It's crazy how the dynamics of the rematch in 1999 evolved. In this 1996 World Series, the Braves were heavily favored being the more experienced team with lots of talent and coming off a championship. They took a 2-0 series lead and everyone thought that was it for the Yankees. Fast forward 3 years and the Yankees were the favorites over the Braves, having won 2 in the last 3 years. Only difference is the Yankees finished the job in 4 games unlike the Braves in 1996. Being a Yankees fan I thought the Braves would put up a tougher battle in 1999, but not to be.
That '99 NLCS really tired them out. The Mets gave them a run for their money and tired the hell out of their bullpen after being down 3 games to 0 and then forcing a Game 6.
I remember being 10 years old watching this with my Pop Pop and crying because I was so happy they won the World Series. It changed the whole trajectory of my life.
This series made me a Yankees fan. They looked so outmatched in Games 1 and 2. Was unreal how they came back in Game Three after being so close to an 0-3 hole. Then they ran the table.
I remember bumping into a Braves fan( I assume he was )& he pretty much said the Braves were going to win the Series easily after they won the 1st two & I jokingly kinda said that the Yankees could still come back although I sorta did feel at that moment that the Yankees somehow still had a chance. Welp.....we know how it turned out. 🙂
Jim Leyritz's 3 run home run in the 8th to tie it is one of the most important home runs in Yankees history. So underrated too. If he doesn't hit that home run or the Yankees don't score those 3 runs, they likely would have gone down 3-1 in the series.
Back when starting pitching was epic. Also the 90s were the last great decade when fans would pay attention to the game without smartphones and social media.
After the Braves won the first two games I went online to an Atlanta newspaper. The reporter said that the Yankees didn't belong on the same field as the Braves. Then he wrote that maybe the 1927 and 1961 Yankees didn't either. After each of the next four games his tune changed a whole lot.
The Braves have had a lot of postseason disappointments over the years but nothing is worse than this World Series. Atlanta literally just won a World Series six months ago and this choke job still bothers me.
It was absolutely shocking to see them utterly and suddenly collapse. They were THE team to beat, they began to prove it, winning first 2 in NY, and ready to go up 3-1 in the Series, and then...complete and utterly failure. I'm still confused! How could this happen? The sports world accepted this sudden turn of events WAY too easily! I am an Indians fan-- I also loves the Braves A LOT because of TBS, but I'm a Clevelander so the Tribe was always my #1-- and so when the Braves took down our MIGHTY Indians in 95 for their first title, I thought for sure they would cruise and give the Yankees a sound whooping, and was looking forward to seeing it. Very disappointed to see this happen, both because I still liked the Braves (despite 95) and I hated the Yanks (wanted the Yanks to get that same taste of WS defeat that the Indians got from the Braves in 95). Who woulda thunk that 95 would be the ONLY title for the 90s Braves, and it was against EASILY their stiffest competition (and the only year I wanted the Braves to lose while I rooted for them every other year!) Baseball World Series: VERY unpredictable!
I was 20 years old watching this World Series. As a Yankees fan since childhood it was the first championship I was able to experience. And it began the start of a wonderful run.
I think about Strawberry and Gooden who were on this team and also on the 86 Mets. Down the first two games of the WS and then come back to win. 10 years apart, both for NY teams. But then Wade Boggs being on the losing end ten years earlier.
@beatzbyjay24 They're both very good. Buck has a much better announcer's voice and style, but Costas is much more knowledgeable of baseball and baseball history (thus, I personally give a slight edge to Costas, but both are excellent).
The Yankees of old had just a different temperament about them a different character about them then most teams they went through a lot of stuff back then but they always persevered through everything they were a resilient team I can’t say that about today’s Yankees with all due respect to them because they’re pretty good team but they don’t have the character of those great Yankees teams and that’s why they don’t win as often that’s my point of view as a Yankee fan
Also helped that they had a manager who wasn't actively mismanaging games and thinks having the players watch the footage of the 2004 choke job is a good way to motivate them... It'll take more than a title for Boone to make up for these.
@@DMallthewayAND up 6-0 LATE in Game 4! AND being defending champs, the better and more experienced team. Makes little sense how they blew this after beating a MUCH better team in the Indians in 1995 to finally get the monkey off their back. One Would have thought they would CRUISE to a title this year and perhaps some other years, too. Baseball playoffs-- SO unpredictable and can change so very easily.

They were calling themselves the team of the decade before they were beaten twice by the team of the century.
That '99 NLCS really tired them out. The Mets gave them a run for their money and tired the hell out of their bullpen after being down 3 games to 0 and then forcing a Game 6.

Could use some of this magic right now
As a Yankee fan still my favorite World Series win out of the 5 since this one
You guys gotta make more of these
Definitely I agree these are invaluable
Torre told George, don't worry well win the next 4. Yanks were unstoppable those years

Oh they were talking major smack. Then got swept in their own house.

I agree, especially winning the first 2 in New York, the Jim Leyritz bomb changed the whole series

the entire Yankees postseason was nuts in 1996. best/most exciting baseball i've ever seen
The start of a Dynasty
im still pissed they tore down the old stadium.
And the sudden and shocking thwarting of another would-be dynasty.
After over 40 years in the vending business, my best event ever. Working at the Old Stadium for 15 years, it was nice seeing my own dynasty!!!

Awesome 👍👍 series since then finish my military 🪖🪖🪖🎖️🎖️ career in 2009 loss 14 family members including MOM DAD REST IN POWER TO ALL SEE U SOON
When starting pitching was great
Game 4 of this series began the transference of the title of "Team of the 90s."
Exactly what I'm looking for❤!!!!
Joe Buck still sucks 25 years later.
Nah, he's pretty good. Like his Pops.
Nah Joe buck is better than bob costas.
@beatzbyjay24 They're both very good. Buck has a much better announcer's voice and style, but Costas is much more knowledgeable of baseball and baseball history (thus, I personally give a slight edge to Costas, but both are excellent).
Thx for upload 🙂
The braves needed a better bullpen and a legit closer and they would have won more than one World Series.
I remember watching this with my mom when I was about 13
I was 13 too

They had toughness, and a team mentality. Unlike the bums of the last decade who can't even win a division.
Also helped that they had a manager who wasn't actively mismanaging games and thinks having the players watch the footage of the 2004 choke job is a good way to motivate them...

The steroids didn’t hurt either
100% agree
I wish Aldrete was Mattingly
crazy how the braves blew the series after being up 2-0
And winning the first 2 at the Bronx

New Yorkers whistle
This bears no resemblance to the crap MLB offers today. Thanks for posting.
Braves need some payback even after just winning last season.
I still can't believe the yankees beat the braves the braves had the best team in all pitching hitting and great defense
They completely blew this... still shocking to see it suddenly unravel. Something happened on the way to their dynasty.
braves should’ve won this series :(
I’m a Yankees fan
@@jacobstopper3804 braves fan here
@@FleecyElf I can see that
But they didn't
