What is a DEATH WOBBLE you ask???
Papa Dar has 3 jeeps and him and Paul had done work on this particular one previously. They hadn't got to the steering and front end yet and the jeep had a horrible death wobble that needed to be fixed. What exactly is a death wobble? Check out this video to find out!

Another fine video, thanks for sharing it with us. We've had death wobble like that in our '03 Dodge pickup with the Cummins. When we talked to Chrysler of course they say that can't happen....
Cured it in our case by putting in the steering components out of a 2009 truck which were much, much larger, fresh upper and lower ball joints and new tires. It seems to be worse with worn front tires in our case.
It surely does get one's attention when that happens at freeway speeds, that much is for sure and certain.
    Thanks again and stay well.

  • @Rx7man
    @Rx7man 3 года назад +4

Being a dodge guy, I know that feeling! toeing out helps mask it, but usually it's the track bar that's worn out.. On solid axle front ends with the tie rods in front of axle, what happens is the axle can shift, the weight transfers to the outside, which makes the axle shift to the other side and doing that turns the front wheels in a different direction, so the chassis rebounds and the process repeats

Back in 2001, my Dad had a (1994?) Jeep Grand Cherokee. I was driving it one day, merging onto a high-speed off ramp about 1/3 way through the turn it starts to death wobble at 65mph. between being a relatively new driver and not knowing what to do beyond slowing down and try to get it to the shoulder without crashing - it was an experience.

First time I experienced death wobble was in a '76 Cheyenne lifted with 38's (back in the 80s). All I could think about was which house was I going to end up in and how bad. Years later, My daughters had a Grand Cherokee on Camp Pendleton that I ended up driving back to Central California. Enroute, I experienced death wobble 10x as bas as in the Chevy. Middle lane, Norwalk in heavy traffic. The steering wheel felt like it was jerking 90deg both directions at 50 cycles per second and the jeep was 4 feet off the ground. Semi, mid trailer to the right and seat cover firmly bung hole grasped. I got her over to the next exit by some form of devine intervention and parker her at a Doubletree. Unpacked my deployed kids stuff and got all in my wifes 4 runner and went home. The drive from Norwalk to south of Fresno was white knuckle through Bakersfield. I went back and picked up that thing with a car trailer and it was FOR SALE immediately. Both kids had half of what I got for it and Marine money to buy Toyota's when they each got back home. My younger twin asked why I sold "jeeper" and when I told her the aformentioned story, She laughed and said, "so they call that death wobble. Makes sense as that what it felt like when it happened to me"
Death wobble is no joke.... Glad you got Dar squared away!!!

I have a 2012 Rubicon and it too got a case of the death wobble. So I changed out all the steering component and damper. The wobble didn't go away. Turns out, it was a bad tire. Yup. The stock wrangler tire had a broken ply. I changed the tires, the wobble went away. So, if you acn't detect any noticeable play in the steering or tires when lifted off the ground, chances are you have a bad tire.

lol I had this on my 97 wrangler. It would happen on every single significant bump on the highway if I was going over 55 and would go away as soon as I slowed down to 55. Got to the point that I knew where every single bump on the highway was for my commute, and which lane to be in if it was avoidable.

I've dealt with the death wobble on some of my vehicles in the past. My son told me his Jeep was shaking when he hit a bump . He didn't know about a death wobble. I took a ride with him and when it started he just kept driving at speed. I told him he was going to damage steering parts and how to get it out of the wobble but being the hard head he was he kept doing it his way. Luckily the Jeep was sold before he destroyed it. I told the new owner about and he was a jeep guy and wasn't concerned. He planned on fixing it.

How will you adjust toe-in if you ever need to ? The drag link bracket being welded to the tie-rod won't allow you to turn the center link.

Every Jeep I’ve owned as soon at the trac bar wears out (or breaks) this happens. Unfortunate you can never get used to it and it scares the Holy Spirit out of you every time 😂😂

That wobble could put in the ditch in a hurry. Good work getting rid of it!

My '75 C-20 just death wobbled on me today at between 35 and 40 mph. Seems the towing company that dragged her in for me this last time hooked up to my steering components and left her in park to load her,
    bent a tie rod.
I thought she was pulling to the right a little more than normal. Not happy. It's an easy fix, but it's that time of year where my driveway is 6 inches of mud, and I haven't got around to building the garage yet.
I'd be happy with a concrete pad.
It's a good thing I own that little Comanche pickup truck for a bit, the queen of the death wobble. And I knew what was happening. Elevated the pucker factor a little and spilled my coffee.

OMG you don't want to be in your jeep when it does that. We were on a dirt road at the trinity site when I first experienced that. It took my husband a fair bit to convince me to get back in the jeep lol.Took us forever to fix ours. Enjoy your work and believe you guys could fix anything.

I experienced this horrible problem in my 04 Dodge Ram Cummins. Had the ball joints replaced - problem solved
