread is over.
I wish I had found your site sooner! Just made my first scratch sourdough starter the more "usual" way (following a recipe from a flour website), and while it finally has seemed to turn out, I went through SO MUCH flour!!! I will for sure use your method for maintaining my starter :) Thanks for sharing you and your family's wisdom on sourdough and other homestead-y things :)
On day 3 of my first sourdough starter using just whole wheat flour and tap water, I had left out overnight to get rid of the clorine. I have watched a bizillion how-to's on sourdough starter. Yours is my favourite. I had stopped to get groceries, but the store I stopped at had neither rye flour nor caraway seeds. I will try those next time. I made my starter quite thick in hopes of getting a more sour bread (from your 17 tips video). It sttuck to the spoon the first two days . Today, it just started getting a slight sour smell and slid off the spoon. It had a very few bubbles yesterday. Today, it had about double the bubbles. I expect it will take awhile.in my cool kitchen. Looking forward to developing my relationship. Thank you so much for the encouragement!
I’m new to baking sourdough bread & was feeling so overwhelmed with the process until I found you! I was ready to give up but you have given me Hope & desire to try again with your approach! Thank you 🙏😊
Danke for the instructions & your patient responses to viewers’ comments. Am learning a lot just by reading your answers! Look forward to getting “started.”
I started baking a variety of breads and buns several years ago as I became more & more disappointed with store breads as they lacked in taste, went to three evening classes led by the youngest profi baker in Austria. I was interested in your approach to making a starter. I will definitively give it a try. Thanks for your informative video. Schöne Grüße aus Villach.
I’m in Ireland and it’s 1:15am in lockdown. I’d been looking into making sour dough for a while now but it seemed complicated so I was putting it off. I’ve just made your started right now in the middle of the night because it looks so natural and easy. I had also put off making brown soda bread for years as so many methods seemed complicated and I was constantly messing it up. I learned to relax and trust myself with the soda bread after a lady I cared for showed me how to make it. I found I was able to make it easily after they and now people ask me for that recipe all the time and really enjoy it. I really enjoyed your video lesson. I’ll pop back into the comments and let you know how it goes 🤞thank you 🙏
Nice!! You are doing it exactly right: just do it and trust your instincts! Sourdough isn't and shouldn't be complicated all at!! Thank you so much for your sweet midnight comment 💛 ~ Anja
I’m SO thrilled to find your channel, and I think I have watched each of your sourdough videos at least three times each now! I’m on day 6 of my starter and so far, so good!! I’m so grateful for your method, your amazing homestead-based skills and tips, and your fun, easygoing presence!! So fun!! Thanks for making these amazing videos! Bis spater. ❤️
Aww ... reading sweet comments like yours certainly make my day! I am so glad you like me sourdough method and my videos. Thank you so much and tschüss 💛 ~ Anja
Thank you so much for all your SUPER IDEAS. I now put a couple of Tablespoons FLOUR on top of my Genesis2 Sourdough Starter before I place it in the refrigerator....following feeding after using it to Bake. My Bread is still GREAT and mu sourdough is SUPER TOO. I bake every two weeks. ...sometimes more.
So glad you have these videos. Hoping to try and make a starter and sourdough, and as well as all of the confusion and complicated info around, anxious as I can't smell 2 years on from covid so can't depend on that. Nice to see visual cues too
I am having fun experimenting, so I created a second starter using this method, my first one was done with just Einkorn flour and water. This method made a really strong starter! It was probably ready on day 6, but I added a little more flour and gave it an extra 2 days, then it was bubbling like crazy, despite of a cold spell. It has a lot more dairy smell than my other starter, who is more on the vinegar-y side, the first one also isn't quite a strong (but usable, it made good bread, albeit dense. I only use 100% whole grains). First loaf with the new starter and whole Einkorn came out great, quite fluffy for 100% whole grain!
Hi Anja! My name is Anne from India. Happened to see ur video yesterday and immediately subscribed. Your such an amazing person loaded with knowledge about everything. So much to learn from you. Thank you so much for this sour dough recipe and much more. God bless you and your family.
I have to say THANK You!!! Thanks to your method I have now baked my second loaf of sourdough bread and it is delicious. Easy to make( I used yogurt) easy to maintain. Always wanted to do it naturally but all the measuring, discarding, weighing put me off. Not anymore❤❤❤
Nice work. To my dough, I frequently add yogurt, or replace the water with whey (from cheese that I've made). One might not be able to distinguish that it's there, (or exactly what it is) but when it's not added it is quite conspicuous by its absence. best of success for your future endeavors.
This is my first time making a traditional sourdough starter I'm using Einkorn wheat and buttermilk, it started out okay and then about day ten it just kind of went flat for a few days so I fed it some sugar which is what I use in my quick set sourdough starter to activate the store-bought yeast and it worked. Thanks for your help.
Anja, My SD bread turned out so good yummy! I used your starter method, but with yogurt as you suggested, added caraway seeds. I can't stop eating it. Thank you!
I really like your method! I don't like all the discard methods. I wonder if the feed/discard method takes so long because of all the discarding . I have watched some of your other videos on sourdough and hope to see more. 😊 Keep sharing, you have some good stuff!
I'm excited about trying this starter, I've never had any luck before. I don't have any butter milk so decided to make some by adding 1tbsp of lemon juice to 1 cup of milk and leave it to sit for 20mins till it sets. Hope it works, will clock back in and let you know how my starter turned out. Thank you for this starter recipe.
@@priyaannc Thank you for that information. That is why it hasn't worked, I got some bubbles on the 2nd day and now it's day 7 and nothing has happened. ☹️☹️☹️
Thank you so much for sharing this video. I made my sour dough starter 6 days ago, and checked it this morning and I have bubbles. YAY! You are so much fun to watch; thanks for your happy attitude. I love that your sour dough baking has been generational. Can't wait to make my bread. Have a beautiful day!
Ohmygoodness, I I’m watching your other sourdough starter video so I followed the link to this. Every other recipe for this is soo precise, weigh flour and water add to every 24 hours, sing to- etc. this seems tooeasy/good to be true, but it’s right up my alley. Thanks so much!
I really love the way you get so excited as it develops beautifully! 💪🏻😇🙏🏻✌🏻🤪👍🏻I started two actually today,(don't ask🥶) with Kifer!! I'm so excited🥳I really am!😎 Thank you for your love of sourdough!(can I say that?)😇🙏🏻✌🏻
@@OurGabledHome Found a bit of white fuzz in one of my starters(on the side of jar) I was torn, should I chuck it? Or no? I got brave and gave the whole thing a good stir and put in some fresh flour, two days later it looks and smells fine!💪🏻 I think I saved it!🤪 I just figured the good bacteria will kill the evil bacteria(if that what the fuzz was!) It was pure white but it disturbed me so I just stirred in some fresh flour and hoped for the best! Next morning it was all the way to the top of the jar, and no sign of "whitey"!!! I want to keep it going so it gets stronger and more sour! Am I missing something?🤯😎
I typed in "sourdough starter", watched a few clips and I have to say that falling on your channel was a god-send :) I love your method of explaining. I am subscribed now and looking forward to my journey into the sourdough world with your help. Thank you so much !!!
So glad to have come across you in someone else's video. I am on day 7 of making a starter and it does not want to be alive. Lol. Then I heard you say if we don't use sourdough we may not have any wild yeast in our air. Makes sense. I'm no quitter, I'll try to revive this one, but I also wanna make one your way. I will be going through all your vids. I am about to go all natural in my home. Hope the family is ready!! 😂🤣😂🤣😂
Danke, gracias, merci, thank you!!!! I can’t tell you how many starters I threw away because nothing happened . I started one 2 days ago and yay so many bubbles. I’m so excited to make a loaf in a few days. You are an absolute lifesaver.
I know this is an old video (and you said in a newer video not to come watch this one 😆 but I disobeyed 😉) This was amazing!! I have never seen starter done like this. Thank you for sharing!
I know this is an older video but I've watched it a few times and will probably watch it a couple more times...so I finally went for it and started mine today!! I'm using Bob's Red Mill organic dark rye flour. I don't have a beeswax wrap yet but I'm my to do list.. I covered it with a cloth and used the band to keep it closed.. my kitchen is about 68deg... Hope it turns out. Thanks for such a great video!😊❤️
Yay! That makes me so happy to hear!! It sounds like you're doing everything right and cloth works great to keep critters out. Happy sourdoughing thank you so much for your sweet comment ~ Anja
Thank you thank you thank you thank you I am sort of a no measure gal so happy to find you and that is so much easier to keep in the feedings thank you! I just ruined a sourdough starter that somebody gave me and I’m kind of happy it happened because that’s how I found you so I’m going to start your method today or tomorrow!
Thank you for the video. This will be my first sourdough starter. I've watched so many videos that were so scientific and seem to require a commitment that was just too much. I've just mixed up my flour and buttermilk. I'll comment as I get further along.
Wow! I'm a true novice. I started noticing tiny bubbles yesterday! I doubted myself and said they must be from me stirring it and incorporating air. But today, it's bubbling like a witch's cauldron! I can't believe it still. I'm almost frozen in my tracks. Is it really time to make my first sourdough bread using my own starter? I'm so excited!
Well I started my starter just as you did 3 days ago. This morning it had risen to the top of the jar so I did what you do. First the smell test, then the wooden spoon tapping and stirring. It smell very sour but I will give it another day before trying to bake something. This starter is very thick almost like a very very sticky wet dough? Hoping it’s the start of a great starter 😃. Thank you very much.
Hi Sharon, that sounds so awesome and right on! I hope that you will now bake a lot of breads and other goods! Thank you so much for sharing 💛😍💛 ~ Anja
Just starting out I made one bread and I’m working on my second sourdough because I was traveling I’ve got to take it out of the refrigerator and so anyhow I’m doing a new one are using your method and so far so good thank you
Hello, thanks for your videos. My question is-what you do when you use that amount to make the bread? Do you leave a certain amount in the jar and just add flour and water again?how much? Do you still grow that new one for six days? I’m so confused, although baked lots of bread with fresh yeast. Thanks
I tried other sourdough starter...unfortunately, never worked for me( I probably was impatient, and thought I did it wrong) I loved that you went through each day... being patient for the perfect smell, and look. I appreciate that you don’t waste(discard).... you’ve inspired me so much tonight that I actually paused the video after you made your starter, and went to the kitchen to make my own...(had just enough buttermilk)😉 Now back to your video, and excited this may be just the starter I needed. Thank you 😊 🥖 🍞🥰
Hi Theresa, I am so glad you like my sourdough method! I am releasing an updated video on the same method on 4/12/22 that you might like as well 😊 ~ Anja
I'm very pleased with my first loaf baked with this starter that you taught me. I've not seen an easier more to the point process anywhere. And boy do I have a lot of starter for much more bread Thanks so much! Now on the How to Make Buttermilk school! And of course more bread! 😂🍞🥖
Hi Anja, I love your channel. I just found you today. I threw out some beautiful starter bc I couldn't keep up with the feeding. Now I find you and your method, so I will start again. So happy to find this method. I make my own kefir. So I am going to try that instead. I'll let you know how it works out. Can't wait.
I'm a new subscriber and have watched one other of your videos so I decided to watch you create the sourdough. I'm enjoying watching so far but I'm also enjoying watching the lovely plant on the right hand side of your windowsill with the pink flower. May I ask what it is? And thank you for being so kind as to share your knowledge of sourdough starters and bread. I spent many years in Germany and enjoyed and loved the breads so very much. Brotchen is one of my favorites. And finally, America is beginning to make and enjoy really crusty breads instead of the "bagged air" available in the grocery stores. Again, thank you so much.
Thank you so much for your nice comment and for sharing your story! Germans sure love their Brot and Brötchen 😊. Honestly, I can't tell you what that pink flower is. The greenery is cut boxwood but I can't remember what the flower is 🤷♀️
I love your site! I am trying the sourdough starter today. Have worked the other type, even took a class. This seems more authentic. I'll report later on my progress. Also want to try making the wax covers. I have some and they are not cheap!
Hi Cecilia, you have no idea how happy it makes me to hear that you are loving your sourdough and your bread! Thank you so much for commenting 💛 ~ Anja
THIS is the method that appeals to me. I've watched many videos/read blogs, but none have encouraged me to try that method, but this one does! Wish me luck! I hear sourdough is so much better for you. I plan on using fresh milled flour. Any recommendations on which wheatberry to use? I am not a rye fan, but maybe that's my child's mind. Would love feedback. God bless 💗
Great! As for what kind of grains or flour, I would say use what's easiest to find. I often switch things up myself and all the breads come out beautiful. Thank you so much for your sweet comment 💛 ~ Anja
I am so glad i found your channel. I have been watching so many that make it so complicated. I am really surprised that you don't add more flour or water each day and you are not looking for it to double. Did I miss something
Hi Renee, sourdough does not have to be complicated and have been using this method for decades. My method works every single time - just as I describe in the video. Hope this helps and happy sourdoughing 😊 ~ Anja
Renee...that is what makes this particular sourdough starter so fabulous is you don't have to weigh and discard and all those complicated steps...plus it's more "mellow" that the ones that require all the steps...but end up sooooo darn tangy that you can't enjoy the bread!!!
I just wanted to Thank you for this video. I tried to make a starter 2 times and failed. So I found this video and tried it and oh my it sure did work. I even had to go on a trip from Tx to La and brought it with me because it was not done yet. While in La it rose and almost overflowed my jar. I was so excited. It was quick. I saw nothing for several days then one day I saw a few bubbles, stirred it and left it alone till the next day. I opened it and it has rose to about 1/2 from the top. So I stirred it down and fed it. By 2pm it was almost over topping the jar so I started my first ever sourdough bread. I can't say it was a complete success but I won't say it was a failure either. It just did not rise very much. I think the recipe I followed was not a good one. But anyway my picky grand daughter who will NOT eat the crust of regular bread loved it and ate the crust. So now I am looking for a recipe you use for sourdough bread and will try that tomorrow. I have to get my starter out of the fridge this evening. Again, Thank you so much for sharing. God Bless
That is so awesome! I am so happy for you to have a good sourdough starter. Have you tried my easy no-knead sourdough bread: ruclips.net/video/s1wpHMEhc08/видео.html 💛 ~ Anja
@@OurGabledHome I only made the one so far. Was with my 2 year old grand son who had a lil surgery so it was a bit too hard to do more. I did as you said and put a lot of flour in it and some on top and put it in the fridge. I wanted one with just the sourdough starter. The one I used the other day was a one day one. I did not have the time to let it go overnight. lol Thanks again.
Dear Mam, I am so so glad to find your channel, especially this video showing how to make a starter without feeding and wasting. I made my starter with spelt flour and caraway seed and I place the jar in the owen cause my house is kind of cold during winter. Today is the 4th day and my starter rose more than double in size and it reached the top of the jar. I wonder if I can use it to make breads by now or should I wait till 7 days? Again thank you so much for sharing a wonderful recipe and tips. Please continue with more helpful videos. 🙏🏻
It could very well be that you already have a good starter on day 4!!! You could do the float test (drop a bit of starter in a glass of water, it it floats, it's ready) or try baking with it! That is so awesome!!! Thank you so for sharing and for commenting 💛 ~ Anja
Hello, thank you for the tutorial which is easy to understand :) Can I ask why do we use buttermilk and not just water to make the starter? Would be trying for the first time .
Hi Jasmine, you can absolutely just use water. I like using buttermilk because the active live cultures in it give the sourdough starter a jumpstart. Thank you for commenting and happy sourdoughing 💛 ~ Anja
Thank you, thank you, thank you for sharing this method. As someone new to making bread I wanted to learn but so many videos were a lot of feedings and discards and seemed confusing, complicated and wasteful. I almost didn’t try until this video. I made my first loaf last night and eating tonight. So good! And storing it the way suggested because I don’t bake every day is also awesome. I know your video is older but how would you share starter with someone else ? Would you feed and then divide or divide it and feed each portion?
I am so glad to hear you're enjoying my SD method! You can absolutely feed your starter a bit more flour (and water), then divide it, and give it to someone else 👍 ~ Anja
I’ve been a subscriber for awhile and just watched this video for the first time. I recently had to get rid of my starter and want to try yours I’m hoping that I can produce something similar to your breads as my husbands family is all from Germany and I would love to give them a taste of home.

You are a great teacher and obviously a very nice person. I am starting my starter today and used Greek yogurt instead of buttermilk. After my starter is ready to go can I use bleached flour when making my bread? Also, will the chlorine in our local water cause problems? Thanks! George
aww ... thank you so much for you kind comment! Bleached flour should be fine; sourdough is pretty forgiving but I would use filtered water if you can. Hope this helps and happy baking ~ Anja

Because I have used caraway seeds all my life 😂😅 Cumin seeds 🤦🏻♀️🙆🏻♀️💁🏻♀️ Thank you 😊 I will send a new message and let you know how my yeasts works and bread 🥖 thank you 🙏🏻
I just found your video and I’m so excited about sourdough. You’re so relaxed and easygoing about it. Do you have a video making the bread? I’ve heard so many times that whole wheat flour is not for sourdough bread. I like to grind my own grain but I’m afraid to use it because of what I’ve heard, so I’ve been making my bread with white Kamut flour. It’s pricy and hard to find.
Hi Martha! I am so glad you like my sourdough method! And sourdough is perfect for whole grain, whatever you are using (I mostly use fresh-milled spelt, einkorn, and/or rye). Here is a bread video you might like: ruclips.net/video/L5GgppcclBM/видео.html Happy sourdoughing 💛 ~ Anja
Good idea using the buttermilk. Do you have a video for the hardcore German bread using the starter that you prefer but not the family? It's the style i like from time to time. Both my Great Grand Fathers on mom's side came from Germany. One was a baker and i use one of his bowls still. Making bread is good therapy. Thank you.
That's great that you still have your great grandfather's bowl!! Here's a video for a true German whole-grain bread: ruclips.net/video/L5GgppcclBM/видео.html Thank you so much for sharing and commenting 💛 ~ Anja
Anja, Thank you for sharing your method of sour dough starter. I started mine 5 ago with the caraway seed. It never seemed to bubble and this afternoon it had a black mold place toward the top of the jar. I had it in a glass mason jar and covered with a papertowel. Does it need to be air tight? What did I do wrong. Thank you
Mold can form for a number of reasons: the jar not being clean (even soap residue can mess up your SD starter), mold spores in the air, contaminated water, or temperatures too hot and/or too humid. The starter does not have to be airtight, just keep the critters out. I recommend starting over again. I have another video you might like: ruclips.net/video/NGqHjRttVXQ/видео.html Hope this helps 😊 ~ Anja
@@OurGabledHome Thank you for the response. I ran everything thru the dishwasher and began again. I have some bubbles and it smells nice. @@maryfletcher5073 that sounds great! My best advice would be to not give up! There is no age limit on sourdough. Once you get it going, you'll be glad you persisted. Best of luck 🍀 ~ Anja
Well darn it , I was really hoping this would work for me, but it did not. I’m sure I’m doing something wrong. Twice my starter got mold before it was ripe. The first time on day 6, and the second try on day 3. I was careful and hygienic, doing just as instructed here. Tthe room is not hot or humid but 72f consistently. The small amount of water used was distilled. I live in a very dry part of the world. I used unbleached bread flour. I kept it covered with a loose lid. I’m going to try a method without buttermilk instead.
Sounds good. Unfortunately, I can't tell you what has been going wrong but it seems like you did all the right things. Hope you have more luck with a flour-water sourdough starter, though 😌 ~ Anja
Thanks so much for the video - much easier than me having to do it every day when I only bake once per week. Do you have videos of recipes for sourdough baking? Thanks and cheers from Australia.
Hi I’m in love with your sour bread method . Unfortunately I don’t find cultured butter milk in Sri Lanka to make the sour dough starter . Please tell me how to make a cultured buttermilk . We do get curd and plain yogurt and fresh milk . Please help me if possible Thank you
great video full of information...thank you for sharing...I have a question, can I use the powered buttermilk that I have? I buy it at a grocery store, and you add water to make it liquid.
Hi Dora, I am so glad you like my sourdough method! You can use powdered buttermilk as long as it is cultured (should say that on the label). Hope this helps and thank you for your nice comment 😊 ~ Anja
I just found your channel here on RUclips (very helpful) and I have a question. When using a homemade soy yogurt for the starter, what do I use when maintaining it? Does it have to be yogurt again, or can it be water? How do you do that with your buttermilk starter? TIA! I like this idea for a sourdough, thank you! :)

I see you as ANYTHING but “stiff!”
You are a natural for sharing your generational wisdom, and we....the benefactors are grateful!
I am so glad you like this video. The content is still relevant 3 years later but the production value could certainly be better 😌 ~ Anja
Wonderful!
Hi Kathy, I am so glad you like my sourdough method and my videos! Happy sourdoughing 💛 ~ Anja
You are so welcome. You can do it!
I’m new to baking sourdough bread & was feeling so overwhelmed with the process until I found you! I was ready to give up but you have given me Hope & desire to try again with your approach! Thank you 🙏😊

Thanks for sharing! Hope you enjoy it!

Did u use cold or room temperature buttermilk?
@@maggiewanjogu2168 That’s my question too as i just took mine out to come to room temperature the buttermilk that is.
Thank you so much for all your SUPER IDEAS. I now put a couple of Tablespoons FLOUR on top

after using it to Bake. My Bread is still GREAT and mu sourdough is SUPER TOO. I bake
every two weeks. ...sometimes more.
That sounds great! I am so glad to hear you found a method that works for you 👍 ~ Anja
Nice!! What you're smelling is the lactic acid (milk) vs the acetic acid bacteria (more vinegary) but in any case, it sounds like you got it 👍 ~ Anja

I'm excited about trying this starter, I've never had any luck before. Hope it works, will clock back in and let you know how my starter turned out. Thank you for this starter recipe.
Hope you enjoy it!
It won’t work 😢, because here you want cultures of yogurt / buttermilk not just sour tasting milk.

God Bless

I'm an 80 year old who always wanted to do sour dough, but the more I read the more scientific it seemed. When my children were home I used to bake daily, with a starter called everlasting yeast. When I found your channel I thought this method would work for me. Thank you for sharing.
@@maryfletcher5073 that sounds great! My best advice would be to not give up! There is no age limit on sourdough. Once you get it going, you'll be glad you persisted. Best of luck 🍀 ~ Anja
@@OurGabledHome Anja, I made a loaf of sour dough bread today using your recipe. It is delicious. Thank you again.
This is great I look forward to making it! 😊 Just one quick question can you start it with water or does it need to be buttermilk?
Yes, you can absolutely make the sourdough starter with only water and flour! Thank you for commenting and happy sourdoughing 💛 ~ Anja
@@OurGabledHome thanks Anja ☺️
@@ewa.jemima 😊
@@OurGabledHome hey anja it’s working!! I can see the my starter bubbling up 🙌😁
@@ewa.jemima that is so awesome! Congrats!!!
Cannot wait to try this out,by the way where did you get your apron, I love it
wonderful! Happy sourdoughing! I made my apron: ruclips.net/video/_HMp5Builgs/видео.html
Well darn it , I was really hoping this would work for me, but it did not. I’m sure I’m doing something wrong. Twice my starter got mold before it was ripe. The first time on day 6,
and the second try on day 3.
Yay! I am so glad that you like my sourdough method 💛 ~ Anja

Hi from Kathmandu, I am trying to make as per your method which is simple .But I don’t know how to use in my bread. Thank you.
Have you watched this video: ruclips.net/video/s1wpHMEhc08/видео.html ? Hope that helps 😊 ~ Anja
Hi I’m in love with your sour bread method . Unfortunately I don’t find cultured butter milk in Sri Lanka to make the sour dough starter . Please tell me how to make a cultured buttermilk . We do get curd and plain yogurt and fresh milk . Please help me if possible Thank you
Thank you so much. You can watch this video with more information: ruclips.net/video/whGTP6YkRzg/видео.html Happy sourdoughing 😊 ~ Anja
great video full of information...thank you for sharing...I have a question, can I use the powered buttermilk that I have? I buy it at a grocery store, and you add water to make it liquid.
Hi Dora, I am so glad you like my sourdough method! You can use powdered buttermilk as long as it is cultured (should say that on the label). Hope this helps and thank you for your nice comment 😊 ~ Anja
Hi . Thank you for sharing. It’s very informative. Will it also work using natural yoghurt or old milk instead? Thank you.
Yogurt will work but not milk. I have more substitutions in this video: ruclips.net/video/whGTP6YkRzg/видео.html

Hi! Thanks for this video! 🙂 Does this method work with just flour and water too? Day 1-7 just stir? No discard?
No, without the buttermilk you’ll have to discard and feed
@@OurGabledHome ok. Thank you! 🙂
Paula from Mexico. I was thinking, the half you poured away, you could have made a second jar, as a backup or for making more bread.
I know I could have ... currently I have a lot of dehydrated back-up sourdough starter, though 😊 ~ Anja
