I'm early in my PhD journey Dr. Guy, but already reading a ton of books related to my dissertation topic (as you recommend...even though I have lots of articles saved in Refworks too!). My question for you to cover sometime in office hours would be: how do I know what to glean from these books as I'm reading so early in my PhD process? Should I take notes? Enter quotes in my excel lit. matrix? Or am I just reading for general knowledge and understanding of the seminal theories related to my dissertation? (Sorry- that's 4 questions.) :)
They were some helpful insights from Hyaatt. Especially getting to know one's disciplines formatting style. As an undergrad I took mine on a study break to a backpackers by the beach for three days~ nerd! I found it helped me to pay more attention to details, to slow down, to develop discipline and to gain insight into how to write better. As a metaphor, I think of formatting style as the 'secret handshake' of a 'club' so we can regonsise valid writing and explanations. The student that takes the time to learn the style is acting the part of the professional they want to be.
What a great conversation for those approaching the dissertation process. Dr Guy, where's your ZOOM capabilities? It would have been even better to view Dr Hyatt as she shared her wisdom with you and your subscribers.
