Part of my oil delivery service was yearly furnace cleaning and maintenance. I never had much issue with the furnace. The problem I had was that the power would go out fairly often. There were two ways to go, install an generator, or wood stoves in the fireplaces. Since I had two of those in the house that was the route I went, it was really cost-effective. It saves me one winter with frozen pipes. My neighbors all had frozen pipes the power when out and it took them 4 days to get it back up. Underground power lines. Made it look nice but well there were problems the developer didn't do a proper job of it. Those four days the temps never got above 0 deg F. and lows were down to 20 to 25. Extremely cold for CT. I was fine, and well the wood stoves you can even cook on too. The grief I got from an aunt that lived with me was never-ending. Over money, I spent on the stoves. Gee, It was my house. You might want to do the same, It's cheap insurance against frozen water pipes. My oil guy showed me how to do all that stuff. I also kept some spares on hand just in case. It's better to do annual servicing and maintenance rather than call as needed. That way whoever you have knows your system. Oh, and the other thing is the water tank, They don't last as long as they say, and well there are a lot of garbage ones that ware installed in houses.
