I haven't made any money on Shutterstock yet.😔i already have 200 photos on shutterstock. can you help me?? My Portfolio www.shutterstock.com/g/Diannsaka?rid=269187984
Hey Nicole - great video! I just purchased a large number of photos on Shutterstock (including some of yours) so perhaps I can give the perspective of a buyer. You are right that some topics are way over saturated. There are tons of photos of the Capitol Building but I probably only need one or two. On the other hand, there are almost no photos of DC restaurants, which I needed and had to go out and get myself. Bad captions is also a big problem. It was extremely helpful when photographers dated their photos in the caption. There are a lot of photos that are old but it's unclear exactly how old. Similarly it's a big help to know exactly where a photo was taken, including city and state, since that's the way I searched for photos.
Hey Rob, thanks for your helpful insights, I have pinned your comment to the top! I think what you say is very much in line with what I have noticed on Shutterstock myself. I have photographed pretty much every store and restaurant in my own neighborhood, but there's so many more in the region that are still unphotographed. While many people upload their prettiest photos of flowers, dogs, cats and clouds, what buyers are looking for is usually something different. It's definitely great to hear that confirmation from a buyer :)
@@NicoleGlass Exactly! For example my new e-book I needed images to show readers what to expect, not necessarily the prettiest sunset images of landmarks. A few of your images made it into the book!
@@NicoleGlass What are the legal limitations of that? I thought it was technically illegal to take and sell photos of private property? I can't find a ton of concise information online about selling photos, just about taking them. Thanks!
which brings back to the most obvious point, upload what the clients Want and Need. I have pushed sliders way beyond my comfort zone, but this is what got uploaded. Interesting about dating the picture. Obviously it's done automatically on Editorial content, but i might have to look at some of my commercial where timeliness of capture might be important and add dates, or seasons...

I run a small design studio, and download hundreds of stock images for a variety of use. I took the time to review Nicole's portfolio on Shutterstock from the perspective of a buyer, and she is SPOT ON in her advice. Her portfolio is full of the sort of photos I have trouble finding when I need something specific. Examples of what I'm always looking for and coming up short are: 1. human subjects doing banking/finance in a way that looks natural and not posed, 2. human subjects seeking medical advice or assistance, 3. human subjects doing normal activities in a natural way. I just found your RUclips Channel (thanks RUclips recommended videos). This is great, I’ve been a part-time photographer for over 10 years and never thought about stock photography. Thinking about ways I can carve out an hour each day to try it out this year. Thanks for the inspiration!
Hey Michael! Awesome. If you've been shooting that long, you probably have hard drives full of images that you can just upload, rather than letting them collect dust :)
I was like how the heck does she keep her place that spotless.......Glad I watched to the end. I've been doing stock photography for almost 5 years, didn't start taking it serious until the last year and its paying off. But..one of my specialties is dogs and they sell well for me, now, if that was the only thing in my port....I'd be eating ramen noodles full time. Variety variety variety, but don't be afraid to have a specialty. You have to keep it fun, wildlife is my passion, it doesn't sell well on Shutterstock, but does well on some of the other agencies. Love your videos Nicole!
Thank you so much for the kind words! Photographing animals is so much fun... I love doing that as well (but it doesn't sell well). But the fact that you get to hang out with cute dogs is all that matters right? And about the apartment... I wish mine looked like that! I loved how it was decorated and was decided to make my video there instead of my own messy apartment. Haha. Anyway, thanks for stopping by - have a great day!
Hi Nicole, I started yesterday. Uploaded my first photo and got rejected! Came here saw your videos and then went back upload another photo and guess what?? It’s approved!! My 2nd picture got approved.. thanks 🙏🏻
Thanks Nicole. 2018--before June 2020 when Shutterstock did their "commissions restructuring"! Now in 2022 I only contribute video and am seeing much higher earnings than I ever did contributing photos.
Thanks for the great video, with great ideas, Nicole. Sometimes I just need a little good encouragement to keep the ball rolling. Now semi-retired, I'm shifting to stock for my 30 yrs of photos in my library, as well as current images. I just keep on shooting and downloading. I'm from the USA, but currently in the Philippines. Hoping to be back Stateside by Christmas, and shoot in Colorado and Texas in 2020. :)
Thanks for your videos and the inspiration! Just got my first 38 pics approved a week ago an already got a download!! Waiting for 100+ pics to get approved now :)
Hi Nicole. I love these videos about shutterstock. Im working on a portfolio, got around 300 photos, sold only 18, but I know by seeing videos like this one, that I have to increase the number of images to get there. Thank you for keep recording the videos. Best regards from Portugal.
Hi Mario, the fact that you sold 18 photos already is pretty good actually. Now imagine when your portfolio is 10 times that size. Take a look at the pinned comment on this video - a buyer left some awesome insights which I think is super helpful! Also, do you upload videos to Shutterstock? My video sales are a lot less frequent but when I do get one, I usually make a lot more.
Hi again, Nicole. Yes, I understand that if we choose our subjects wisely, we should get higher results sooner. But I believe that quantity is also important, so I'm trying to achieve something like a thousand, thousand and fifteen hundred and then start to be more objective in each photo. Am I making myself clear? And about the videos, I have not gotten there yet. My camera (Canon 6D MkI) makes Full HD movies, but I want to buy a 4K drone. First I need a 70-200 f2.8 and then the drone. One step at a time ... Thank you for your very helpful insights and sorry if I make any writing mistakes. I speak much better than I write.
Hi Mario. I started 5 months ago with shutterstock. I've 143 photos in my portfolio and I've got 35 sales so far. I noticed, that the very specialized photos in a certain field sell best. No competition there.
I like taking photos as my hobby and was interested in doing some stock photography as well to cover some cost for gears:). While watching videos about stock photography I discovered your channel and I really like your videos. Lots of helpful info and positivity. I feel that you will have a big successful as a RUclipsr! Keep up the good work!
Thanks so much for the kind words! In a way, RUclips feels a lot like stock photography. A lot of work in the beginning but hoping it will pay off down the road 😊
Yes exactly. I work for a company that has a few subscription plans to stock sites, and I know for a fact they're downloading some pretty random stuff.
I was amazed at the variety of different locations that you shot your video in this house, assuming it was yours, and also amazed at how clean and perfect everything was. You should have kept that a secret until the next video. I was jealous for a little bit...
Nicole, I love your videos. 3:40 The problem with shutterstock is that so many photos are rejected. The other day two of my photos were rejected because of file error. Then re-uploaded them, this time they said no " property release " . The same building ( it is an ancient church in public place in Cyprus ) is sold as commercial by other contributors. I would have uploaded it for the third time as editorial but it takes time to write all that captions and tags. I uploaded them on alamy instead and they were accepted. There are some inconsistencies when they decide to accept or reject a photo and it puts people off .
Thanks. Yeah, there are definitely some issues with Shutterstock these days. You might want to check out my video about their recent earnings change - it's a big one - ruclips.net/video/Qgbu4-Y6j-Q/видео.html
Hi Nicole i have few questions to ask from regards to shutterStock 1. If i use 2 models to my photos do i have to get model release from each of them. 2. If i photograph a private property or city buildings from far (miles away) still do i have get property release. 3. Is it possible upload my rejected photos under editorial 4. Where can i get model release document, if there is any link to download 5. Why photos get reject regards to reason "your subject not in focused" 6. In my country (Sri Lanka)PayPal is not support to received cash. are there any payment gateways to received cash such as "Skrill" / "NETELLER" 7. Is it possible to transfer the cash direct to bank account. 8. Have you using stock like Adobe, deposit photos and pond5 and whats your opinion regard using those sites. Appreciate your value support.
Hi Mohamed, I have made videos answering most of these questions already but for the ones I haven’t addressed yet, I’ll include them in my next Q&A video 😊
@@NicoleGlass hi nicole thank you for your respond i have watch most your most videos and regards to above questions that i ask which is not mention on your prevoius videos for couple of questions. Kindly if you can tag me a link is much appreciate.
I am just starting stock photography and all your videos have been helpful but this one is the best.. Thanks for the help and advice. Just subscribed and like.
Thanks for the great information. As a recently retired senior, I'm investigating ways to support my photography hobby. I'm glad you clarified your location, as I was wondering about the artwork on the walls... I was expecting to see your work, instead. ;-)
Haha, I actually don't have any of my own photos printed, but I probably should decorate with them:) I wish my apartment looked like that model unit! Need to clean up a bit ;)
Your video summarizes the begginer tips! Very good. I have a port of 700 photos and I don't sell a lot but this is a hobby for me. I have in mind your tips and maybe in the long run it's going to pay out more.
Nicole I hope you see my comment, there is a point i didn't understand, you said that it is not good to put multiple pics of the same model or subject, but i mean the buyer might want a slightly different angle or want to have several photos to choose from, and the photos are already edited, what am i loosing ? they are just extra, or is there anything I am missing ??
It’s not a bad thing. The point I was making is: some people say to me “I have 1,000 photos up and I’m not making sales.” Then I look at their portfolio and they have hundreds of photos of the same thing. So they don’t have 1,000 unique images, and it doesn’t surprise me that they haven’t made sales. Diversity is a good thing :)
@@NicoleGlass first of all, I am surprised that you answered, didnt expect that, second of all thank you I understood your point, and lastly, because of your videos today morning I made my very first sale on shutterstock and it felt amazing the fact that someone was willing to pay for a pic of mine, thank you so so much Nicole, keep it up 💕
Hi Nicole, interesting video. Agree with everything except the tip to keyword the maximum 50, which may lead to spamming...but you're right that they need to be correct, so all depends on the images. Nice helpful list and you're quite charming in front of the camera! Look forward to more videos! All the best - Alex, brutally honest guy
Hi Alex, that's definitely a good point - keywords should of course only be relevant to the image! Thank you for the compliment and thanks for watching! 😀
Got another questions girl, I intend to open an account at some point, do they have a charge to do this, membership fees o r something? I'm just getting a little excited about all this...
My main source for keywords is the Thesaurus for Graphic Materials, a free download from the Library of Congress. They have over 7000 terms and are open to suggestions. I hope stock photographers will contact the TGM editors and make a great list even greater. I keep my copy in a Microsoft Access database.
I been doing Photography on Flikr for 3 years now! I use a Nikon P600 and it takes some good pics but I usually do Nature Photography such as birds or landscapes of parks, some city street views etc. Yet when I recently discovered from another RUclips video about Shutter Stock! I uploaded my first 30 images and they were all rejected either because they were signed using my "Capture_This" or not big enough, or most had some sort of logo visible... this was very frustrating after having to re take a whole new photo portfolio just to use on their site!! what should I do, and is it worth it?
People say it sells more on Schutterstock, but POnd5 is less pedantic with photos and is artistically less stupid. I hope the sell for photos increases there. People say they are not good for photos, just music and video
Can you please do a video on the type of camera that would be good for beginner photographers in Shutterstock? What quality do the photos need to be? How many megapixels should they be? Can you go over the technical aspects? Can you please give us some ideas on equipment that would be helpful to get? If you make a video like this, please let us know of some budget options that work effectively because it's not realistic for most of us to spend a lot of money on equipment when we're just starting out. But at the same time, the equipment that we get has to be efficient enough to do the job, so that hopefully at some point we will start making money. After that, we can possibly invest in more expensive equipment.
I have made videos that answer every question you've asked here. Regarding cameras - here's my video on that: ruclips.net/video/whO8XRDUyfU/видео.html And here's my Shutterstock playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLwLa_WVqeLnaHDvr7DAc4nGHJ0DtSBJYy Hope that helps :)
Nicole, today I’m searching for a guide/instructions on applying for Shutterstock. I know, you’re saying that’s simple! Well, I’m going to try and then I have only few photos to upload......do I wait until I get more or does it matter?
Hi Nicole. Since you use shutterstock I know you would probably be able to answer my question....after I submitted photos and it has been approved...does it upload automatically onto shutterstock for customers to see or do I need to upload it manually after approval?
I've actually looked up other photos almost identical to mine on Shutterstock. I copied their keywords that described my photo(s), submitted my photo(s) and they got rejected because of SPAM. So I've learned that Shutterstock lets certain photographers SPAM and others, not so much. It's BS.
I think Shutterstock has become a little more picky in recent years. Which makes sense considering how many more people upload now. Sometimes I see photos that have been uploaded 5-10 years ago and their keywords are completely unrelated to the photo. If I were to use those keywords today, they would definitely get rejected.
How many megapixels should the camera that we use for Shutterstock be? What dimensions are acceptable for photos and what aren't? Also, how can we avoid our photos being rejected in Shutterstock?
Here you go: www.shutterstock.com/contributorsupport/articles/kbat02/000006575 :) Please keep in mind that these things are all available in your contributor panel. I don't work for Shutterstock... all I can do is share what they have already shared.
thank you so much for the Rich information, my question is : when you are taking photos in a street or in a public place, or in a general event, and people appear in your photos did Shutterstock will ask for a model reless?
Can anyone explain me? Do you pay monthly fee if your images were downloaded (purchased) or not download (not purchased)? .. or like this: if it downloaded (purchased) you pay, not download (not purchased) no any fee to pay?

Should i really need to focus on that area ?
my case is kind of strange, i mostly upload travel pictures from places like china where there aren't really a lot of pictures already on shutterstock. It seems i a stuck between 30 to 40 dollars per month. When i had 500 pictures, 30 dollars. Now that i have almost 1300, still 30 dollars. I m trying to cover as many countries and as many places as i can but still sales on a average never increase
Good info thanks... I just added my photos into sets. Can you do a video on the importance of "Sets". I can't seem to find anything related to that on RUclips.
I could have googled this but you really know your stuff and google would have shot me to you anyway, TAKE THAT MIDDLE MAN GOOGLE!!! oh, sorry, my question is how do you get around the property release form without making it an editorial? Thanks, great video also!!
Lol too funny. If something requires a property release form, you have to either submit a form or submit it as editorial. Those are your two options. I use the app "Easy Release" for all of my forms.
Nicole Glass very cool, I will look in to that app, I apologize for asking as I binge watched your videos and came across the one where you explained it all. Thank you so much for that. 1) do you have a LOT of photos? (Hundreds at least) 2) are your photos unique and in unsaturated topics? 3) are you using all 50 keywords? 4) are your captions long and descriptive? 5) do you have patience? If any of your answers are "no", then that might be the problem
I just made a account a week ago but my acc went into 90 day delay and I won’t be able to get any payments, will they let me know the downloads during this period or after 90 days? Also should i keep uploading in this peroid or after 90 days?
Hi Nicole, if say we do cover a demonstration event as you point out what kind of releases if any do we need to get signed? Can they be uploaded for Editorial only or as Commercial?
If i am uploading a aerial view of mountains and ocean or of a texture which don’t have any people in them, then should I upload in commercial or editorial? Please reply to me i am new on acc, i am in doubt like whether am i uploading in a wrong category!
I'm sorry for out of topics, Is this applies to vector design anyway? I have thousand and five hundred vectors but not selling well for about half years. What do you suggest? By the way, great video
Thanks! I don't do designs so this is out of my field, but I would guess that you would still need to apply the basic techniques I talk about in this video. Have a large quantity uploaded, use all 50 keywords, have good descriptions, find topics in unsaturated niches, etc. Seems like you definitely have the quantity so that's not the issue.
Thanks for u'r reply Nicole, from u'r advice just realised that i'm careless to consider a specifik niche, mybe thats one cause me get not selling well besides strugling in english caption since it's not my language 😅, again, thanks Nicole !

I really like your content. Its very informative and helpful. I have a question: if I upload an image on shuttrrstock with editorial permission and someone uses it in a monetised youtube video or a video that includes paid promotion on youtube- will it be considered as commercial use?
Good question. I believe that's ok for the clients to do. A few of my photos have ended up in a RUclipsr's videos. But think about it: when a news website or a blog uses your photo, that's ok right? But those news sites probably have advertising banners on the page well. So it's not all that different from a monetized RUclips video. Everything on the Internet seems to be monetized these days.
@@NicoleGlass yes , i know...but my Question is why some Very bad Quality image are approved...on shutterstock...???? Comparing them my pictures are far better but they not approve my some pictures.
Hi Nicole, i uploaded photos on shutterstock but for a reason i don't understand all my download are from 1 photo. And i don't understand because is not my best,. Is it strange ?
Hi Sylver, it is not always your best photos that sell. Sometimes the weirdest, most random images end up being your top sellers! One of my top selling images is a photo of a trash can! Funny, right?
I am a freelance designer and sometimes use stock photography. I do not know what kind of photo you are talking about but to give you an idea on why you think your best photo did not sell instead of your other one is because... as a designer, I am looking for something to help compliment a design. Yes some people use stock images by itself for articles and such but a lot also use it as part of a design.. whether its for some marketing material or whatever. If a client wants a poster made for some festival in Orlando, I will look for a photo of they city or part of it that will do good as a background to help bring the main design to life. I am not looking for a masterpiece to hang up on my wall. On another video by Nicole, she shows a picture of fabric softener sheets on top of a washing/drying machine. That is the type of picture I would look for when making a design for advertising/marketing. There is a perfect spot for text/design to the right of her photo and the background disappears into a nice blurry background which will help highlight the message in the final design. Most photos being searched on stock sites are to help compliment something, not be showcased in a art gallery by itself. Hope this helps.

Awesome!! :) Hope you make some sales!
Most uploaders don't have any idea what the designers need. They upload pretty landscapes while the designers are looking for lifestyle photos.
Haha, I should have pretended it was mine. I wish! I tend to have clean corners for filming purposes but not every section is clean... 😅
@@NicoleGlass Oh, will do that Nicole. Thank you.
Thank you so much. Well explained. I also started uploading photos last week. Already got $0.25 and so happy :)
Nice work!
Hi Nicole i have few questions to ask from regards to shutterStock
1. If i use 2 models to my photos do i have to get model release from each of them.
2. If i photograph a private property or city buildings from far (miles away) still do i have get property release.
3. Is it possible upload my rejected photos under editorial
4. Where can i get model release document, if there is any link to download
5. Why photos get reject regards to reason "your subject not in focused"
6. In my country (Sri Lanka)PayPal is not support to received cash. are there any payment gateways to received cash such as "Skrill" / "NETELLER"
@@NicoleGlass Hi Nicole one question if i take a shot part of a body do i still have to get a model release from that person.
Great vid👍 Only got 209 photos up so far, but had 31 bought so far 😀 keep plugging away and never give up
That's quite amazing actually! You're doing better than most people then :)
What about digital art concept or illustration are they worth it?
I don’t make vectors so I don’t know how they do
Thank you so much for your tips. I just uploaded my first 100+ photos and it’s still in review🤓. Please know many people appreciate what you do.
Thank you Nicole.
I sold 1 pic this month. Just I tried to know how the shutterstock works.
Keep do more 😍😍👌
The first download is always the most exciting :) Hope you get thousands more
@@NicoleGlass tq👍
Hey Varma, do you decide what to charge or does shutterstock?
@@davidc5885 i didn't decide , that all shutterstock will do it automatically.
@@NicoleGlass first of all, I am surprised that you answered, didnt expect that, second of all thank you I understood your point, and lastly, because of your videos today morning I made my very first sale on shutterstock and it felt amazing the fact that someone was willing to pay for a pic of mine, thank you so so much Nicole, keep it up 💕
I'm happy to hear that! Congratulations :)
can i upload my matte painting design, photobase design in shutterstock
@@jamessharp1321 No. The fees are only for buyers. All the information is on the site. Look for "Contributor" information
.
Scene 4 que sympathetic facial expression: imply genuine empathy and emotional support:
Que dialog: “Maybe your photos really aren’t the that good”
My main source for keywords is the Thesaurus for Graphic Materials, a free download from the Library of Congress.
People say they are not good for photos, just music and video
how to deal with release, if you take images in street, protest etc
Wonderful video. So happy to have discovered you, you actually flesh out the detail clearly and concisely. Learning a lot already! Thank you!
Thanks Ann, I'm glad you find these videos helpful :)
Regarding cameras - here's my video on that: ruclips.net/video/whO8XRDUyfU/видео.html
And here's my Shutterstock playlist: ruclips.net/p/PLwLa_WVqeLnaHDvr7DAc4nGHJ0DtSBJYy

Hi Nicole! First time trying Shutterstock. Great video for beginners, I like to start with the negative and get that out of the way.
Hi Angelica! Awesome, I hope you find success with Shutterstock. Also keep video footage in mind, not just photos :)
I just saw your video on the new payment levels on shutterstock. So timely
Nicole, today I’m searching for a guide/instructions on applying for Shutterstock. I know, you’re saying that’s simple! Well, I’m going to try and then I have only few photos to upload......do I wait until I get more or does it matter?
Here's all the info :) www.shutterstock.com/contributorsupport/articles/kbat02/000006608?l=en_US&fs=RelatedArticle
I have over 25,000+ downloads - pretty damn happy i started
Hi Nicole. Since you use shutterstock I know you would probably be able to answer my question....after I submitted photos and it has been approved...does it upload automatically onto shutterstock for customers to see or do I need to upload it manually after approval?
After you upload it you will have to go in there and add all the information (keywords, captions, etc.) before you actually submit it for review.
These videos are so instructive. Always short enough to watch in a few mins and full of great practical tips.
Glad you enjoy them :)
I have 59 up now on SS lol and sold 2 but at that terrible 25c rate😢 both was editorial 😒
trima kasih banget sis atas sarannya...
thank you so much for the Rich information, my question is : when you are taking photos in a street or in a public place, or in a general event, and people appear in your photos did Shutterstock will ask for a model reless?
Not for editorial photos:)

Do you pay monthly fee if your images were downloaded (purchased) or not download (not purchased)? .. or like this: if it downloaded (purchased) you pay, not download (not purchased) no any fee to pay?

I don't know too much about laptops. I'd recommend Sara Dietschy's channel for good laptop reviews
Thanks for this! I enjoy photography and editing. I am guilty of submitting pictures I have taken and edited to community companies and schools for free just because I enjoyed taking the pictures. Should i really need to focus on that area ?
Yes definitely. If you don't have good captions and descriptions, then no one will ever be able to find your photos!

Hi Marjorie, I use Adobe Premiere Pro. Hope that helps :)
my case is kind of strange, i mostly upload travel pictures from places like china where there aren't really a lot of pictures already on shutterstock.
3) are you using all 50 keywords?
4) are your captions long and descriptive?
5) do you have patience?

Dear Nicole, I was wondering it is possible or legal to upload the same image to both Shutterstock and Adobe Stock?
Yes it is:)
Can i upload photo of individuals? But i don't have any written permission from them. So in which category i should upload these pics?
If i am uploading a aerial view of mountains and ocean or of a texture which don’t have any people in them, then should I upload in commercial or editorial? Please reply to me i am new on acc, i am in doubt like whether am i uploading in a wrong category!
Commercial! :)

@@NicoleGlass hmm that's true.
So it is restricted to be used solely for commercial purpose.

Shutterstock always gives you a reason for the rejection
