Goalkeeper Training: How to Get Over the Fear of Diving and Weak side

  • A lot of goalkeepers and subscribers have been asking me for a video to help them overcome their fear of diving or the mental block/obstacle some keepers have when it comes to diving on their weakside.
    The way I teach my goalkeepers and how I taught myself how to get over my weakside mental block and how I overcame my fear of diving was by breaking down the steps of a goalkeeper dive.
    Into a few easy steps that are memorable and easily repeated,
    1. Keeper Ready position
    2. Lunge / Powerstep with the foot that is closest to the ball do not cross your body with your foot if you are making a power step.
    3. reach your arms out towards the ball get both hands on it in the W catch formation.
    4. place hands on ball and then push the ball out while pushing your chest over knee.
    Don't rush through this, take your time and help your body memorize the muscle movements necessary for a dive. All keepers should try this drill out every week or so to polish their diving technique and to remind themselves what a good dive looks and feels like.
    Hope this helps! Thanks for watching and commenting, make sure to leave me comments !!!

    That grass looks so nice to dive on. Over here in the UK, its all torn up with super dry mud which just eats through your skin...

    • @jrichmm2275
      @jrichmm2275 10 лет назад +7

      Where I play football in my street all the grass has been pulled out the ground because we always play on the same piece of grass

    • @ARSGoalkeeping
      @ARSGoalkeeping  10 лет назад +55

      It's okay, the real pain is the ground. our pitch is level and that grass is normal florida grass it's very long and weed like. so it makes bounces really weird and so on. Plus the field is COVERED in ant hills. nothing worse than getting fire ants in your gloves. But I'm happy to be training anywhere really! Hope your turfs improve

    • @Jakeydavee
      @Jakeydavee 10 лет назад +4

      My local field is relatively flat, occasionally you get those killer bounces which really annoy me. As a goalkeeper, I'm so used to diving on wet/muddy ground and when the summer comes around every year I begin to struggle again xD Here in the UK, 10/12 months consist of wet weather so it's kinda okay

      Zack Ashby thanks, im a 13 year old girl and im scared to dive high and dive on my weak side (left) but I keep
      trying to tell myself to just do it. Even tho I still can't get myself to do it, I will ever do it. Your comment motivated
      me, that's why I said "thanks." Unlike the guys being like: "you suck, you're never gonna be a good goalkeeper !! Hahahah!!!!"
      Btw, ive seen girls play football (or soccer) irl life, but ive never seen a girl goalkeeping irl life (only on yt and tv). I guess
      it's kinda rare then.... everyone just goes for skillmoves and scoring and stuff, nah..... I like saving my team more. Guys let's be
      honest, goalkeepers are REALLY REALLY important in football, and then they gonna hate on you because you didnt catch the ball...
      Do it yourself then. Stupid strikers lol. I just wanna say I have a long way to go to follow my dream, I'm not playing in a club but I just
      wanna be a pro and catch every ball so my friends get angry and run away and.. no that was weird bye XD.

Especially this video because it's just a simple drill that can get me diving and has slightly improved me but with lack of grass areas to practice on I cannot always practice or have people to practice with so when it comes to a game I lose all confidence.

    • @HoldFastGoalkeeping
      @HoldFastGoalkeeping 9 лет назад +2

      Connor Scott One thing you can do first is, get your left arm more coordinated. Your hands and arms move first before you dive, so you need to build response in your left hand. Playing basketball will help, or you can take a tennis ball and throw and catch only with one hand. Start throwing it soft, then harder and harder. After you get comfortable with that, throw the tennis ball low on the wall and get your body to react with your left side only.

    • @sixangrygoons

    I think it is also do with footwork and balance drills as well. If your work on your legs and like with weighted squats, lunges and jumping exercises this will improve your diving and other key areas as well and then you won't have a weak side, but at the end of the day the main thing is practice, If you just put in the hardwork in everyday you won't even think about it, it will just all click into place.

    I really enjoy your videos and i have practised a lot on me own. And a few days ago some friends asked me to play a game with them so i agreed and hoped that i wasn't terrible and that i wouldn't let them down. The match went quite well and my friends told me that i really should try out for the local soccer team (so i can get even better and train with them even if i don't get placed in a good team). But i'm 18 years old now so my question is would I be to old to still be a starting keeper or should i be fine and just have a go at things and see how it goes.
    Anyways keep up the great vids i learned a lot from them you really inspired me.
    Greetings from The Netherlands

    It's funny because when I think before I have to dive to my weak side (left) it hurts when I land maybe because I am a little scared of it and because of that mental block. But when I just don't think about it and just go for it, it doesn't hurt when I land because I land better when I am not overthinking it because I am so concentrated on the ball. But I want to not be scared and remove that mental block. I hope this helps, and a good job as always ARS Goalkeeping.

    A little tip (it worked for me)
    My weak diving side (left) use to stop me from diving and it made me loose a lot of games
    I managed to make it better by hitting me in my side not hard that it makes you cry but enough to make you man up

      +norace123 In futsal Diving is not same as normal Soccer..
      In fustal you just need to position your knee on the floor and get your hands lower...
      Goal is much much smaller..
