Thank you very much. Retired and trying to occupy time with things I always thought of doing but never had the time. Saw a planer on sale and before buying, thought I would educate myself on the technics. You gave me a good idea on how to handle one. The do's and don'ts. Your video was excellent in that you explained and followed up with a demonstration of what you meant. Keep up the good work.
Thank you for a short simple video on the use of this tool, no long rambling tangents. Just the information that's useful, so am subscribing to your channel.👍
What a great demo and teacher! Now I know how to use a planer. I have several drawers and doors I need to plane down. You explained it so well. Thanks for no music, such joy! Glad to see that Ryobi makes one. I'm tired of Dewalt prices for tools made in China. Tip - for reclaimed pallet wood - tap the wood out using a piece of wood and hammer. Then use an Airlocker Reverse Nail Gun with compressor to knock out all the nails fast from any piece of wood. Such a time saver!
Man, this video was crazy informative!!! Thank you for the contribution, I'm sure it's helped alot of people like myself that were confused gouging wood and misusing the tool. Like the saying goes "You don't know what you don't know, so start learning".
Thanks for the video. I just bought the planner you demonstrated as I have some door edges I need to clean up a bit and decided that after using a block plane for the last 30 years I deserve an electric planner. When I opened the box I saw the guide and got a little confused about how it worked. I'm glad you covered this in the video or else I would have had to break a long standing tradition of not reading the manual.
Awesome! I just bought that same planer the other day to use on our interior doors. Really easy to use, but I was wondering why the edges weren’t coming out even. You explained everything. Thank you!
I’m a newbie to woodworking, and basically learning on my own. I’ve had this planner for a couple years now because I couldn’t find the right information to use it properly. This is hands down the best video I’ve come across on how to use this planner. Thank you for such detailed information. Now I’m going to go try it out.. lol. Wish me luck 🍀
This was excellent! I'm a beginner and just bought the ryobi cordless. Wanted to learn everything I could before using. Your details and demonstration showed me just what I needed to know. Thank you!
This helped me a lot. Getting a gift for my sister's husband and was not sure if hand planers were any good. I have only ever used a large table planer before. Great results it looks like if you know how to use it. Appreciate it, man!
Thank you. I did buy a similar type of planer but a different manufacturer. Wanted a planer 101 video and you fit the bill with your tips and easy to understand steps. Great video without wasting time on the fluff.
"EXCELLENT Tutorial" by a superb instructor! Well done good sir, well done ! I just purchased a new HD Planer to turn a massive 2" thick slab of Douglas Fir into a gorgeous Sofa Table. The quality of this instruction will help greatly to avert any potential damage through my ignorance, which has been greatly mitigated thanks to your video.
Your a life saver. I have been putting off getting a planner because I wont use it much but you have shown me what it could be used for besides planning a door. Thank you.
Thank you so much. I seen your video before buying one and now I'm waiting on my husband to bring mine home. I can honestly say after 5 videos yours is the one that gets to the subject more quickly.
Good video. But I have some suggested tweaks. From my experience, if I want to take off material in the center area of a board, I mark the start and end points on the board and set the planer depth knob to 0 when I start a pass and as I approach the start mark I start turning the depth adjustment a bit to begin taking out material. When I approach the end mark I start turning the depth knob towards 0 so by time I reach the end mark I am at 0. It takes a few passes and maybe a little practice on some scrap lumber but I find this easier and less chance of taking off too much material at the starting area by dropping the planer down mid-stream of the area that needs material removal. I also don't find myself needing to raise the planer up at the end of a run as suggested if I put pressure at the back end of the planer as you suggested but keep the pressure on as I come to the end of the run. I find if you don't time the going upwards just right, you might come up too early and then miss taking off material at the end.
Thank you. Your video helps. I bought my first Planer. One of the joists on my floating deck is arching so that's my project. Your video explains every part of the tool and shows you how to use it properly to get the best result.
I was just saying in another video how much I wanted to look at that electric hand planer and I never saw it before and then I caught this video on how to use it. I'm so excited. That is the next thing on my Home Depot list. Not to mention that I just hung up drywall and I wish I saw your video beforehand because you gave me a lot to think about. Not that it didn't come out good hahaha
Really helpful thank you. I first started watching some aussie who didn't show all the basics like you did such as showing how to plane from the middle of the work piece etc.
Most Americans say rye-oh-bee. A slightly better way is ree-oh-bee. The correct, Japanese way is lee-oh-bee, where the lee-oh sound is kind of ran together as one syllable. Hard to explain, so just say ree-oh-bee. Great, to the point video!
Thanks for the video, but what’s the best approach for planing a wider face service, more than the width of the planer blade where you want an even planed surface all across the face? You’re video shows the same info most other similar RUclips videos show on this subject. Would like to see a larger surface bring planed and demonstrated.
Use a pencil to mark high places, plane said marks removing high places, checking with a long straight edge such as a four foot level, mark high spots again. Repeat until surface is flat
RYOBI is supposed to be mimicking a Japanese brand name (it's not)... So RYO (rio) BI (bee) is the proper pronunciation. Based on the Japanese characters Ri-yo-bi. Japanese would actually sound more like LYOBI
Here I'm going to tell you what I think of this video... and I'm going to do that right now. Love that part of your videos. Very good video, detailed, etc. I would like an electric planer but I don't plane things that much.
This is the best video I've seen on how to use a plane i baught a second hand plane and it was different from my old plane and i couldn't get a manual but you're video covered everything i needed from the kick plate to the attachments realy helpful!
This was a great video. My husband does allot of hand planed sassafras boat paddles and is getting wore out using hand planes. Might show him this video!!
I liked what I saw, short and to the point. Reason for watching is I have a project where I have to use narrower pieces of board than what is sold. Also another excuse to get a useful tool. Thanks.
Good video, definitely learned a bit. Looking to get and use one to hand plane some slabs I cut with my chainsaw, and they are definitely bumpy. If I wanted to take all those high spots down first, would going over it with 0 first be the way, or just start on the first adjustment, and go from there?
Thank you! I have an old Ryobi (blue); it is battery powdered. I have have an electric one too--a Bausch. I learned a lot. Please do post a video on changing he blades.
Thank you for this video. Your explanation of the hand planner was on point and direct. I appreciate it and learned so much. Ryobi’s manual for this tool leaves a lot to be desired. I would have had to learn by trial and error exactly what Ryobi means by pushing the tool down the wood in a “slow” manner, for example. It was good to see the tool in action. Anyway, loved the video and subscribed to your channel. Best regards.
I just began woodworking and using Ryobi tools. I 100% agree with what you said about their manuals. RUclips videos from people like this have been far more helpful.
Thanks for the vid man! Have used this planet multiple times and it’s great (at least in the short term) and I just needed a quick refresher on the operation.
Thanks so much for putting this together. Unfortunately I got this planer first then I watched this video. So I have a lot of mistakes to fix, but it looks like you covered everything I did wrong and how to fix it. Do you recommend using wax on the planer?
Great video thank you. Question... just purchased one of these planers to trim down a few doors. I noticed that after a few passes the planer was cutting one edge of the door more than the other, leaving an angle on the door edge. Is this a result of the blade not being square with the bottom plate? Thanks.
Good video. I have replaced a couple of pine floor boards but they are about 3mm higher than the original ones. They are 145mm wide. I just need to level the edge of the new floor boards to minimise the sharp higher edge. Will this tool be suitable and can i do the planing in situ or do i take the boards out.
This was great. I love how you explain and then show what you're talking about. This can't take the place of a bigger planet, can it? For bigger pieces?
Great video ! Thanks for the Information. My question is regarding tha calibration of the blade. You mentioned that blade should not being in contact with the wood surface when leveled at 0. However I watch another video where the Instructor said that blade should be in contact for around and 1/8 of inch. What would be your recommended measurement?
Great video. Thanks for the tips/tricks. I also have many hand planers from my grandfather. Question: Can I use this device to somewhat flatten out a bar top that I'm making? It's made from 3 pieces of 8" wide walnut boards for a total of ~24" to plane. Not looking for perfectly flat btw. Thanks!!
Can you show how to bevel the leading edge of a door 2 to 3 degrees to allow closer fit? I have this same planer and can't figure it out (besides just eye balling it). 😢
Thank you! We bought a different brand but no instructions how to use, which i need since I've never used one before! I saw Ben using a big industrial one on Home Town and i just had to have one but can't afford what he has lol
Very informative explanation and you got the point and showed us what you were talking about. I have this exact planer. I can read the manual, but manuals don't absorb as much as watching something show me how to use something. So thank you very much for your video. Thumbs up and new sub here.
Awesome explanation on how to use the electric hand planer! Wish you would show how to use more tools! I am a beginner and would like to learn as much as possible about the tools I have purchased. I have been purchasing Ryobi tools such as the portable table saw, mitre saw, orbital sander, driver, drill, etc. Would LOVE to know all the tricks! You were absolutely FANTASTIC and thorough with the explanations. THANK YOU!
Love your videos!! Quick question I’m going to get started in cutting boards and charcuterie boards. I don’t want to spend a bunch of money on a thickness planer yet, can this electric planer get me buy??

Straight to the point, learnt a lot in 11 mins, no BS. Thanks Matt. Purchased the 18 volt cordless today ands works a treat.
Do you still use this 18v tool today ? How was the build quality

This is greatly appreciated!!!!! I really can't put in writing how thankful I am for this! Take care!
I just bought a corded model like yours. You saved me a ton of reading and gave some great tips to a first time user.
This helped me a lot. Getting a gift for my sister's husband and was not sure if hand planers were any good. I have only ever used a large table planer before. Great results it looks like if you know how to use it. Appreciate it, man!
This was actually a really awesome how to video !! Thank you for taking the time to make a detailed video on the proper use of a hand planer!
Great video! I used mine and made the mistakes you pointed out, now I know better. Can you do a tutorial on flattening table top with uneven boards?
Thank you. I did buy a similar type of planer but a different manufacturer. Wanted a planer 101 video and you fit the bill with your tips and easy to understand steps. Great video without wasting time on the fluff.

Just received this planer for Xmas. This video was very helpful. No fluff, no bull, just the ins and outs on how to use it. Well done.
Thank you so much. I seen your video before buying one and now I'm waiting on my husband to bring mine home. I can honestly say after 5 videos yours is the one that gets to the subject more quickly.
Great video!
I run a strong magnet over the wood first, it helps find any hidden nails - top tip, you’re welcome 👍
I run a strong nail over the wood too, trying to find any hidden magnets- it must work because I have yet to find any magnets in the wood.
I just carry a few extra blades for every job site , nothing worse than being caught pants down in the middle of nowhere without an extra blade
@@BeachsideHank 🤣
Was hoping to see you try the planer on a wide surface. Thinking about resurfacing cabinets. 18" wide.
Thanks for making this video! I now feel more comfortable and safe knowing what the parts do and the safest practices.
Really learned how to use my Ryobi planer. Thank you for a very educational video and clear explanation.

Good straightforward instruction , I like how you don't get hypnotized by the sound of your own voice .. I just subscribed

straight to the point informative no bla bla ...i like this kind of vdos
Really helpful thank you. I first started watching some aussie who didn't show all the basics like you did such as showing how to plane from the middle of the work piece etc.

Just ordered one of these Ryobi planers after watching this very informative video. Thank you.

Thank you for covering all the material i had questions on. I'm so excited to use this thing

Thank you so much!!! Its a shame that the actual company that makes the tool doesn't have a video up like this
Loved the way you explained and demonstrated
