Would be nice to specify which string to use for the measurement on a harp tailpiece, since were talking about optimizing instruments, better just use the best tailpieces for it
Good point! If you have the possibility to choose take the shorter one. Just because that gives you the opportunity to adjust without length obstacle issues!
What considerations do you take if you have fine tuners, or no fret on the tailpiece? Should we just use the 54.66….mm length to the end of the string?
I believe the idea behind all of this is that every tone also produces overtones. And the frequency of overtones are always whole multiple of the fundamental frequency. That's why you take 1/6 and not e.g. 1/6,3 ;-) So long story short: if your tailpieces doesn't have a fret I guess you should get one with fret :D The fret is just there to make the distance more accurate.
Edgar, Would you please, at some point, address the end-length of cello strings (harp tailpiece?) I’m a cellist and interested. I did take your recommendation and got a Bender endpin and LOVE it! Thank you!!!!
You are absolutely fantastic, thank you. If one day i can afford a fine violin, i will buy from you! But meanwhile, I am monoparental and trying to do something nice for my daughter! Is using your measurement at 75% to apply on a 3/4 be accurate? Also, would you happen to have a book in your name i could buy? Especially about measurements!
A humble question concerning my violin: if I set the bridge exactly to string length 32.8mm, it stands 2/3 BEHIND the f-hole line. What is the priority in such case?
1:25 32,8 cm (Menzura to odległość od progu na którym opiera się struna do mostka (podstawka)gdzie też się struna opiera przy skrzypcach 4/4 to 327 mm.) ?
Thanks Edgar for your help and expertise!! Can you tell us exactly what aspect of tone does the after length affect! IE does it decrease or increase finger spacing for notes played? Thanks again!🙏🙏🙏
Thank you very much for all your great insights! I have an old violin and the dimensions are not standard. When I tune the afterlength of the G-string to one octave higher than an open D string, then I get a very good result. This happens to be close to the 5.47 mm you specify, but not exactly.
I have just measured my violin, 32.8cm and 5.4cm. Amazing! My violin , which is Chinese built, has been built with skill, but skill has not been built into it.
Yes you are right! I am not a big fan since it changes a lot but most o the times not to a better and more open sound. But they change! So in case you don’t like how your violin sounds than put it on and you will obtain a different sound which is “better” 😅
Hi,thnx for the great helpful videos... Q:in the case that we have a wolf sound is better to try different type of tailpiece to keep the correct distance? Or that will not make the difference? I've try the thomastic otto tailpiece were it has a wonderful shape (4 fine tuners) and i am very happy with it,but i can not find to by the same now for my second instrument...
Probably it’s a better solution to reduce the distance to change the wolf tone. But actually if you want to change the tailpiece that would be an ideal moment to do so!
When I divide 32.8 by 6 I get 5.4666666 not 54.66666. If it came to be 54.66666 the distance between the bridge and tailpiece would be greater than the distance from the nut to the bridge.
Thank-you Edgar, excellent video and explanations! All the best to you 😃🎻
Im also interested in how to adjust a harp style tailpiece.
Thanking you from Jamaica 🇯🇲
Thanks for your msg!
👋🏼
Thank you from Egypt
You are welcome Mostafa!
As usual, most informative.
Very interested
Edgar, have you tried the carbon-fiber tailgut? I read that one of carbon fiber's alleged benefits is not stretching like regular tailgut.
1/6 the of 32.8 equals 5.46666 not 54.6666, please elaborate how your calculated it ?
54.66 mm. He converted to millimeters on the smaller measurement.
Should off been 54.67.
Edgar, are there adjustments that might increase the projection of a violin? Maybe you have a video on this? Thank you!
JL

I would love to own one of his violins. I’m not ready yet, still a rank beginner…
25grand only
What about the size of the tailpiece?

what about Viola?
Exactly the same!
The distance should be 1/6 of the total string length!
And what about Viola?
1/6 like he said. Jus do math

Great video as usual. I am also very curious about adjusting a harp tailpiece?
I will keep my 👀 open and as soon I have one I will make. A video about it!
👌🏼
In the clips at the end of this video- is that a mineral ground being applied? Is there a video discussing this?

One question. If my instrument has 4 fine tuners, is the tail piece measurement effected ?
A humble question concerning my violin: if I set the bridge exactly to string length 32.8mm, it stands 2/3 BEHIND the f-hole line. What is the priority in such case?
Hi Edgar, what are the correct measurements for a cello? Thank's a lot
Does anyone have any info on a Franz Sandner Model FS803 violin.

what does that mean exactly?
Which notes should we hear playing the strings between the bridge and the tailpiece? Can it be a clue about a good setting of the violin?
Thanks for another informative video! Quick question... what about harp-style tailpieces? What would be the optimal distance for them?
PS Yes, I'm aware people do not like them that much. I suspect you're not a fan either as you do not seem to use them.

MR.EDGAR, WHAT SHOULD BE THE EXACT DISTA CE BETWEEN TAIL PIECE AND BRIDGE AND ALSO THE DISTANCE BETWEEN BRIDGE TO THE NUT? PLS ANSWER
Thought he went over all that in the video?

5.466 cm = 54.66 mm
@@orenburg6318 right. But why not divide 328 by 6?
Yes . Exactly. Centimetres are the cause of so much confusion.
Please metres and millimetres only please.
55 mm Don't agree
Sorry, but I can't watch this video with all the camera trickery going on. I find it very annoying.
Jeez, get to the fing POINT already! I neither NEED or WANT a LECTURE! Just GIVE me the damn DISTANCE!
😂😂😂😜🕺🏽
Just be nice. A lot of us needed the explanation.
