When i view the relationship between the wing length and tail length, i would say that both these birds are either long in body, have a wing correction or both ! What would you think about this ? Good luck with them.

@@RFRP I'm a care taker of the pigeons from a businessman and i live in Belgium,more specific in West-Flanders.So aswell on provincial and national races he was the man to beat.We bought pigeons from the dutchmen Koen Minderhoud who raced with exclusive Vandenabeele pigeons .Our results went up sky high.The pigeon racers here in Belgium and Holland who succeeded with his pigeons are countless.

The most important thing to read up on is pigeon health. I would just continue following other fanciers online and learning from them. There’s plenty of good info online on pigeon health. Foy’s Pet Supplies does a biweekly video where they discuss specific topics on pigeon health, breeding, supplies, medications etc. Follow them on Facebook and watch all the archived vids.
Where are you located? I would also try to find someone nearby that can show you some of the basics if needed. Sometimes it’s nice to be able to talk with someone directly with more experience. Best wishes and keep in touch!!

Glad to hear you are working towards getting set up with racing pigeons! It’s a fantastic hobby. Where are you located? You can usually find other local fanciers that you could buy some birds from. If you are in the US I may be able to offer some suggestions.

Sounds like you’re not too far from me then! Looking online is a good idea as well. Www.new ipigeon.com or idreampigeons.com usually have proven bloodlines and the birds are typically in the US so shipping is reasonable. I periodically have birds for sale too. Good luck!

i bought a racing pigeon that has been raced and i wanted to know if i let that pigeon out after 2 months.. will it come back to my loft or will it just fly all over the world and not come back?
Great question! It will most likely try to make its way back to its previous loft. Sometimes you get lucky and they figure out that it’s too far of a journey and after a day or two find their way back to your (their new) loft, but that is usually the exception. Not worth letting it out unless you are willing to accept the high risk of losing it. If you breed out of it, you can try to let it out when it has young and it will be more inclined to stick around; the risk is lower but still there. Good luck and keep us posted!

Vandenabeele bloodlines are actually pretty common in Europe and the US, so there’s a chance you could pick some up from local fanciers. You could also monitor newipigeon.com or idreampigeons for Gaby-based birds. I purchased the two in this video from Jones Family Loft. Good luck!

It is always exciting to get new birds and your new birds are beautiful but I do have a concern and I hope you don't mind me saying this, I am a strong believer in keeping new birds in quarantine for 3 weeks and just in case any nasties they may have. Yes, the birds may have come from a reputable breeder who looks after his birds but pmv is a big problem and I can't help thinking of those birds in transit and being close to other pigeons and here I speak from experience and currently I have seven mature birds and two babies who are down with pmv so please be extra careful with new birds!

Yep! I always quarantine new birds. These look great and their droppings are good too so the quarantine period won’t be as long as I’ve done with some. I am about to vaccinate all my birds prior to breeding season and these will get it too.

You just got the bird. Your counting your chickens before they hatch. A foundation bird is a bird that is a successful breeder of winners and you build your loft around that bird. You don't know if that bird can breed a bird that can fly around the block !

Eat the eggs. That's what I do when hens lay eggs without being bred.
I thought about it, but they have been sitting for a week and a half. Are the eggs still good??
@@RFRP I wouldn't try it. I usually eat the eggs the day they come out.
I haven't done any research but I know that you can tell how fresh a chicken egg is by floating it in the water. If it is fresh, it sinks to the bottom, if it is rotten, it floats.
I don't know if pigeon eggs are the same way. But that could be a good experiment for you to try.
By the way, I usually keep a pair of inferior racing homer hens to produce eggs for me to eat. Obviously, you don't want to eat the fertile eggs of your prize homers. I eat the eggs from the hens that are not being bred.

I have no background with pigeons but it sounds like pairs mate for life. What if you want to mate a cock and hen that are not a pair. Is that possible?
They will mate for life if you let them alone. However, their drive to reproduce makes it pretty easy to pair them with a different mate each year, especially if you separate the cocks from the hens for a few months to recoup after the breeding season. By the time the next season comes around they will happily pair up with a new mate.
