To me he looks terrified. It was the same when he told Thea. Throughout both scenes before either one confirmed they still loved him, and actually appreciated who he had become, he was downright terrified. Oliver kind of outlined in Season 1 to Laurel the main reason he keeps who he is hidden from Moira and Thea (he was talking about why he didn't say what happened on the island, but the same rule applied to his current life as the Arrow). Sure, there's the practical reason of the less people who know, the easier the secret is to keep, but he's afraid that Moira and Thea will see him as a psychopathic monster. He's afraid of the reaction he initially got from Tommy.

This is some of the best acting in the whole series. Both Susanna Thompson and Stephen Amell really shine here. Thompson somehow manages to communicate so much in two words. And nowhere else in the series will you ever see Amell’smcharacter take on a facial expression like he does here. This makes sense...after all, this specific circumstance could only happen once. Still, it could have been just another plot point, but Amell manages to convey a whole human being’s complexity and depth in just a few seconds of screen time. Arrow has many flaws, and the series was at it’s best in the first few seasons. But anyone who dismisses Amell as a serious actor should watch this scene. He soars in these moments. He sells it 100%.

The only good things about Season 3 and 4 were Roy becoming Arsenal, Laurel becoming the Black Canary, and Thea taking on the mantle of Speedy. RIP Arrow. You have failed this Green Arrow fandom.
Season 5 was definitely an improvement from Season 3 and 4, but definitely not Season 2 level. Nothing beats the level of intensity and suspense of Season 2. I will say though that Josh Segarra (i.e. Prometheus) is on Slade's level of badass.
SPOILER FOR 6x18: I don't know if you're caught up, but hopefully you watched 6x18. Prometheus returns and he's scarier than ever. Only Josh Freaking Segarra could give such a spine-chilling performance.
Watching it in 2019, when the show is coming to its series finale in weeks, the faces, the acting and everything in the early seasons seems from a very different show. No wonder why so many people stopped watching since Season 3/4. However, the love is still there. Bittersweet when rewatching key moments like this. Lucky there is RUclips so that we can just revisit them at will.
Could not have said it better myself. The first two seasons were outstanding, but then it became a different show. Season 5 had some great moments of nostalgia that brought some element of the OG arrow back, but nothing compares to the early seasons.
Season 2 Arrow:Moira Death Flash:Henry Supergirl:Mon-El(not dead but off earth) Damn LOT your the lucky winner of not losing someone in season 2 of your show
omg his face, the sheer drop when she reveals that she knows, and the way we suddenly see him show his true face under all the layers of lies to cover up his true identity. god this scene is so mesmerising. this just defines why arrow s1 and s2 are hailed among the greatest comic books shows ever... this scene just gives me goosebumps everytime i see it.
Oliver was glad that his mother didn't get mad at him when she told him that she knows he's the Arrow and that she's so proud of him. It would be good if Sussanna Thompson made a special guest appearance as Oliver's mother Moira as a ghost.
1:30 funny, it looks like oliver is instictively trying to reach for that voice-altering device he uses to disguise his voice when he's the arrow, like "wtf let me hide and pretend I don't know anything" lol
Back then Oli had his shit together and knew what he was doing without getting a lecture from someone (usually Felicity). It's a real shame because I think he's had negative character growth since the mid point of season 3. However I can see the light at the end of the tunnel for season 5 so I'm hoping he's finally going to became more like the Green Arrow in the comics and not be quite so moody.
Nah, I think the difference between then and now is he still got lectured in a way. Except it was always Diggle with the words of wisdom and he could always be straight with him but not in a way where he would feel shit about everything. Felicity usually just shouts at him, bring back Diggles words of wisdom!
Something that not nearly enough people talk about in both this and the Thea scene is Oliver’s reaction in his face and body language. He looks ashamed, guilty, heartbroken, and so damned scared when he finally tells them like he’s waiting for them to yell or walk out on him and the relief and joy when they accept him and tell them they’re proud of him is so amazing. This is peak cape writing.
Ohhh man don’t tell me they’re going to pull the same stunt like they did with season 2 of the Flash.... (I know it’s been out for a while but I just started really binging Arrow... My main show is the Flash) but usually in these shows when a parent tells their child how proud they are of them and they know the secret identity... then a few episodes later they’re gonna die... as soon as I saw this I’m like ohhhh no Moira’s gonna die isn’t she? Just like Henry.... #RIPHenryAllen 😢😢 I still haven’t gotten over that one.
Nah she'd be fine. By the time of even the Undertaking, Oliver had moved away from the dark path he was heading down. Once this scene happened, he was a fully fletched hero.
As much as I loved Season 5, saying Oliver was a monster who enjoyed killing was a total retcon. Anyone who rewatches Season 1 like me knows that the monster thing is a lie. If Oliver was a monster, he would have killed Adam Hunt in their first encounter. He would have killed all the one percenters in one go instead of giving them a chance to make it right. Season 1 Oliver would never skin a guy alive or shoot someone who is already down. So yeah, Season 5 is amazing and is the 2nd best season in my opinion after Season 2, but it had 3 problems- Felicity's Helix arc, the treatment of Black Siren and the retcon that Oliver is a monster who enjoys killing.
@@fiction5559 It still works if the takeaway is that he enjoyed killing whenever he did it, but wasn't copious about it. The man's not stupid. The heat on him was bad enough. Diggle's involvement then, is definitely what saved him from this path, and should've been acknowledged. Since first watching it, I've thought that Felicity's Helix arc could be fixed with one simple change. Keep going with it and make her an antagonist. Then have her kidnapped with everyone else, with the team a tad hesitant to trust her. Have her sacrifice herself to save Diggle from the island explosion, so that all he gets is nerve damage in his arm.
@@ginge641 But there is no proof he did enjoy it. If he did, then he would do it more than he did in Season 1. If he enjoyed killing, then why would he give those one percenters a chance to make it right? He would kill them in one go and love it. He would be a total psycho in that case. It would have worked if during the torture in 5x17, he realized what Chase wanted to hear so he would say it to make Chase let him go, but because of the fact that he is "Guilt Arrow", he would believe it himself and the others would convince him that its BS. However, I think he might have enjoyed killing Claybourne a LITTLE bit because what Claybourne did with the weaponized tuberculosis could have reminded him of the Alpha Omega outbreak in Season 3 flashbacks and Akio's death, making him snap temporarily.
Wish Moira didn't die, she was extremely well written and strong. This particular scene is one of my favorite on the show, made so moving by her imminent death.
Before I saw this scene for the first time, I did not like Moira but when I did watch it, I realised that she is proud of him, and that means she is even not angry about Oliver attacking her office in season 1, that means she understands how difficult it must've been for him to do it and therefore she is proud that her son didn't let his family come in between his work for justice. That means Moira is good, that's when I started liking Moira a lot.
Oliver deserved more happiness. He deserved to live his life with his mom alive and him too. The universe really isn't fair - even when you create it i guess. But this is so heartwarming - his mother was gold and this scene does nothing, but prove that
I like how both Moira and Thea showed their support for Oliver when they found out the truth. They really loved him.

Season 5 was definitely an improvement from Season 3 and 4, but definitely not Season 2 level. Nothing beats the level of intensity and suspense of Season 2. I will say though that Josh Segarra (i.e. Prometheus) is on Slade's level of badass.
2nd Half of Season 5 was seriously Good ..Especially Prometheus. He is the only person who made Arrow Beg for something after Slade
Season five is actually good
SPOILER FOR 6x18:
I don't know if you're caught up, but hopefully you watched 6x18. Prometheus returns and he's scarier than ever. Only Josh Freaking Segarra could give such a spine-chilling performance.
Susanna Thompson (Oliver's mother) is gorgeous. Can't believe that she is currently 62 today.
Moira and Thea: We're proud of you Oliver!
Iris: Barry how could you lie to me?
WTF
watching this in 2020 and i damn as hell miss this show!
I wonder if Aunt May knows Peter is Spider-Man
+Troll_115 comic book wise she does
mgk22 How does she find out
+Troll_115 I don't really know but in the comics i collected in the 2000's she had known for sometime
+Troll_115 In the original movies she kind of hints that she knows.
+Troll_115 I bet you she Knows , she just does not want to tell him because it will make him feel stupid
If they got season 3 and 4 Laurel and Thea, mixed with Season 1 and 2 Team Arrow, wutve been perfect
What about Season 3 @ 4 Diggle?
season 4 Diggle's an arsehole and that hurts to say but its true
Season 4 Diggle was cool. He was there for his brother. That was naive, but not an arsehole thing to do.
Xander M Season 5 Diggle was way better
That Diggle also had a cool arc as more of a mentor figure, but i prefer Season 6 Diggle to him.
Such a damn great scene!! Gets me every time!
Season 2
Arrow:Moira Death
Flash:Henry
Supergirl:Mon-El(not dead but off earth)
Damn LOT your the lucky winner of not losing someone in season 2 of your show
Arjun Nagra well they lost stein in s03 now!
And amaya in SEASON 2
I need to go back and rewatch this series
Started rewatching this week ❤
A teenager's dream: Their mom says"I'm Proud of you for becoming a masked serial killing vigilante"
I love Arrow, and it has come a very long way
yes she is so proud she shot her own son to keep the fact she knew about him a secret
I think that was b4 the night of undertaking
omg just see this scene again after long time. seriously this scene is so well played :") i hope arrow makes this kind of scene again.
ninjas cutting onions in here or what
Season 1 and 2 of Arrow are fantastic.
Rest of the entire arrow-verse never lived up to it.
I kinda miss Moira, it's been soooo long!
omg his face, the sheer drop when she reveals that she knows, and the way we suddenly see him show his true face under all the layers of lies to cover up his true identity. god this scene is so mesmerising. this just defines why arrow s1 and s2 are hailed among the greatest comic books shows ever... this scene just gives me goosebumps everytime i see it.
“So let her see you do something good. As Mayor.”
Yeah, because being a politician is a great way to prove that you are done lying.
with just these 2 words being said and repeated, so much truth and emotions came out
Jesus, we've come so far from this in the arrowverse.
Let's just take a moment to appreciate your profile pic. Totally off topic, but 👌🏼
I'm not crying at a RUclips clip that I watch at least once monthly, you are
Oliver was glad that his mother didn't get mad at him when she told him that she knows he's the Arrow and that she's so proud of him.
Oliver was shot
Moira: waht happend?
Oliver: motercycle accident it was stupid
All good characters that Arrow writers have killed and Felicity still is alive.
Strange how Moira never apologized for shooting her son in Season One. hahaha
he did have an arrow pointed at her
jonathan rose not when he shot her though, but I get your point
hobyboy07 or having him kidnapped and tortured for that matter!
Season 1 and 2 were incredible!
Season 2 i just pure gold...what happend arrows writers??? i can't stand not even 1 minute of the show. i miss this so much i gonna cry
That 2nd "I know"
Ohhh man don’t tell me they’re going to pull the same stunt like they did with season 2 of the Flash....
I bet i have seen this show more times than any of you.
After 5x17 revelation, I'm not so sure she'd be proud :D
lol
This was the best scene between Oliver and his mother.
The best scene in the whole season 2!!!!
Season 2 one and 5 was the best arrows ever. Season 8 for it being short was good too
nah, 1 was good 2 was good and 3 was good, rest were alright after
Seeing Oliver smile after his mom just said she couldn't be more proud is everything!!!
I love this scene. Does anyone know the music playing in the background? I couldn't find it on the soundtrack.
She's good lookin'
Iris: We are arrow.
Aw shit wrong program
This scene is just wayy too beautiful💚
Oliver deserved more happiness.
He deserved to live his life with his mom alive and him too.
The universe really isn't fair - even when you create it i guess.
But this is so heartwarming - his mother was gold and this scene does nothing, but prove that
They always gotta reveal they knew the whole time before they died.
Moira still looks good. She still is a top 5 character for me
