This is a great process. I was on a Zoom meeting today and was stunned at how good the latest release was at removing my background with zero tweaking.
Eventually no physical green screen will be needed due to software advancements
Great tip! A couple things that would make this method even easier...
1. Just load the video file as a media source directly in obs instead of playing it in a media player
2. Just record the meeting in Zoom instead of opening another OBS window to record.
Other than that this method worked great for me I just did this to simplify the process. Thank you so much!
thank you fr this explanation. i have been trying his steps and it is not working for me.
Wow if this works it will be amazing to edit in old videos with new background. Thanks for tip
This works but my problem here is the audio. There is no audio output
@@mc.6122 If you load the video file as a media source directly in obs, in the second instance of obs you need to add application audio (beta) and select the first instance of obs as the source, because for whatever reason zoom meeting audio cannot be captured this way. so in the second instance of obs you record zhe zoom meeting with the custom background plus the application audio of the first instance. I also needed to increase the audio input of the application audio.
You really have a talent for explaining. I don't get bored watching your vids they just flow. Thank you.
Wow, Kevin, you are a wizard. Thank you, never knew that we could do that with zoom and obs. You are amazing!
This is so awesome. I've been developing my video editing skills and I have been looking for ways to record myself with a green screen so I can put whatever background I wanted for my RUclips channel. You have shown me a new way to do this and I'm looking forward in trying this out tomorrow. Thank you.
This is such a great work around if you don't have the space or money for a green screen. Super helpful video. Thanks fo sharing this Kevin. :)
Son, thank you. You explained it so simply that even a computer challenged old man can do it. I am trying to do a couple of comedy videos, and you are now my go to guy. Thank you.
Keep at it sir! Goodluck!
computer challenged girl here too. Music video making.
William, are you his dad?
oh so nice
computer challanged xDDD
Thanks Kevin. Your instructions are so clear, i could understand even without watching for most parts of it. 👌
Greatly needed tutorial as always. We have benefited from endlessly tutorials. Gracias Kevin...
Speechless! You did great explaining how to do this. Thank you so much.
One of the most useful things I’ve ever seen, such an amazing tip…I am in complete awe, how you figured this cross compatible use-case…thanks a ton!
You are a great teacher. We do not hide anything from the audience or learners as a teacher. For that, we need to do learn more and more. That is my theory. All the best Kevin
I love this Kevin! I will be using it in my future videos for sure!
Kevin, You are genius. I dreamed about this possibility and you have just made it.
Thank you is much for posting this video. It is the first one I've watched that doesn't promote an app I have to pay money for. Your instructions were extremely detailed and very helpful. Now I don't have to worry about my messy background on my videos! Will definitely be watching more of your videos
Hi Kevin. I've been using XCAM from XSplit, but it only outputs in 720p eventhough the camera is 1080. Do you know of any other utilities that can strip the background out as recording/broadcasting is taking place? XCam is great, but I'd like to see a 1080 output solution.
Thanks A Billion for this, Kevin!
Extremely Helpful as always.
That was a very interesting technique to learn.
Thank you so much! This is amazing. I was looking how to edit backgrounds out using other software and I was just struggling to get what I wanted. This made the whole process super easy and straight forward.
Wow. This is really great. I never new how to do this until now!
Love it, you just literally saved me HOURS !!!!! Fantastic
Great video Kevin. Very useful tutorial to remove the background.
I really appreciate you and for all you do... I am amazed at this, I am so happy. Thank you again!!! I'm a super happy subscriber here.

I have been looking for this solution for YEARS! You sir are the man! I walked through this process, but it didn't appear to push the audio through to the second OBS session for some reason. That is freakin awesome though. Thank you.
Thank you so so much for this tutorial. You explained it so clearly. Now I can do my task! Thanks again!
Brilliant!!! This is ingenuity at its best.
Not really the image of you any person is Blurry on the edges
Thank you so much Kevin, you are great. All your videos are easy to understand. Keep up the great work
Thank you very much, Kevin! This was very helpful. You are a star!
Thank you. You explained it so simply that even a computer challenged
LOVE THIS! Thank you so much. I was looking for a way to not have to setup a green screen. Haven't tried this yet, but it makes sense. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again :)
Excellent use of OBS and Zoom - this is a neat little trick for sure! Thank you Kevin
Woow, Thank you very much, I already downloaded the apps and then tried to edit while listening to this tutorial
Yaay This was the video I requested 6 months aoooo😁😁😁😘😘love u kevinn
That'"s great, thank you Kevin !
Amazing! Never thought this was possible. Thanks
This is what I'm looking for. Thank you Kevin.
Kevin, It looks like I'm the only one that had a problem. I usually can get it with you great help. I'm going to try it on another computer. Thank you!
Awesome lesson. I second everyone’s compliments! Thank you for taking the time to figure this out for us! May I suggest the title of this video could be how to replace a background instead of how to remove a background. I’m trying to figure out how to remove a background from a video so I can add a chroma key in OBS and use it as a stinger. Any suggestions?
I totally agree.
But then you could add a green background in zoom and record the session so you put whatever as background
So I could download clips or scenes from movies, TV Shows, etc. Broadcast them through OBS using the virtual camera onto Zoom, and then add my own green screen?!?! Absolutely GENIUS!
Your voice is so clear that makes me understand....
Another very valuable video Kevin, thanks!
This one is 100% legit, im not even a bot.. saved my life when i already finished editing. thumbs up!
wow that was an amazing workaround. So glad I landed on this page
thanks, Kevin I really wanted to learn how to do this.
For me you are the number one RUclipsr ever. Thank u Kevin smart person.
that was a smart way to change background good job
I’ve tried this beforehand, and especially with racer chairs with the holes in the back, or if you have stuff in your background, it doesn’t work the best
thanks for your share your knowledge about Zoom now we need it for online learning ...
This is really helpful. Thank you!👍
This seems so complicated but I'm excited to try it
Kevin you are a genius!
Thanks Kevin, very clever combination of OBS and Zoom. Now, how to deal with the weird shades that usually appears around the face of the zoom participant which uses a custom background??
Thanks for awesome explanation. I was struggling to get such kind of effects since long
Thanks Kevin for a great lesson. Could you please put out an instructional video on how to photoshop a missing person into an image without using Photoshop software. Also how to create a single image from multiple images without the separator lines in between
A quite creative idea - thank you for that input
Really cool feature! Thanks for sharing
Excellent tutorial! - thank you.
As always, so appreciate your help and experience Kevin. God bless your day.
Thanks Brett - you too!
AWESOME! This worked so well! Thank you sir!
FYI you can record the Zoom video directly using the Zoom's local recording feature. It saves you extra steps and easier on the CPU
Thank you Kev for sharing your idea. Thumbs up!
Hi Kevin, yes an excellent work around. I did, however detect that there was a background distortion issue around the edges of your profile at 10.36 from Zoom's Virtual background when moving head/body. This is the problem I personally have when using the Zoom feature without an actual green screen. I am sure that you are aware of this slight imperfection. Is room lighting a solution to a crisper profile without the background lag?
If you have a decent GPU OBS + a BGR PLUGIN should do fine in 2022
Great video. It helps me a lot. Thanks Kevin.
Beautiful video & You are the Best Kevin Stratvert & Thank you
Thank you Kevin for explaining this tutorial
Great explanation. Can we get a part 2 that shows how to apply the end product of this one to another recording? Like adding to a gaming video for example?
This actually worked and got me acquainted with OBS and VLC, both excellent open-source products. However, I was creating a standalone video for use in a video project in Sony Vegas, and for that, it didn't work. It worked in that the method you described created a video in which I replace the background but OBS creates the file in a format that Sony Vegas can't use. So it was all for naught in that instance.
Use VLC or Handbrake to change the file format. In VLC, got to Media -> Convert/Save and select the file and what output type you want. There are approximately 20 options to convert to - super quick and easy.
If that won't get you a usable file, Hanbdbrake can convert to and from almost 100 different formats although it is a good bit more complex in the available options.
This tutorial just super. All your videos Kevin are incredible. Thank you for your business
Glad you like them!
I am first because I haven't refreshed !
Youre 4th
@@gradientO nice
Dude, you are a genius!!! Thanks! :)
Ur genius keven. That is a big help to me. Thanks
Hi Kevin! Thanks for the tips here. Great video! I don't have room for a green screen. Can the same process here be used to change the background while "livestreaming" from OBS? I'd love to have the beach behind me rather than closet doors. Thanks!
Thank you so sooooo much!!!! This solved my problem! More power to your channel!
Thank you so much! you deserve 10 million subscribers... sincerely speaking from the heart!
Dude You're Genius Great Thanks Kevin.
Very nice video, thank you! But I have to point out that (believe it or not) the process is more complex on the Macintosh. I am trying to do it myself on my MacBook Pro. I had to install Blackhole, create a multi-output device with Audio MIDI Setup (Applications > Utilities), etc. to get the audio to stream, since the Mac kept trying to run audio through the microphone. Oh, and I have to open the second instance of OBS with the Terminal. On my mid-2012 MacBook Pro running Catalina, the audio in the final video clip was out of sync. I then tried the process on my work MacBook Pro running Big Sur (this is a work assignment, but would come in handy for my personal projects). I found that the OBS video stream slows to a crawl. Thanks again for your video, I will keep trying to get it working on my Macs. (Maybe when I finally update my Hackintosh to Linux, I will try it there also.)
This is out of the box.👍👍👍
Thank you so much I have been wanting to know this for ever
Thank you very much Kevin. This is so great 😊
Now that was awfully darned clever! I do a lot of video editing and I'd never seen that combo before...awesome! /cheer
thank you for this tutorial..it helps a lot
Impressive and a little bit like an infinity mirror. Surely an interesting way to do it - I would hope that there will be capabilities of this type available in either OBS, OpenShot or DaVinci Resolve in the near future. After all this background removal tool evolved in Zoom as a tool solely available for i7-processors a year ago to something which now runs in real time on a wide range of platforms. I would especially like a blurry background with configurable levels of blurriness.
There's a new magic mask feature in DaVinci Resolve Studio (the paid version) that does something like this. Check this out: ruclips.net/video/pTdm0soTUXI/видео.html Hoping it comes to more editing apps soon.
Thanks Kevin; you always explain quite clearly and simply; some idea to make it cooler; how about combining your created music video with a music video of your favorite pop artist, like one in youtube, then you would appear both in a video singing together the same song maybe in a living room or in a concert:-)
Kevin,you are the best.Thanks
I'm an old timer and a later comer to your channel. I must say I've found your videos easy to understand and follow. Looking forward to learning more from you.
Hi Kevin, love your vids. Can you please make videos teaching java or python?
Edit : I realised that you made basic python already but no java. Can you please make Java or a little more advanced python.
Edit 2 : what I'm basically asking for is more coding videos.
Awesome job Kevin! Thanks.
thanks kevin, I have zoom pro account, so that I can directly record through zoom, instead of recording again with obs. this is so useful for me, thanks again.
recording through Zoom might give you a poorer quality than recording the screen through OBS because Zoom is much more aggressive in the compression settings. But probably it doesn't matter too much. since there will be edges and artifacts anyway...
i streamed the whole video . thank you . i appreciate the tutorial . ✨ 👍🏻
Appreciated video and very helpful for creators 👍🏻👌🏻
Thanks a lot! this is what I need!
Ok Kevin, it's exciting 😊 I will try it and let you know, thanks a lot,🙏
I agree with Hovindu Watawla "I am speechless! I didn't know how to add a video file into OBS. This is an instant hack that is probably so great for any person who doesn't have a green screen. This video is super helpful and thanks you so much for sharing this one" Thanks very much.
Thank you Kavin!
Can you also show us how we may down scale or upscale our MP3 recorded song.
I like your videos because you make them simple and well explained
thanks for sharing to all people about what u learn about background vedio I'm very interested to learn
Nice Idea Kevin. I shall give it a try. Certainly some like of myself. Please go on like this.
And here I am with a homework I have to finish..
Thanks again man
You're a legend Kev.
Hi. Glad to have found your channel, I am learning so much from you! Thanks to you, I am now also able to change backgrounds of my videos.
I just wanna ask though, why would zoom cover the whole screen with the background and you won't see the video screencap. Then if I remove the background, the video screencap is there. I went ahead with the recording (with the background covering the whole screen in zoom), hoping it would still work, but it didn't. I hear the sound, but even the background is gone and the screen is just black.
This happened on 2 or 3 videos, even when I was using the same background I used on the videos I didn't have trouble with. Thanks in advance!
