    Edgar, have you tried the carbon-fiber tailgut? I read that one of carbon fiber's alleged benefits is not stretching like regular tailgut.

    1/6 the of 32.8 equals 5.46666 not 54.6666, please elaborate how your calculated it ?

      54.66 mm. He converted to millimeters on the smaller measurement.

    Would be nice to specify which string to use for the measurement on a harp tailpiece, since were talking about optimizing instruments, better just use the best tailpieces for it

    What about the size of the tailpiece?

    • @EdgarRuss
      @EdgarRuss  Год назад +5

      Good point! If you have the possibility to choose take the shorter one. Just because that gives you the opportunity to adjust without length obstacle issues!

  • @orenburg6318
    @orenburg6318 Год назад +2

    What considerations do you take if you have fine tuners, or no fret on the tailpiece? Should we just use the 54.66….mm length to the end of the string?

    • @Zaphitos
      @Zaphitos Год назад

      I believe the idea behind all of this is that every tone also produces overtones. And the frequency of overtones are always whole multiple of the fundamental frequency. That's why you take 1/6 and not e.g. 1/6,3 ;-) So long story short: if your tailpieces doesn't have a fret I guess you should get one with fret :D The fret is just there to make the distance more accurate.

      The distance should be 1/6 of the total string length!

    You are absolutely fantastic, thank you. If one day i can afford a fine violin, i will buy from you! But meanwhile, I am monoparental and trying to do something nice for my daughter! Is using your measurement at 75% to apply on a 3/4 be accurate? Also, would you happen to have a book in your name i could buy? Especially about measurements!

    Thank you very much for all your great insights! I have an old violin and the dimensions are not standard. When I tune the afterlength of the G-string to one octave higher than an open D string, then I get a very good result. This happens to be close to the 5.47 mm you specify, but not exactly.

    • @SeasickSailor76
      @SeasickSailor76 Год назад

      PS Yes, I'm aware people do not like them that much. I suspect you're not a fan either as you do not seem to use them.

    • @edgarruss6349
      @edgarruss6349 Год назад +2

      Yes you are right! I am not a big fan since it changes a lot but most o the times not to a better and more open sound. But they change! So in case you don’t like how your violin sounds than put it on and you will obtain a different sound which is “better” 😅

    Hi,thnx for the great helpful videos...
    Q:in the case that we have a wolf sound is better to try different type of tailpiece to keep the correct distance?
    Or that will not make the difference?
    I've try the thomastic otto tailpiece were it has a wonderful shape (4 fine tuners) and i am very happy with it,but i can not find to by the same now for my second instrument...

    • @EdgarRuss
      @EdgarRuss  Год назад

      Probably it’s a better solution to reduce the distance to change the wolf tone. But actually if you want to change the tailpiece that would be an ideal moment to do so!

  • @TNungesser
    @TNungesser Год назад +2

    When I divide 32.8 by 6 I get 5.4666666 not 54.66666.
    If it came to be 54.66666 the distance between the bridge and tailpiece would be greater than the distance from the nut to the bridge.

    • @orenburg6318
