They did actually find out what happened! She had bipolar 1 and experienced hallucinations and delusions. She likely was experiencing those and went to hide in the water tanks (her thinking will have been incredibly irrational at this point). She later realised she needed to get out but she couldn’t because there were no ladders and water was being sucked down, taking her with it. She shedded her clothes either to lose additional weight or as a symptom of hypothermia (the water was freezing). She then drowned. Tragic.
