    Notice how Dr. J had plenty of room to spare when he dunked that ball! To me, he's STILL the best at combining jumping high AND far AND with grace, style and power.

      I agree. Jordan and others weren't intimidating like Erving was when they went to the basket. Dr. J was way ahead of his time. Even today no one can do some of the things Erving did 50 years ago on a basketball court.

    Dr J, when he was young! All the best leapers/highest touches in the NBA have standing reaches around 9 feet and max verticals near 12'6". Dr J was one of the first to be captured on video...but you had to be a fan in the 70s to see Doc in his prime. 80s Dr J, was old but still could out jump most of the young guys. Also, Dr J had some of the biggest hands in league history, which helps alot. Wayne Embrey, Noah Vonleh, Kawaii Leonard, and Air Jordan all have hands about the same size.

    • @JehovahJireh369
      @JehovahJireh369 2 года назад +1

      The hands thing is annoying. That's like saying Kareem and Shaq have long arms and legs since they are over 7 feet tall. Great athletes use their physical attributes. It's not what makes them great. Talent is what sets them apart.

    Kenai123 -- I was at that all star game at the Nassau Coliseum, sitting at foul line level watcing Dr. J essentially hurdle the Big O. As I recall, it wasn't really a "dunk" because angle he took to avoid Oscar meant his hand didn't touch the rim, but he more had a throw down. It was the only time I wished I was home to watch the replay. Absolutely AWESOME!

    Please stop it people. I'm from Chicago and watched the Pippen years. He was good all around player. However, Doctor J. was a first option player or "Number 1 option" on his team's. He's not in Julius's class, period! If Doctor J had won atleast two of those chips his teams should've won: (Portland series, L.A when Magic replaced Kareem at Center) he would be in many top 10 list. Dr. J is a legend who pushed the game forward. Only about 10 players can say that. What if the Doctor played in the modern era with an emphasis on weight training etc. He would be even more dominant! We would probably compare a Kobe to him more than Pippen! Peace and love from Chicago!

It was said Dr. J could not shoot but he shot 50.7%(Dr.J was known for dunking but all his shots were not dunks) while Pippen shot 47.3%. Dr.J avg'd 6.7 rebounds per game, Pippen 6.4. Pippen avg'd more assists with 5.2 to Docs 3.9 and more steals with 2.0 to 1.8. Dr.J avg'd 1.5 blocks to Pippen's 0.8. I would take Doc all day over Pippen.

    I remember watching that game on TV, and not believing what I had seen!.
    Julius actually did that dunk twice in a row during a 4th Quarter ABA rally that had them on pace to win.
    Then the aging Wilt Chamberlain came off the bench and blocked the Dr's next 2 dunk attempts, giving the NBA a narrow victory.

    • @danielp5317
      @danielp5317 3 года назад

      Wilt was already up their. Another incredible all time great. Wilt knew he had to come down even if Doc jumped 13 feet to the top of the backboard. He had to bring the ball back down to 10 feet at some point lol. But that woulda been a sight to see Wilt blocking 2 of docs dunks. I wonder if they were dunks started from under the basket as opposed to this clear for take off flight by doc on the unknown defender who came within a foot of docs dunk lol .

    • @tunanorth
      @tunanorth 3 года назад

      @@danielp5317 It was definitely a "clear for takeoff" on a fast break. Doc could plainly see Wilt was the only player between him and another dunk. In Doc's mind, nobody had ever been able to stop him from doing it before. In his defense, it was his first or second year in the ABA, he had never faced Wilt before, and knew that this was "Grandpa" Wilt. In his final two Laker years, Wilt was playing at around 315 very muscular pounds, and was certainly the strongest player in NBA history. His vertical was probably reduced a bit, but he still had that incredible length. It was a case of the [possibly] greatest dunker ever, against the [indisputably] greatest shotblocker ever.

    These top comments have a point but are missing the main factor in why these guys could dunking this. Doc was 6'7 and had a standing reach of 8'11. Pippen, despite what you hear, is only 6'7 as well. But has a 9'0 reach. Hmm jumps 12 inches to touch the rim. If he could do that, then he would only need about 18" to dunk. So if he could dunk while still above 18" in the air. Then it all makes sense for these guys to do this stuff
