Katsuhiro Otomo manga style is so cinematic back then and even now. It's timeless. He knows how to utilize perspective skillfully in manga that's never had seen before. I admire his work a lot.
Coincidentally enough just read the first volume for the first time a couple weeks ago. I'd watched the anime a million times, but hadn't read the Manga. It blew my damn mind. So incredible.
A good tip for Amazon manga hunting is to use .co.jp find what you're looking for and then change the url back to .com/.co.uk I have done it for a bunch of Yoshikazu Ebisu and Yoshiharu Tsuge books in the past
I have to imagine you'll talk about this when you get to Akira, but what is up with all the foot sound effects? I think the most common one is "tak". You just showed that first two pages of Fireball, and there it was!
It's wild to see Otomo feeling out his style. Tom mentioning how his backrounds are the star is a real astute observation of Otomo. In regards to Akira ,did he work like some current mangaka and have a small team to help him or is was it solo Otomo?
Brilliant. A creator who truly deserves this level of analysis.
Thanks Chris. It's so fun seeing how clearly he's working themes out as he builds his skills up to Akira. A blast to put under the microscope. --Ed

So excited that you guys are tackling Otomo. His work is brilliant. Love listening/watching y'all while I'm working on comics.
This is my first time seeing this channel! It's fantastic! Thanks so much, guys.
I can listen to you guys for hours! Thank you.
Fantastic job on deconstructing Akira from your perspective guys!
Another banger! Keep up the great work.
Otomo is insanely prolific. Really wish more of his work was accessible. I read Akira often to remind myself to try harder at drawing.

have you finished the series yet?
Great point at the end… Environment as Exposition!
And even "Mean Streets" was a reworking of his "Who's That Knocking at My Door," his first feature. So 100%.

Quality content. You guys are slept on!
What a great series to add to the channel!! I'm eating this shit up!!
So cool. So radical. Thanks guys, much appreciated!
Wonderful episode. I just recently got Domu, so will read it before your next episode about it.
Also the telekinetic kids in Arthur C. Clarke's "Childhood's End" from the 50s.
I'm hyped for these episodes
I just ordered the 35th Anniversary collection and am nearly wetting myself in anticipation.
This is great, guys. Thanks!
I'd say do a longer episode for Domu, but just one episode. 1 episode per volume of Akira though, duh.
That's what it's lookin' like. Why have 4 episodes of foreplay before getting to Akira?

I’d love to see a deeper dive into Domu.
Jim Mahfood sent me here.
Ive seen both dubs of the anime but only heard about the manga
you guys are RAD!!!!
Speaking of Making Of's, how about a review of META MAUS?
Is Memories still available anywhere for a decent price?
cool

Satoshi Kon assisted Otomo on much of Akira, before becoming a great director in his own right.
