Another great poet profile! The debate over the quality of Oliver's poetry is both interesting and aggravating. It's too accessible?! And a surprise cameo by Maureen Corrigan, too. Yay!

It’s very frustrating that some in academe insist on this idea that if it’s accessible, it’s not good poetry! How ridiculous! She speaks to millions of people in a very powerful way!

I too find a lot of comfort in nature. These are wonderful poems. Very interesting to hear about the poet, too.

Thank you for sharing this! I read Devotions a few years ago. It was my first experience with Mary Oliver and I loved it!

Isn't she wonderful? She doesn't get enough credit, and I'm disturbed by how some in the academic world have regarded her. I think she's wonderful. And she has made poetry accessible to a lot of people who might not otherwise read it. Thank you for commenting on these videos!

    That was just beautiful, Pat.
"Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it."
Yesterday, on a walk through woods with my dog Maggie, I noticed a multitude of yellow flowers, close to the ground, each having 6 long and pointed petals. Every other petal curled backward. The leaves hugged the ground, were mostly green, but mottled with a purplish brown color. When I got home I looked it up in my Audubon "Field Guide to North American Wildflowers, Eastern Region," and I found it! My humble, but stunningly beautiful and complex little flower is called the Trout Lily. It astonished me and I'm taking advantage of this opportunity you've given me to tell about it.

I didn’t know the Norma Millay connection - now it makes sense. I mean, why her work is a cut above. It reminds me of Beckett going to Joyce.

I don't know much about poetry, but I do LOVE these segments! I look forward to hearing your poetry selections everyday. These were particularly beautiful and enjoyable! Can't understand the criticism - isn't poetry supposed to be simple and sentimental? Anyway, keep bringing us the good stuff!

Aww thank you, Reney, for this lovely comment. I think Mary Oliver is/was an American icon and treasure. One of the wonderful things about her is that she made poetry accessible to everyone, even to people who think that they don't like or understand poetry. There's this sense, I guess, in some parts of academe, that poetry should be hard, obscure, more complicated. I don't know. Thank you for watching these poetry bits and for leaving me such a lovely comment, my friend.
