Hank Williams Jr spent most of the early days of his career living in the shadow of his legendary father. He felt a tremendous amount of pressure to imitate his father's signature sound, but he wanted to pave out his own path and not have to be constantly compared to his dad.
It took quite a bit of struggle and even an almost fatal accident to set him on the road that would eventually allow him to express his own boldly unique musical vision.
By fusing traditional country elements with southern rock and just a dash of blues, Williams Jr. successfully crafted his own original sound that eventually resulted in him receiving recognition for a staggering 10 number-one singles, 30 gold records, and 6 platinum ones.
But even though he finally found his voice, he almost lost it in 1975, when he slipped and fell while hiking and tumbled 500 feet to the ground, sustaining serious head injuries in the process. He had to have numerous surgeries, and it took him two years to recover, but eventually, he reemerged and went on to release dozens of albums - many of which rose to the top of the charts.
Join Facts Verse as we take a look back on this horrific incident and how it nearly put an end to Hank Williams Jr.'s career. We'll also touch on a bit more of his life story and all of the struggles he had to endure to finally prove to the world that he was a heck of a lot more than just a country star's son.

It’s on my bucket list to go see his grave one day. I remember hearing about Bocephus having a bad accident when I was still young. Oh wow I didn’t know there was a Hank 4. Keep an eye out for Hank four. That's the son of Hank 3. You can look him up on here. He is to Junior what three is to senior. The look and voice are uncanny. He didn't want to do it when he was younger but now he is starting to do it. Guitar skills are basic but all that voice. I'm going to keep my eyes and ears out for him.

He sang but never said anything the entire night. This wasn’t too long after his fall so we thought that was probably the reason for it. Anybody who doesn't know about this has no doubt been living under a rock. It'd a shame how often people have to endure almost losing everything to get the tools they need to make it

I knew why HWJR wore a beard and glasses, but I always thought it was a motorcycle accident. Either way, glad he made it through.

I remember reading the newspaper article back in '75 and a few years later liking "All In Alabama". I also read a book, but I'm not sure it was "Living Proof".

Your report is also the only one to mention a detail that nobody else has--- that Hank's friend's son stayed behind while the friend left to get help. I like when a source tells a more complete story.

Why is this video titled Hank Jr. talks about the accident that almost killed him.
I must have missed something, cause I ain’t seen Hank speaking no where in this clip ?

It’s truly a miracle he survived and was able to resume his career. I have a question maybe some of you can answer. Was Hank Jr. in between wives when the accident happened? I saw a newspaper clipping where his first wife Gwyn was quoted about the accident and talked about getting him home. Then I saw where his daughter (by second wife Becky) talked about how her mom flew to Montana when her Dad was in the accident.

HWJR!! The 1st time he asked me to go out with him he called and said this is HWJR do you want to go out with me. The next day we went deep sea fishing with Merle Kilgore & his then wife Nancy. After. the all day fishing trip we went on a tear that night with his then manager J.R. Smith & his date. We went to The Shrimp Boat for dinner then on to The Gold Nugget a country & western night club. We partied like there was no tomorrow. Everytime he was in the city where I worked we would get together & have a really good time. We now have houses a short distance from each other in Apalachicola, FL. HWJR is a amazing man & one of the best Country Entertainer's in the business.

I’ve heard of you. If you have any pics that wouldn’t be too embarrassing or that he wouldn’t want you to, send me some of him in regular life. I’m wanting to start writing a book about how Hank influenced my whole generation ( I was born in 1969, and raised on Bocephus), and it would help me to have some pictures of him nobody else has.

I had no idea about his accident 1975 - probably because I wasn’t worn until 1977.
