  • This video shows you how to retrofit an existing 3-way installation with an Alexa enabled Leviton Smart switch and Coordinating remote. The typical 3-way installations have a load connected to one switch and the line to the other switch, with a 3-wire traveler cable between both switches.
The Leviton documentation shows the line and the load connected to just the smart switch, with the traveler bypassing the 2nd switch. Although this may work, it is counter-intuitive and doesn't match the typical dumb switch arrangements. Leviton is renown for their confusing documentation for a dizzying array of switches, remotes and dimmers.
With some research in various Leviton documentation, I distilled it here in this video to show you how to do it with the more traditional arrangement of the load directly connected to one switch, and the line the other. I tested it on the plywood mock-up for demonstration purposes before installation. I also have a "photo-shopped" wiring diagram taken from the Leviton documentation showing the exact wiring used at the end of the video for your convenience.
Hope this helps you in your retrofit! See Part Numbers below:

Leviton 3 way smart switch wiring diagrams have been difficult for me to understand, all the brands are like this for some reason, nice to see that you have made it work AND make sense.

This was EXACTLY what I needed. Thank you for the photoshopped diagram.

For anyone searching for the dimmer version, the wiring is different. The Smart Dimmer goes on the load side. The Line, neutral and ground connect to the Smart Dimmer and DD00R. The red traveler serves as a communication line between the Smart Dimmer and multiple DD00R and is connected to the Yellow terminal.

What happens when you add additional switches? I think Leviton did the wiring that way to account for 3 or 4 switches.

Would have liked for you to show the actual wiring on your switches, since they are right there.

So far I've installed (2) 3-way Leviton Smart Switches at 2 different houses. I've always done it the way Leviton suggested.
1 thing I noticed is that the remote is not controlling the light, it's controlling the smart switch to the light. Basically it's telling the smart switch to turn the lights on or off. When that happens, the remote is silent. The "click sound" is only heard at the switch.
Question: When you wire it your way, do you only still hear the click sound at the switch, only at the remote, at both?

I'm about do to this same project. I was unaware of Leviton's wiring scheme though. I'm curious: why don't both switches have the green LED on? I would think that they would be on and at the same time.

Awesome set up, can you also do this with the D26HD dimmer in a 4 way with 2 DDOSR switches?

Yeah thats how i hooked it up too. Like your modified version. But thats how a normal 3 way is wired.. and its not working with these stupid switches.
