I am not going to act like I am familiar with Akira the manga, but someone who is goes by the name of Omar Isuf. He's a health & fitness enthusiast that provides great quality content to the general public. In Omar's words, "there is that unawakened universe of potential we can tap into. Akira is the symbolic spirit of this ascension.". In essence, beyond the information that he provides, he encourages us to be better versions of ourselves. We can always be better, it goes beyond just the weights/ gym. He absolutely loves your work Ed and holds great sentimental value to Akira. It has tremendously influenced his perspective on life, training, etc. On the back of his training belt it reads "Akira Lives". When you hear him speak about your work/Akira and what it means to him, you would be confident that he would represent and honour that jacket beyond measure. Sorry, I am not trying to sound deep, but I hope that if the jacket does not go to Omar Isuf - it goes to someone like him that holds great pride in your work and continues to represent and share the teachings in every day life for the better.

Loved your in depth analysis. Akira was the first anime film I ever watched. I was 5 and my dad brought it as a gift from a trip because, you know? It's cartoons! It's for kids! I didn't understand ANY of it. But I loved it and watched it until the VHS broke. Later, in my 20s I read the books. And they are just sooo good. I read that Akira was Otomo's attempt to enter the American Market. After Domu he felt that if he wrote the story in a different way he could sell well in the American market. It's so funny how his interpretation of what American readers like, mixed with his own storytelling tropes created such a strange yet universally liked story.
In relation to their gang, they are I assume what Otomo imagined a future evolution of the Japanese biker gangs called "Bosozoku". It's kind of a violent youth culture with lots of fighting and loud customized motorcycles. The late 70's and early 80's up until the 90's was probably peak time for Bosozoku as well. There were television shows and movies focusing on them, lots of scare news pieces about them, etc. Also, they would often battle en masse, we're talking like a 100 people on bikes loudly revving engines and shutting down roads. While they still exist today, I've seen a few groups in Kanagawa, it's not quite the cultural force that it was. In the 80's there were literally thousands of these gangs, currently there are maybe 100. With that in mind, It makes sense that Otomo would be adding them as the quintessential thug type characters for Akira.
