Final Fantasy 7 Remake vs Original - 15 BIGGEST Story Changes You Need To Know

- Given that Square Enix have chosen to remake Final Fantasy 7 over multiple instalments, each of which is going to be a full-length game, we always knew that they'd be making quite a few changes to the story- and they've certainly done so. Even though Final Fantasy 7 Remake only covers the Midgar section of the original game - which was essentially just 5-6 hours - there's still a lot of narrative additions, changes, and expansions to speak of.
Here, we're going to talk about 15 such changes. This should go without saying, but there are major spoilers ahead for Final Fantasy 7 Remake, so if you haven't finished it, turn back now. So let's kick things off, and let's begin with a relatively smaller one.

Those "Whispers" are literally plot armor manifestation.
Apparently they’re supposed to represent the fans of the original game trying to keep the plot as it was before
And we just stripped it
@@kermitwithamustache3885 it goes further than representing the fans...as whispers are mentioned in Dirge, in Flower Maiden, in case of lifestream, and described in case of shinra. In flower maiden they are mentioned by name, described in color (those that Aerith has shared her feelings with and sent to find Cloud turn pink in color), and identified as cetra in the lifestream. In case of Shinra, Rufus finds himself inexplicably unable to move and hearing his name called out, forcing him to get geostigma. In kids are alright, rufus describes finding himself compelled to places for reasons beyond his comprehension. In Dirge, Reeve describes the ending of ff7 remake...in 2006. Specifically, the sound every night of a thousand wailing souls at a specific time. This event is when the whispers go from swarming the shinra building to attacking Sephiroth.
And aerith herself describes the same sound as "the cries of the planet." So that puts them in every game.

There are a few other explanations, however. Remake's accessory media (the books like World Preview) paints the whispers as planetary defensive mechanism, similar to Semi-Weapons like Chaos and Omega, Weapons like Diamond (Midgar fight), Jade (killed by Turks in Exile on day of First Reactor Bombing in the town of Icicle Inn, and released due to the summoning of Zirconiade), Ruby (extra optional boss in FF7 US/Euro releases), Emerald (Undersea), Sapphire (Junon battle) and Ultima (multiple encounters). As such, the whispers are potentially created as a direct response to someone interfering with time, which implies they did not exist before that point. The Arbiter boss's description in game also supports this concept. The person directly responsible for that interference is located in the Arbiter's chest so take a good look to see who is changing destiny. It's post-Advent Children's Sephiroth, who then goes and jumps us months into the future in order to EAT the METEOR... This significance of this is in Case of Lifestream White and Black (like the portals), also it means that we'll probably never Meteor again, at least not in the same way. "Careful, Cloud, that which lies ahead does not yet exist."
Aerith's own explanation within Remake after she herself gains knowledge of them (in the beginning she can't see them until touching Cloud, where her eyes go big, her jaw drops and she says "What...are they?") as the events leading to the pillar occur, Enigmatic whispers, which are pink like the 'whispers' in the Flower Maiden (which is a color they turn into after she conveys her feelings and desire to find and protect Cloud to them), do not ever attack the party. Enigmatic whispers permit you to attack the regular whispers by letting you beat them up, which in turn makes the others vulnerable. During the trip from the train graveyard to the pillar, they appear in increasing number. If you focus your play on Aerith, you'll see when they appear they 'attack' Aerith for no damage or indication by circling her...and then they just kinda hover and watch but they linger near Aerith and watch Cloud. After several of these have 'touched' Aerith, she begins finishing sentences but also seems to have a very 'definitive' view of the outcome in which it would be very bad. Aerith then talks about "not wanting to look back on this day and wish I did something different," as if this might have been the feeling that was conveyed to her by the enigmatic whispers.

Then there's the one in remake that's supported by ALL the FF7 compilation including the original and the books.
Toward the climax of final battles in Remake, the whispers' scream... (from when they launched a futile attack on Sephiroth only to get sucked into a portal that, after several battles, allows Sephiroth to LAUNCH whispers as an attack against Cloud; triggering the jump to the 'edge of creation'), Aerith refers to that scream as "the cries of the planet."
Reeve describes the same scream in Dirge as the "Howling of a thousand souls," and refers to the location as "Coming from the Shinra HQ" and the time as "Every single night at the same time" which began "after the mass disappearance in Junon" in which the official number was a little over a hundred people...and the real number was over a thousand people that "just disappeared."
This leads us to the final possible explanation to the Whispers..
In Dirge of Cerberus, they are potentially a little over a thousand Junon citizens that randomly disappeared sometime after Advent Children, 'repurposed' to protect the timeline. There is a five-minute monologue in which Reeve is literally describing the final moments of 2020's FF7 Remake prior to the use of the portal, alongside the 'truth' of the Junon disappearance, (in a game released in 2006 and in the remake's ultimania, Nomura said that the plans for the remake were made alongside Dirge and Crisis Core but put on hold due to lack of people to work on it. I genuinely suspect it's actually because dirge didn't sell well.) Dirge also has frequent appearances of the same black portal that Sephiroth uses to trap the whispers that attacked him, which randomly suck people in.
So there's all the possibilities so far.

Well, if we are fully strict this is more of a sequel to Advent children in someway, cause the ending implies that all what we saw in the of game and movie did happened already
Beat the game last night after 50+ hrs on Normal. Immediately jumped right back in for more.
I haven't done that since the original Kingdom Hearts.
I absolutely love this game and I'm excited for what the next part(s) hold.

I honestly don't see how seeing Jessie's gloves and headband on the table implies that she's alive at all. In fact, to me it implied the exact opposite. It seems that Biggs kept them as a memento, nothing more. It's pretty common for people to do that. Seems to suggest that she very much is dead.
That would make sense but the other possible implication is she pulled him out the rubble and hes at her house

I still don’t know how I feel about them going in this new direction, but I’m cautiously optimistic.
After FF15 and KH3 I don't trust them.
Think of it as a sequel within the original. Afterall, everything Sephiroth does implies he'd been through advent children and seen everything. Plate falls, "You failed, again." Aerith, though not from the future, is at one point finishing the sentences of others as if knowing exactly what they are going to say, but here too she changes events that the whispers allow to an extent. Sephiroth random line during the final battles, "I know your future."
@@Koniving it's more like a reboot I don't understand why people are thinking it's a sequel. They did mention this is the future. Meaning the events didn't happen. ( However the rely way to much on the original story, that Nomura bad writing ).
@@RIELTURO because Sephiroth and Aerith are fully aware of the original story (and the entire compilation except Dirge of Cerberus). Aerith is progressively more aware by the plate and fully aware by Shinra hq. Sephiroth is fully aware from the very beginning. Everything Sephiroth is doing is to steer the original events so far out of whack that he can get the whispers out in force. With every little change is a ripple and the whispers can't undo everything. That's why it's a sequel, because Sephiroth's story continues from the original compilation.
Those events "didn't happen yet", for everyone but Sephiroth. Also Seph says "I have seen your future.". Not his, not "ours", but "your future". Meaning it is not his future.

Hmm guess I won't get to experience the original story unless I play the original game. That's fair I guess, but I was hoping that I'd finally understand why people loved it so much back then, I regret never playing it as a kid.

on the flipside i couldnt give a shit about this remake because i knew it would be trash, but the concept of this being a timeloop sequel rather than a remake has me very intrigued.
I advise to play it with a spoiler free guide. It is easy to get lost, especially if you take a multi day break from playing. Imo best way to get a full experience without missing too much

Ah, so the Whispers are trying to keep all the events on the same tracks as the original game. I did not know that as I only ever played the remake and not the original. I guess now we can say that the remake is like a parallel universe where things happened similarly but different.

I know I am late to the party but I see the whispers as a way to show fans that this story is a new alternative and not something trying to overwrite the original. By defatting the whispers the new story can go on its own path and be separate from the OG as in universe both new and old are different paths

Silent Swordsman on the contrary. Now everything is up in the air and anything can happen. This opens up brilliant possibilities and if you’re a fan of the original then it’s still relevant as its own story. Remake is almost like a sequel.
Barrett dies and pops back up like nothing death indeed means nothing we saw death happen and If SE wants to do any other befoolery they can because of this horrible plot device.

Obviously as a new fan of the series who was introduced to FF7 with the remake I’m ok with the changed because with fresh eyes it worked perfectly but I could see how fans of the original would be upset

Not my first rodeo with Final fantasy but I will say I for one am excited for this development. Considering there is an aspect of choice my impression for the next game is they are gonna play that up more. Meaning perhaps in this next game. Characters who were "supposed to die" could still die based on our decisions. I don't know whats worse a character dying because of linear story. Or dying because of something g you the player decided.
Because the deaths in the original are real tragedies that gv powerful impact to the story. In this new one, I am just hoping it will not be turned into another KH plot armor.

The new game is cool, mostly because of the visuals and gameplay. But when you consider how much they have changed the story, it's not even really a remake anymore.
It thinks it's intended as a different kind of "re-make", i.e. they recreated the game, but they did not choose to create a 100% identical copy of the original.

FF7 Remake is not a re-make, but a sequel. FF7 Remake is not a description of what the game is, It's what's happening in the story. Things are getting re-made.
It is a sequel. Think of it as a repeated timeline loop. Everything that happened in original FF7 is still canon, that's why Sepiroth and Aerith gives us clues that they already experienced it and reliving it again, and why Cloud gets a glimpse of the "future", because he's actually recalling the "past" that already happened. The whispers prevent fate from being changed, but we know FF7R already thwarted some of those. The remake's theme is rebelling against fate.
I'm pretty sure Aerith won't die this time, or that she dies (to experience it firsthand) but they'll go back and prevent it from happening again. We already got Zack alive, revealing that parallel timelines exist.
I don't get how the Avalanche trio can live after a freaking pillar collapse. It makes no sense.
Not just the trio, but according to "The Kids Are Alright," EVERYONE dies when the pillar collapses in the original. In the remake, people above the plate survive, people below the plate survive... and to top it all off, Cait Sith's behind the scenes doing shit.
I was so happy when I found out that Biggs was alive, I was hoping for Jessie to be alive as well, I can only hope.

I’m happy we’re not just getting another telling of the story with better graphics. Nearly everyone who is picking up the game knows the classic story and for the ones who haven’t they can go back and play the original game as it’s still replayable today

This is one of the things that i disliked the most. Barret journey in og ff7 is motivated mostly by the death of his comrades, it's a significant part of his development as character.
What if, in a count of monte cristo remake, Edmond doesn't go to jail or doesn't lose Mercedes? Could he be considered the same Edmond in the end?

Barret doesn’t know that Biggs and Jesse? is (are) still alive. They don’t know what happened to Wedge either, so the circumstances are still similar. This is purely speculation, but they might’ve been saved just to be killed off later in the story

Coming here during Chapter 13, rightfully confused because of the new additions.
I was very open to the whispers, but in endgame it got outright frustrating that whatever happened, the group didn't solve anything, all conveniently the whispers showed up and done everything. Oh, there's a major threat to one of the members of the group? Whispers time! Oh, the escape of the group is in jeopardy? Whispers time! A fight is going against the group? Yupp, you guessed it, whispers time!
TBF that was the plot. That now they CAN alter the fate after beating the whispers.

My one big nit pick. Why show sephiroth so early? The scene in the shrina simulation room was incredible and would have been a better introduction to sephiroth than so early on.

my guess is that durring the final fight with Sephirot from the original ff7, when he use supernova, some weird shit happen to the timeline that created the whisper. that, or the whisper is the soul of the dead people from the original timeline, trying to make sure thing turn out the way it supposed to so that this timeline may also be save
But I think Shinra will be involved somehow. If you remember those hooded figures are pictured amongst whispers in some visions, like they are part of them, or shinra's attempt to influence the whispers. I think it's Shinra, because the numbers on their shoulders suggest they are test subjects. Yeah, actually now thinking about it, perhaps the whispers appeared, so Shinra tried to turn humans into whispers so they can gain influence / control over them.
After not playing FF7 since maybe 22 years ago it's a trip seeing stuff and thinking, tf did this happen and I forgot about it

Zack probably still dies. The way he encounters the Shinra soldiers is the same way in Crisis Core. The scene after the fight when he walks with Cloud towards Midgar is also in the original FF7. In both Crisis Core and OG7, Zack is gunned down by three Shinra soldiers. It is likely Zack still dies and we will probably see it in the next episode.

I heard that the story is different than the original before I started playing the remake. Was curious about the differences between the two stories after beating the game.
There are also little changes like in Remake Don always pick Cloud as a bride while in original, depending on the choice, it can be Tifa and Aerith as well.
I'm not convinced Zack is alive. He could just be gravely wounded and collapses later (to be seen in the next game I assume). But the biggest drawing point is the Buster Sword. If Zack is alive, how does Cloud have it? The description for the Buster Sword is a bit telling as well.

And Tifa might die instead. This will drive Cloud to push through with saving the world. Either that, or they all lose to Sephiroth. Then Aerith & Zack realize somehow that they need to die to save the world. That one reality where they win.

No. What happened in KH3 was fan service. This on the other hand is... well I don’t know what this is. Cause they could definitely just not kill Barrett or Wedge or Zack or Biggs and Jessie if they really wanted to. I don’t understand the point of a remake if you have to make a plot device for a meta effect on how the story progresses. Like you’re writing the story.

The whispers are the only thing I really hated. They're like a lazy way to make excuses in the plot for something not happening. I'm just glad they're going to be gone in the 2nd part.
You have no guarantee. You want them to be gone but who would've thought they'd be there in the first place when it's out of character for the OG? I don't think we can make any assumptions at this point.
my impression was that they were a new major part of the story. hated them. i thought their design doesn;t even match the game.
@@ghostbaum I think the Whispers are the OG FF7 fans or OG FF7 Dev team. Some of the parts of the game, they were out of place but overall, a solid 9/10 for me.
I'm pretty sure the whispers were meant to be caricatures of FF7 purists who wanted the game to be absolutely the same and would hate and resist any deviations, and I think the whole plot about the whispers was meant to be a statement against those FF7 purists. I do agree with the idea behind it, cause I think the purist attitude is stupid but yeah, that was probably one of the silliest additions to the remake.
I think the whispers are too blatant I could be considered a purist but I wouldn’t have minded changes so much is if they are grounded within the continuity (Cloud beats Reno in the duel then runs off with Aerith ) nope Cloud and Aerith are carried away by ghosts) why because plot device (Barrett is killed by sephiroth suddenly pops back up ) this isn’t even creative storytelling at the least everything else in the game I loved even the padding .

Guys, Zack living is an alternate timeline. It will have its own game, a sequel to Crisis Core that shows us what would've happened if Zack made it to Midgar. That shit will PRINT money.

As much as I want to avoid alternate timeline BS, I don't think the ending suggests that Zack is alive in the FF7R timeline but it opens up the idea that Zack might have survived in a different FF7 timeline since the whispers are gone.
While the game IS incredible and I love the expansions made on the Midgar section, I really hate this multiverse shit. The Avalanche crew dying had weight to it. Their deaths, along with others, is part of why the original story hit so hard. Square keeping people alive feels like a real disservice to the story and new players experiencing it for the first time.
How can someone be this heartless? Telling people who waited over a decade you're going to grant their wish and at the very end being like...nah, we might ditch your favorite story after all. No matter how "meta" it was, fictional characters "fated to defy fate" is a bad concept anyway because it's self-contradicting and introduces a theme that implodes logically, like a square circle. The game was soooo gooood up until they introduced a non-sensical theme purely for shock value.

I see what you mean, and you totally have your right for your own opinion. At first I was indifferent because I really wanted everything exactly how it was. Now, I’m actually really happy about this! Everything is completely new and I realized I want to see new. I think this was absolutely a perfect way to handle a remake
They had to make it like that because on their perspective, if you want the original story, then go play OG FFVII. This is another type of story telling and most of the fans or players love it.

I think the true villain of FF7 Remake will either be Genesis, Minerva, or Weiss. They do reference the Dirge of Cerberus ending (technically just DoC in general) after the Failed Experiment fight, but Cloud probably isn't worrying about that right now.
@death sparrow No I think he’ll still be the villain, just not the final boss of the game. Sephiroth is already crazy, so not much can be done unless Square magically just places Hojo, Lucrecia, Sephiroth, and Vincent in one room to spend some family time together lol.
They're just going to undo everything aren't they? They are going to give us the Star Wars sequel trilogy treatment. Change stuff, undo the stuff people loved in the first place, tear it apart, redo it in some out-of-touch way that they want, then the fans get blamed. They seem to be cramming in all this happy ending nonsense, Aerith is probably not going to die, some other character probably will instead, and everything will get convoluted as shit, even more so than it already was. The whispers thing was seriously dumb and I was facepalming during the last couple of hours of the game. They also gave Sephiroth the Kylo Ren treatment - we've already beaten him, so until he pulls some "this isn't my final form" shit he isn't going to be a credible threat. I thought the combat was great, the bosses were awesome, the motorcycle sequences have already become some of my favorite gaming moments (they should have ended it after the motorcycle escape sequence, as the party ventures into the open world), the voice acting was on-point and the remastered OST was beautiful. But I am dreading what they're about to do to the story. All I can do is hope I'm pleasantly surprised.

@@danielhao5790 I played the original and prefer the original so far because the side quests made no sense and no character and seemed to add fluff but also understand that making it 100 percent the same would be counter productive. Yeah. The dementors are us with a preconceived notion of what this game should be (because everyone has wanted a remake not steering away from story, and were promised such by SE in past interviews). We/dementors want the story the same, but and fight to keep it such. Over the course of the game, us/dementors are fought and lose, allowing the characters/SE to go their own narrative direction. It's a low-tier plot device that comes out of nowhere (because it's just an artificial plot device) so that SE can slap a FF7 skin on the game they really wanted to make. Why? Because most of their narrative games in past decade have sucked, and they don't want to risk a new story without pulling in nostalgia to help with sales.

I just finish the remake. I never played the original. I ended being disappointed. The game was great but on the final chapters everything was so confuse. The main plot of a rebel group fighting a big corporation goes to trash in favor of a fight with this sephirot dude who they never explain why is so important. His conexion with cloud. All the people who seem dead ended being alive. The whispers seems to appear to stop any real drama. The stakes goes to the toilet. Then zack appears and who is he? What is this game? What iam playing? Maybe the original was a great story but this isnt. I am not excited at all to know whats going to happen next. This is not a remake is a sequel in alternate timeline. They leave new players out with this. Is like seing back to the future 2 before the first one
Ya they expect you to be completely aware of the original story to pick up on how things aren’t quite right , like sephiroth showing up early and knowing who cloud is and trying to influence him - shows that sephiroth is aware of the time loop and is trying to do things differently.
They however don’t explain any of this and leave it up to the audience entirely

Im really liking how they are changing this story. How its not a shot by shot remake but taking liberties to create more different timelines to keep the game fresh for new and old fans.
But what i dont like is making the game feel like filler compared to the original. We have to wait for the other parts for ua to get the story? Idk...maybe because they are going on a new direction its kinda like making a new game.

Aerith won't die. That was the whole point of the whispers, and us killing the Fate boss.
I also think they might go with the Zack being alive thing, but that would be too much for my taste. Changing the future by killing that fate thing makes sense but changing the past just feels a bit too stretched. I also didn't like that everyone in avalanche survived. I thought the whole point of developing the characters more was to make their deaths more impactful when they happened. By the end it just felt like they were trying to have their cake and eat it too.
Yeah it's starting to feel like dragonball, it's hard to care about any 'tragic' moment because you pretty much know for a fact they are just gonna have them resurrected before lunch. I'm not surprised though, Japanese game dev teams can't tell a coherent story to save their lives. Narrative always goes out the window in favour of letting them cram in as much fanservice as possible, and going for weird high concept stories that just don't make sense when you take more than a few seconds to think. It's a shame, because I thought the writing in the first half of this game was fairly solid, but they dropped the ball, as expected.
I liked demo but Im dissapointed when I started to play full version O .o they have changed a storyline... it pissed me off. Fuck Square-enix!!! Long live Squaresoft.
I can handle most all of the changes except the Whispers/Fate/Destiny/TimeTravel garbage. That crap killed the whole game for me. Characters that are supposed to die, should die. Now if you want to switch it up a little bit like they did with President Shinra? That's fine man. Have him hanging off the edge of the building but get up have his little extra dialogue and then be killed by the piece of Jenova that looks like Sephiroth. Totally fine with that! What's NOT COOL, is stabbing Barrett but he's still magically ALIVE because "it wasn't his time". That shit is total !@#$% garbage! REALLY!? So I could just keep stabbing myself in the gut if I wanted because it's "not my time"? What kind of STUPID ASS SHIT IS THAT!?!? BUT OH!!! I guess now I gotta be careful if I die because we defeated FATE/DESTINY and now anything can happen! And the Sephiroth we see isn't the Sephiroth waiting up at the Northern Crater waiting on the Black Materia. It's the Sephiroth that's already summoned METEOR, became Safer Sephiroth and failed. But...he didn't fail because he sees the future of his defeat somehow...

Also those visions that you have while fighting the huge boss before Sephiroth was the original game! Because we beat the ghosts those visions will now not come true like they are supposed to! I just don't get who this is for? Everyone I knew who loved FF7, hated the remake kingdom hearts shit. Everyone I know who didn't play FF7, were so confused by the ending and asked me to explain it to them. The only people who don't hate it are people who played the original, but could take it or leave it. That's your audience now SE.

@@theredpriest That's the worst part. We were told we were going to get to play FF7 again, then the game comes out and it's great. They even get character stuff right (like barret being a softy pretending to be a hardass or cloud being a dork pretending to be a badass). We have faithful re-imaginings of every enemy and Eligor and Hell House got upgraded to boss. The ATB system is great as it divides up normal combat and the more flashy attacks. All of this goodness had me feeling like I was a kid again...
They wait until my defenses are down and take a shit on my childhood. The worst part? You know this is going to be FF7 from now on. This is the version SE will use and reference. I will never buy another SE game ever again.
I agree with you completely, it seems today it's impossible to ask for a cohesive, functioning plot and characters. Every director/writer/publisher needs needlessly to shit in the product they are making, so that you can taste, who made it.

Yes and no? You will experience the original story, which is amazing. Then after finishing the remake you will end up with more questions than answers. I would also recommend watching/playing crisis core and watching Advent Children. After doing that the remake takes a different “meaning”
There is some alteration to story, cutscenes, mini games.. and also secondary but forgettable char is bringed to life in this part 1 remake.. and alternate of story about some plot too which is completely different from original game

I HIGHLY doubt that. Would also totally NOT fit his character. A much more fitting end than just "kill the psycho" would be... acceptance?
A problem with Sephiroth has always been that he couldn't accept defeat, death, being less than perfect etc. That's why he's such a threat and why he keeps coming back in advent children.
What would make a really cool ending imo, is when it would lead to him finally accepting that he's not a god, has no right to PLAY god and that he has to accept death once it claims him and can finally rest in the lifestream. This would build a very nice atmosphere for a final battle, since the player would get closure that once he beats Sephiroth there, he will really, finally be dead, and in some way, also saved.
It would also offer a very good opportunity to bring Genesis back into the picture, since he has always been one of Sephiroth's strongest influences to becoming what he did.

I don't get why they remake things to change them like the new graphics are cool, and I like the way it looks but changing it is odd to me because we all loved the original game, and the story was already so awesome. The changed make sense but, I feel like some of them are not needed it makes me feel conflicted about the game especially since it ends after midgar are they planning to remake the rest of the game cause I'm not gonna even play the new one if it's not the full deal

I honestly think Jessie is dead. The other 2 survived but she is gone. If everyone is going to survive this timeline going forward, it will be very boring.
Also if Sepiroth is even more powerful then the original timeline because he now somewhat has the ability to alter timelines, then he's doing a very bad job considering more of the original team are alive.

i think its a betrayal of its source material and identity ....its not supposed to be a spider man multiverse story ..and i wont be playing any further installents. but then its not for us original fans, its for new fans who wont respect its source material..and youtubers on here moan about the witcher not following its source materal but activly praise this for exactly that!. this is just a money spinner by Square Enix but thats the whole point of making games is to sell them and make money i guess, good luck to them but its not for me anymore.

i've played the original 4 times over the years at different times. the midgar section isn't this long. this remake is so dragged out with so much filler. i like the remake but it feels so half-assed.
@@ghostbaum They need to add filler for expanded content. I don't remember finishing disc 1 for 5 to 6 hours, maybe I need to play it again. Hopefully FF7R part 2 will expand the world map.
@@ghostbaum yeah even some parts of the game are too long. Like the reactor 5 part where you must get keycard to disarm the airbuster or the slum with Aerith to get to sector 7 that robot arm was long and boring.

If the interference of the whispers frustrated you at any point in the game then reevaluate lol the whole point is that the developers want to go in a new direction and write a new future with these characters but purists who want it “exactly the same” are the ones preventing that. Reevaluate your place in the new story if they are frustrating you because yeah people who throw a tantrum over the new direction do the story frustrate me too. The enemy of the remake is literally the purist fans who refuse to explore new stories and just want the same thing repeated forever.
Perhaps the worst thing about this new remake is the pacing considering it bogs down in a few sections. And the introduction of the whispers. I don't find it very creative to make these entities called whispers in order to dictate what they need the plot to do and I feel like square swindled all the Final Fantasy fans who were anxiously awaiting what they thought was the original Final Fantasy VII done up with a new beautiful graphics makeover. They've proven they can do it, they just chose to build towards something new and different with it. This has caused mixed results considering some fans are going to be thrilled, have mixed feelings, and/or others severely disappointed. I fall in the camp of mixed feelings. What we got is not what I was hoping for but I do admit the remake was interesting and I'm curious to see where this crazy train we are on leads. It's really out of our hands, we just have to wait and see how the story turns out in the future episodes

Sorry not buying it... the history & the high status of said character deserves the wait, deserves the build...it's what made the original such a masterpiece.
I knew somehow Square would goof it up... they are not the same company that made this game in 1997...just like EA isn't the same company & they should give up the NFL license ... next square will find a way to incorporate Spongebob into the game as a summons

I hate how the crew does not get captured in Shinra HQ and then they get released only when Sephiroth appears. Shinra appear so weaker in Remake, especially since you defeat Turks with just Cloud. Also, following blood trail to killed president was one of the iconic scenes and the new changes fail in comparison.
Time ghosts a fake remake that is actually a sequel. People actually let the se marketing department get away with this shit. The game is now going to be part of the kingdom hearts mcu. This game was one biggest scams and psyops in history. Lied too and scammed and its given 10/10. Fuck this shit.

I have no problem with all the changes to the story. What I do have a problem with is the shear padding of the game just to extend the length of a rather short game without the padding. Showing that the game DID NOT have to be just Midgar and the game was just a cash grab. The game seems rushed with all its copy and paste assets as well as the recycled low definition textures throughout the game.
I would have liked the game much more if they cut all the filler and all those excess fights and just focused on the story. square enix is definitely a half-ass group.
