Probably his most famous role is as Mr. Greenway (or whatever his name was) in Elf.
Not many people like this movie, but I genuinely like it
The problem with this movie is not that is bad, the problem is that, one, they kill the monster in the end, something that never should be allowed, and two, as always the U. S. blame someone else for the creation of Godzilla, Godzilla is a nuclear weapons allegory, that allegory would have worked better if the nuclear test were made in the Marshall Island instead of the French Polynesia, that would show that the U. S. created their own monster, but it was to much studio and military interference in this movie, they hadn't changed the script the movie would have been much better.
@@TheKeyser94 No it’s really bad.
@@ech78928 I like the design of this Godzilla, I wish that it was more like the Godzilla in the later films, you know, the indestructible machine that nearly non of human military weapons could destroy, not get me wrong, the original design is a classic, but this one actually look like an animal, luckily the animated series of this movie does a much better version of Godzilla than this movie.
@@TheKeyser94 un nl
@@TheKeyser94 I don't exactly get what you mean by killing the monster in the end. In Godzilla Vs Destroyah, they did kill Godzilla in the end anyways. Does it really matter if one country made it or not, the fact remains is that it was created either way and that people are dying because of the mistakes made by people.
I genuinely liked the movie. It was never meant to honor Godzilla, I like to think of it as a movie that tries to take a godzilla like creature and make it more scientifically plausible. No matter how big you are, you ain't gonna survive against 12 missiles.
Movies been out for over 20 years and this scene still gives me chills

I don’t care what anyone says I really liked this Godzilla it was the first one I actually watched and I still love it to this day. I really wish we could’ve had that sequel.
Godzilla the Series is a worthy successor that used a lot of the cancelled sequel’s story. Highly recommend if you haven’t seen it
@@Rikelsrunescape I'll say
My first movie was Godzilla's Revenge, which is probably the weirdest one in the whole franchise. 😆
It’s a great monster movie. It’s just not Godzilla. THIS LIZARD…. who eats fish lays eggs and runs from humans is a great monster. But the lizard is NOT Godzilla
@@ChaddMichael The lizard is called Zilla by the ones who made the original Godzilla, even though it aint a true godzilla it is still a respectable monster and its name is Zilla.
I was 9 years old, and this was one of the best experiences I remember having in movie theaters.
Years later, thanks to the internet, I found out about all the bad reviews, and it was very confusing, it still is to this day ...
It seems that people criticize this movie just for criticizing it ...
I'm not saying this is a perfect movie, but it's certainly a lot better than many people think.
This must be one of the most underrated movies ever, and it should be given a lot more credit.
People criticize it because it's disrespectful to godzilla's legacy it's not and shouldn't be confusing to see this movie was made by someone who didn't like godzilla had no respect for the source material and clearly this movie was a result of that. It's better as a monster movie it shouldn't be seen as a good godzilla movie
FrikiMonster...So very well said. I love this movie!!!
People where kinda just mad that this thing didn't really give out any of Godzilla's original traits like him being unpenetretable by missiles and stuff I get people why and how but yeah I agree on the other comment it's a nice stand alone monster movie but honestly it kinda gave out a The Beast from 20,000 fathoms remake vibe to it but yeah in the end of the day it's an enjoyable monster movie
Can someone explain how the movie was in 2000, and a character in it commented that it was almost worse than the Trade Center bombing?
@@Kaiju-bm4ts well actually they were going for a more realistic version like if Godzilla existed in our world he'd mostly be a dinosaur like creature acting on animal instincts
The dark rainy visuals of New York are so nostalgic and awesome to me. This movie had great atmosphere with it's destruction, sets and sense of scale.
People prefer other trash movies and rip off to this masterpiece.
I just can't understand why some people hate this movie.... This is really a good movie.
If you don't understand why fans hate this movie then all I can say is, watch any godzilla movie that properly respects godzilla and compare it to this one. You'll get your answer
@@Kaiju-bm4ts this movie gets the same treatment I gave it when the Eragon movie first came out. It's a good monster movie, not so much a Godzilla movie.
@@Kaiju-bm4ts I'd argue it's still better than the modern remake.
@@Kaiju-bm4ts I mean.... if u look at it strictly as: All godzilla movies should respect the og godzilla heritage, and evolve around that, then yes. I find it quite disrespectful. But this is a pretty damn good movie as its own spin off. U kinda empathize with the ANIMAL. This movie aint bout godzilla stomping on everything and everyone on his way to rule the world and subjugate the human raze as pets. Its bout human mistakes and its impact in the ecosystem. An animal, subproduct of nuclear testings, finding its place in earth, and humans struggling to stay as the apex species of the world. Pretty damn good movie. Not a good Godzilla movie, but a good movie, who happens to be named Godzilla
Because it's not Godzilla but a radio active Lizard. It's like Superman movie without Clark Kent.
When I was a kid, I didn't know why he felt that way about the coffee, now I live off coffee, and his attitude makes so much sense
Underrated movie. Not the best Godzilla movie by far, but not nearly as bad as people claim. I felt the filmmakers did a good job making you feel quite bad for the creature.
Tbh the cast was golden & it's in New York

I actually loved this movie.. later on all are just try to show off some Godzilla's macho power ..
This movie had a nice storyline with well crafted characters
I famously my village
And away from the original storyline. But yeah it does a good job anyhow... somewhat...
I agree, but I was actually hoping they'd make Godzilla an absolute macho nightmare in the 2014 movie, but it ended up being underwhelming in my opinion. It's like they gave more respect to Godzilla at the expense of good characters and a good story.
@@Beforezzzfunny considering this movie did none of that. Why would you not respect Godzilla in a Godzilla movie?
I actually have a lot of respect for this movie as it was my introduction to the Godzilla franchise. Also happy 25th anniversary for Tristar Pictures’ Godzilla: (1998-2023).

This movie depicts Godzilla as if it came from nature, similar to dinosaurs. and I second all the comments about how good of a movie it really is.
The emerge from under the city is so EPIC. And the look on the soldiers faces would be our looks if a giant God-Zilla walked through the city - Epic.
And they even put in the sweeping eyelid - details matter. Great movie.
It's a mutated Iguana not a Dinosaur
Seeing Matthew Broderick getting that disposable camera is very nostalgic for me. When I was a kid I liked to get those and take pictures of things.

I look at this movie like an alternative graphic novel. I grew up with the original Godzilla and all the variations that came after and I still like this movie. I like the monsterverse and all of them. I look forward to watching Godzilla Minus One as soon as I can see it.
Like Mathew Broderick this was also my thoughts when I saw that huge bait pile 'That's a lot of Fish' and I also liked Gene Reno's answer to the coffee.

Back then I was studied in 8th standard. Miss those days 😭
I remember when I was a kid, this movie was secretive about what Godzilla would look like, he was teased a lot, we only saw his feet and his tail. It made me wanna see it. When I saw this in theaters, this was the moment we first got a good look at him when he emerged from the ground. I remember being satisfied when I saw it and thought it was so cool and then the rest of it was fun. I know this isn't a great movie, but I enjoy it, and this was a memorable moment when after so long of waiting to see what he looked like, this was a payoff for me.
I loved this 1998 version despite what the so-called “critics” thought of it, watching it on the big screen was just awesome
That was the late 90s when critics still made sense with their criticisms. The film objectively didn't do godzilla justice. It's that painfully obvious when fans back then didn't like it

All Godzilla did was live in the city.
All of Emmerich's films that I've seen, I honestly like the hell out of. All of them get surprisingly low scores, and I honestly have no idea why. This one is probably my favorite from Emmerich, as well as The Day After Tomorrow and '2012'.

I do not get why people say the CGI in this movie is bad. Yes it can have its awkward moments like in the 5:49 mark and sometimes you might not feel the weight of it especially when it starts running. Other than those shortcomings, the movie does a good job to give you a sense of its size since the movie is filmed at a human's point of view for most of the movie and the crew did have to make CGI models to convey a 200 foot monster from said point of view. So yeah, I think the CGI actually quite good for the time, sure not Jurassic Park good, but still better than in a lot of other films in the 90s.
